Ed Heaton Returns This Fall For Two Events
We're happy to announce that professional photographer and instructor, Ed Heaton, will be joining us again on October 2nd and 3rd to teach a seminar and workshop. Ed did a great job putting on a 3-hour Tamron sponsored seminar for us last October and we're really looking forward to having him back. Ed is an excellent and entertaining instructor and we guarantee you'll leave with much great new information and ideas to help improve your photography. The seminar on Saturday and the Workshop on Sunday are two seperate events ... check out the details below.
"Light and Composition"
Learning to capture light and composition will make extraordinary images from ordinary subjects! Spend the evening with Ed as he talks about balancing both light and composition to make your images exceptional. Ed will discuss timing (being in the right place at the right time) along with visual design (why and how subjects and color support and balance each other). He'll also
talk about filters and their usefulness in today's world.
Date: Saturday - October 2, 2010
Time: 6:00-9:00pm (Doors open at 5:00)
Seminar Fee: $39.00 (Limit 50 people)
Location: Photo Connection of Colchester
Directions: (Click Here)
"Along the Air Line Trail"
The day begins bright and early at the Raymond Brook Marsh Wildlife Preserve section of the Air Line Rail Trail in Amston, CT. Join us as we put Ed's key points from his lecture into practice with a hands-on field session. With a variety of subject to focus on we will spend the morning working together making images as we stroll along the trail. Ed will provide group instruction on nature and landscape photography, along with limited individual teaching.
Date: Sunday - October 3, 2010
Time: 6:45am - 3:00pm (approx.)
Workshop Fee: $49.00 (Limit 25 people)
Location: Air Line Trail and Photo Connection of Colchester
Directions to the Trail: (Click Here)
This is a Rain-or-Shine Event, however, there is a back-up plan if heavy rain or other extreme weather conditions are forecasted for Sunday morning. Ed will teach a seminar on "Image Enhancements". Each person will bring several images and Ed will demonstrate and teach image enhancements using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. This seminar would be from 9:30-3:00 (approx.) Please understand that this is the back-up plan and there will be no refunds due to bad weather conditions.
Note: Thanks to our friend, Stan Malcolm, for letting us "borrow" the title of this workshop from his website. Stan has taken thousands of pictures "Along the Air Line Trail" and you can see many of them at www.performance-vision.com/airline.

Les Campbell's 85th birthday
To all who went to Sky Meadow this year, and to all those who have gone there over years, I thought I would let you all know that Les Campbell will be celebrating his 85th birthday this coming Saturday, August 14. Quite a milestone, don't you think? At his age, however, many of his childhood friends have passed away, and his children and their children have settled in many different locations, although the family will be having their annual reunion at Sky Meadow that weekend too. I thought it would really be a wonderful tribute to Les if many of you could find the time to get Les a birthday card and send it off to him - let him know that he has many friends in this part of the country. Les has been a very good friend to the many pghotographers (especially the New Haven Camera Club) for many years now and I think this is a great way to say "thank you" to him. If you are interested in sending Les a birthday card, here is his address:

Ask Tim Grey - Content Aware Options
I was discussing this topic with Tom yesterday, Tim must be claivoyant LOL. CS5's content aware is pretty good, although it sometimes requires a little cloning to tweak it after you are done.

Today's Question:
After reading your August 6 eNewsletter, I went back and re-read your eNewsletter of June 24 [both of which related to the Content Aware technology in Photoshop CS5]. When I started using Content Aware I forgot the part about using the Spot Healing Brush. Instead, after making a selection around the offending objects (or the blank areas), I click on Edit > Fill and use the Content Aware option. Is there an advantage of one method over the other?
Tim's Answer:
There are indeed advantages (or perhaps more accurately, simply differences) for each of these methods, which is why I'm so grateful that Adobe included both options for Content Aware in Photoshop CS5. The differences are actually quite similar to the use of painting on a layer mask versus using a selection as the basis of a layer mask. Mostly it comes down to a choice between convenience and the need for precision.
In general, using the Spot Healing Brush is more convenient because you simply select the tool (and related options) and then paint on the image where you want to apply a correction. This is about as simple as it gets. Of course, it also lacks a certain amount of precision. In many situations you don't need a high degree of precision, and in essence my feeling is that if you can get away with the easy approach without introducing any compromises, then you should probably take that approach. For example, if you're simply cleaning up some dust spots in the sky, chances are the Spot Healing Brush will produce excellent results. Therefore, in such a situation I would not invest the time and effort required to create a selection of the areas I need to clean up.
In situations that require a bit more precision, the Spot Healing Brush isn't necessarily the best approach. For example, if the area you're trying to clean up is close to other lines within the image, a selection allows you to focus the cleanup only in the areas you actually need them. Let's assume you're trying to remove blemishes on a tile floor in an interior architectural photograph. If the blemishes are very small, you could use the Spot Healing Brush with the brush size set very small. However, even then you might end up with bleeding into surrounding areas, which could harm the lines bounding each of the tiles. With a selection you can constrain the selection to only the areas you need.
So, in short, use the Spot Healing Brush for quick corrections where there isn't a high risk of blending the corrections into areas you don't want to change. When you need more precision than the Spot Healing Brush provides (or when achieving that precision will consume significant time) you should create a selection and use the Fill command. But I wouldn't create a selection unless you really need to.

World Photography Day August 19

World Photography Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Louis Daguerre. On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype process. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift “Free to the World.”
Another photographic processes, the Calotype, was also invented in 1839 by William Fox Talbot (it was announced in 1841). Together, the invention of both the Daguerreotype and Calotype mark 1839 as the year that photography was invented.

When Will We Finally Get Frames and Mats For Digital Camera Images?
I have been saying this for years and it is part of most of my digital programs as well. It is also the most common question we get from our clients, we cannot print them a full frame 8x10 from some of their images.

The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park was once again pleased to host its 17th Annual Photo Contest. This year's winning photos will be made into a postcard packet showcasing animals from throughout the zoo. One of the goals of this project is to educate and bring awareness to the Roseate Spoonbill Banding Project. Therefore, a portion of the proceeds of each postcard packet will go to this Audubon of Florida field research project.
Entries were received from all over the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. This year's judge was Olis Garber, a professional photographer in Jacksonville FL. Olis is an experienced St. Augustine Alligator Farm photo contestant with six winning photos—including one BEST IN SHOW—during the last four years. You can find his bio on our website: www.alligatorfarm.com.
With nearly 500 photos submitted, Olis faced quite a challenge during the selection process. This year's winning photographs are better than ever and will be on display at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm as well as on our website.

Nine additional photos will also be displayed in the postcard booklet,

Rick Sammon Amsterdam Tulips, HDR, etc.
One of the best times to visit Amsterdam is in spring, during the height of the tulip blooming season. Photographers travel there from around the world to focus their cameras on the dramatic colors and forms presented by Holland’s star flower – the tulip.
Based in Amsterdam, this workshop will take participants to ideal locations to photograph flowers, gardens, and tulip growing fields. We'll also photograph windmills, canals and castles. How cool is that!
During this 4 day/5-night, workshop, photographers will have an opportunity to work side by side with me as I illustrate how to capture the beauty of flowers, as well as country landscapes and charming villages.
In addition, I plan to use the local architectural features to teach you the finer points of HDR photography.
As former workshop participants know, I will offer lots of practical tips, techniques and advice in an entertaining and fun atmosphere. Yes! We will process our images in the digital darkroom. I'll be there to help.
What’s included: 5 nights hotel, 4 days touring by private motor coach, local guide, most meals and entrance fees.
What’s not included: air transportation, airport transfers, some meals, tips, and personal expenses.
Limited to 12 participants.
Dates: April 18 - 22, 2011.
Costs:
$1,995.00 per person for double occupancy
$2,345,00 per person for single occupancy
(One of the best-priced workshops to this area on the web! Compare.)
Shoot me an email if you are interested in joining the photo fun. Send to: ricksammon@mac.com

Rick Sammon’s 24/7 Photo Buffet
Rick Sammon’s 24/7 Photo Buffet application, co-developed with Dr. Dave Wilson, offers photographic advice, tips and techniques collected during his 30+ years of professional experience. The app is packed with how-to information (text, stills, movies and screen grabs) and is super easy-to-navigate.
This content-heavy app can be used as a reference to learn basic and advanced techniques, or as a searchable guide to find (how cool is that?) to find a quick fix for a tricky photographic situation. In essence, the app is like having Rick – one of today’s top professional photographers and authors – in your hip pocket to help you become a better photographer – 24/7.
Unlike many photo apps available today, Rick’s 24/7 Photo Buffet offers a comprehensive guide, and is not limited to any one effect, style or technique.
PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTENT
Just like any good buffet, Rick’s 24/7 Photo Buffet offers variety and choice … and you can go back again and again for additional helpings. This comprehensive app guides users with a combination of text, about 250 example photos, and video tutorials. Content is divided into four major sections, each with a scrollable collection of topics, including:
Seeing – Learn how to see a picture in your mind’s eye, before you snap the shot. Subjects covered include composition, framing, and lighting.
Making – Discover how to make a great picture rather than simply take a picture, applying your knowledge of exposure, flash, filters, and taking pictures with the iPhone itself.
Editing – Find out how to enhance your pictures in the digital darkroom by tweaking the white balance, levels, saturation and contrast, and selectively controlling sharpening.
Tips – Search Rick’s A-Z photo tips for advice on everything from aerial shooting and underwater photography to sunsets and panoramas.
In addition to the large helping of content, there is also a Help button that allows you to make comments and post suggestions for future apps.
Sprinkled throughout the app is a smorgasbord of photography topics.
Use this app to take better pictures of kids, nighttime subjects, sunrises and sunsets, fireworks, animals, people, scenery, waterfalls, rainy day subjects and wildlife.
Use this app to increase your knowledge of panoramas, lenses, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, fill flash, filters, lighting, ISO, photo editing software.
HDR INFO, Too!
HDR (High Dynamic Range) must-know info, Notes Feature and Expanded content.

THE LIME ROCK PARK MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Thanks Rich for passing this along!
THE LIME ROCK PARK MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Labor Day Weekend, September 2010
Lime Rock Park, Conn.
Capturing the speed and beauty of auto racing is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of sports photography. The Lime Rock Park Motorsports Photography Workshop offers you the opportunity to learn and improve your skills – taught by the top motorsports photographers working today – at the most scenic race track in North America.
Lime Rock is offering both one-‐day and two-‐day workshops during Historic Festival 28, September 3-‐6.
Composition, choosing locations, camera angles, techniques, equipment selection and understanding light are among the topics discussed briefly in the classroom and practiced extensively track-‐side during the one-‐day workshop. Students will work with each instructor and learn their individual approach to photographing motorsports.
The two-‐day workshop adds flash photography, learning to interact with drivers and crew, discussions on car-‐to-‐car photography, rigging and shooting on-‐car cameras, and photographing a race “on assignment.” Each day will end with a review and critique of each student’s best images. The workshop is designed for intermediate to experienced photographers. Each student must own a digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses and possess a basic understanding of how a camera functions. Further requirements needed at the workshop include: two digital media (compact flash card, SD card, etc.), rain gear, long pants, and closed toed shoes.
Nikon Professional Services will offer on-site support and a wide variety of cameras and lenses for photographers to test throughout the day. (Owning a Nikon camera is not a requirement to attend the workshop.) The Nikon gear is not meant to replace your personal equipment, but simply be an added benefit to workshop participants.
Instructors include Rick Dole, George Tiedemann and Robert Laberge.
o George Tiedemann has 30 + years covering motorsports as a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine. He has covered more than 25 Daytona 500s, 20 Indy 500s, 4 Olympic Games, and numerous Super Bowls and World Series. He is a contributing photographer to Corbis Photo Agency.
o Rick Dole has 25 years of racing experience. He has covered the Le Mans 24 Hours 14 times, 12 Indy 500s, both the French-‐ and U.S. Open tennis championships, the Beijing Summer Olympics, and is a contributing photography to Getty Images.
o Robert Laberge photographs have been published in Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, ESPN the Magazine, the New York and Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Racer, Autosport, Speedway Magazine and many others. Through the years Robert has covered events such as the Indianapolis 500 for the last decade, The Daytona 500, the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Playoffs, PGA and LPGA events, NFL games, the Rose Bowl, The Tour de France, the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, the 2004 Athens Olympic Summer Games, and the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games.
The One-‐Day Workshop will be offered on Friday, September 3 and Monday, September 6. The second day of the Two-‐
Day Workshop is Saturday, September 4. And a One-‐Day Digital Workshop will be available as a supplemental option to the overall experience on Sunday, September 5.

The Making of a Canon 500mm f/4L Lens
The Making of a Canon 500mm f/4L Lens
by Michael Zhang on Apr 19, 2010
Here’s an interesting three-part series that shows the creation of a Canon 500mm f/4.0L IS lens. It’s a neat look at the guts of glass, and an opportunity to see how exactly the various components of a lens are created and put together.
You get to see the entire process, starting with raw materials and ending with the finished, $6,000 lens.
Seeing how fine-tuned many of the steps in the process have to be, it’s no wonder these lenses can end up costing as much as a car.

Bald Eagles + Wood Ducks, May 18-22, 2011
Ken Archer and I will be leading a workshop to some of our favorite local areas in Western Washington. In the mornings we will be photographing the Bald Eagles at Hood Canal and in the afternoons we will be shooting Wood Ducks and other species in Lakewood. Every spring the low tides at Hood Canal attract large numbers (up to 200) Bald Eagles which come to feed on spawning sculpin. It's a great place to get close up flight shots of these birds. The first night we will give a 2-3 hour presentation on photographing birds in the wild with question and answer period.
The cost of the workshop is $1,595 and includes all lodging, transportation, guiding, instruction and property use fees.

Lens Mug !!
A Lens Mug!!!

Just a week ago, we walked into our local cafe, and our barista handed us our latte in a mug that looked just like a lens! She even topped it off with camera-shaped latte art and creamer in a film canister!
We just about died, but then we woke up instead.
Desperate for our dream to come true, we wished on shooting stars, wishbones, found pennies, fallen eyelashes…and sure enough, it worked!
Behold, the Camera Lens Mug, a mug that looks JUST LIKE a Canon 24-105mm lens!
It's equipped with a lens-cap lid (omg), rubber-grip focus and zoom rings (o…m…g), and an auto-focus switch that actually switches (OMG)! It's so realistic, you might have to use post-its just to remind yourself which is your mug and which is your lens!
Picture yourself sipping on a sweet tea vodka while basking in the sun or having the coolest desk in the office with your lenticular jelly-bean holder or scooping a delicious ice-cream fudge sundae out of your amazingly versatile lens mug. You can even turn it into a nifty flower-pot!
Consider yourself set for all future fellow photo friends' birthdays/graduations/weddings/long-lost-sibling-reunions! It's the best gift they'll get!
Hear, hear! You are hereby proclaimed King/Queen of camera-geek-dom, and the Camera Lens Mug is your chalice!

The Photogenic Natural Beauty of Acadia National Park
Maine: The Photogenic Natural Beauty of Acadia National Park
When: October 15-17, 2010
Where: Departs from the North River Wildlife Sanctuary, Marshfield, MA
Leaders: Greg Lessard, Professional Photographer/Educator and John Galluzzo, Naturalist, Mass Audubon
Cost: $375; $325 discount for Mass Audubon or Plymouth Photography Meet-up Group. Full fee covers all transportation, lodging and park entry fees.
The place names are as familiar to New Englanders as the names of beloved family members: Otter Cliff, Cadillac Mountain, Boulder Beach. They stand for Maine, for rugged coastlines and the ancient pine forests that crawl right to their edges. And they make Acadia National Park one of the most beautiful places on earth. Join Mass Audubon’s John Galluzzo and photographer Greg Lessard on a photographer’s journey through the sunrises and sunsets of Acadia, along the Tarn Trail, to Jordan Pond, up the Shore Path and to Bass Harbor Lighthouse and Eagle Lake. We’ll focus on the natural beauty and the manmade additions to the landscape, catching them in just the right light throughout the weekend. While Greg will share his photographic knowledge, John will share insights about the natural world that we will be observing.
This trip is a fantastic opportunity to photograph some of the nation's most beautiful scenery. Acadia is a mystical land where mountains run into the sea. A long time playground for the nation's elite, Acadia has become one of our country's most treasured National Parks.
We will visit some of the park's most celebrated views and some lesser known secrets. The trip will include views from Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond and Ocean Drive. We will also explore Bass Harbor, a quaint Downeast fishing village.
A $75 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit is required at the time of registration. No cancellation refunds will be issued 6 weeks prior to the program unless we can fill your space. Single supplement $90. Full fee covers all transportation, lodging and park entry fees. Payment in full is required by September 15, 2010. Contact John Galluzzo at jgalluzzo@massaudubon.org or 781-837-9400 for an itinerary.

Last Kodachrome roll processed in Parsons
Last Kodachrome roll processed in Parsons
http://www.kansas.com/2010/07/14/1403115/last-kodachrome-roll-processed.html
"Kodak announced last year that it would retire Kodachrome, a brand name of color reversal film it had manufactured since 1935. McCurry, well-known for his 1984 photograph of Sharbat Gula, or the "Afghan Girl," published on the cover of National Geographic magazine, requested from Kodak to shoot the last roll of 36 frames it manufactured.
National Geographic has closely documented the journey of the final roll of Kodachrome manufactured, down to its being processed. Dwayne's is only photo lab left in the world to handle Kodachrome processing, so National Geographic Television producer Yvonne Russo and National Geographic magazine senior video producer Hans Weise found themselves in Parsons Monday, along with McCurry, with the final roll of the iconic film of the 20th century"
Russo said the National Geographic special covering the last roll of Kodachrome manufactured will likely air sometime in spring 2011.

Free Photo Walk at Bronz Zoo with Rick Sammon!
I am doing a photo walk/shoot at the Bronx Zoo on September 7th – the day before my first Croton Workshop. The plan is to meet at the Jungle World exhibit (inside the entrance) at 1 PM. We'll shoot there and then move onto a few of the other exhibits. I'll be happy to offer photo advice and share some of my favorite shooting spots.
We'll wrap up around 4 PM – but you can hang out as long as you like.
Bring your telephoto and wide-angle lenses – and your flash. You'll want to tell the whole story, which you can do by shooting with different lenses.
Simply show up! But if you want to shoot me an email – ricksammon@mac.com – in case plans change, that's cool.
Hope to see you there.
Explore the light,
Rick

Sicilian wedding photographer accidentally shot, killed by couple after he had them pose with guns

Maybe he should have just told the happy couple to say, "Cheese?"
A wedding photographer in Sicily was accidentally killed when he asked the prospective bride and groom to pose for a picture using hunting rifles as props - and one of them went off.
The blast hit 45-year-old Calogero Scimea in the head, and he died while the wedding party looked on in horror.
High school sweethearts Valentina Anitra, 22, and Ignazio Licodia, 25, immediately put their wedding on hold while police investigated.
In another sad twist, Scimea was filling in for another wedding photographer.
"He was only there as a favor for the wedding photographer who had originally been booked but had to pull out as he was ill," Col. Teo Luzi, a spokesman for the Palermo Police, said in published reports Tuesday.
Rifles are legal on the scenic Italian island that's known for - among other things - spawning the Mafia. It's also a tradition for guns to be fired off at family events and not unheard of for partygoers to get hurt.
But investigators are having a hard time getting the whole story out of Licodia's parents. They face possible criminal charges because the shooting happened at their house in Altofonte, just before the kids were to set off for a local church.
"What we are trying to establish is if the gun went off as it was being handled by the photographer, or if it went off as it was handed to him," said Luzi. "But no one is being very talkative."

Pepsico update
Thanks for the update Pat!
Hi Lisa. Thought you might want to let your readers know that the water lily pond at Pepsico is a real disappointment this year. All the flowers have some kind of mold or spots on them and, with the exception of the yellow ones, the plants are small and are not producing many flowers. Definitely not worth the trip.
Thanks.

RPG Keys -- got workflow? then you NEED these!
OK, I have been using RPG keys for about two weeks now. If you process a lot of images then you NEED these! They are amazing!!!
I am just beginning to learn how to best use them and they have sped up my workflow already -- I would say in ~10% of the time I processed a shoot! 10% of the time it would normally take me! We love to shoot, we love our images processed, but the time spent processing them -- well we would be out shooting more, more people, more flowers, more sunsets, whatever....
And the best part is that one of the creators, Tim, is awesome with his customer support. Skypes you, calls you at home, etc. A great product with great customer support -- what a combination!
They are on sale right now -- they can be used in Lightroom, Photoshop, ACR, Kubota Dashboard 3, etc.
RPG Keys is a workflow plug-in (keys and software) for Photographers.
The photo editing process for photographers takes far too long and it takes the fun our of what we love to do!

The RPG KEY company was founded by two brothers from Maine who figured out that they made a living while working with their clients and not at a computer editing photographs. The simple concept of spending more time doing what they loved (photographing) and less time at a computer has driven their studio business through the roof.
Every product offered by RPG is designed to help photographers finish their editing faster so they can spend more time with a camera and a client. Originally designed just for Adobe's Lightroom program, RPG is now offering key based solutions for most of the photo industry tools.

How to Prevent & Edit out Reflections on Glasses
How to Prevent & Edit out Reflections on Glasses
by Elizabeth Halford
Read here: http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-prevent-edit-out-reflections-on-glasses#ixzz0uQbnoJnh
"Subjects who wear eye glasses can offer a unique difficulty for photographers. First, there’s the dilemma of whether they should wear them or not (will they not feel & look like themselves without them? Are they hiding fabulous eyes behind those glasses?) And then there’s the problem of glare and reflection. An attentive photographer will pay attention to this factor, but it does cause issues and where a photo might be perfectly composed and lit, but a little glare in the glasses can throw the whole thing off."
This article offers real time and post processing suggestions.
Another suggestion I have seen is to take two photos, one with and one without their glasses (you or an assistant removes their glasses in between shots) and then just take their eyes from one image and put them back into the image with the glare/glasses. Lisa

Exposure 3
This is directly from Alien Skin...
Exposure 3 is ready. Here are a few highlights, but the juicy stuff is on our Web site. There you’ll find entertaining videos, gorgeous images, and you can try Exposure yourself. For a detailed list of what’s new, checkout the features page.
Speed!
You'll immediately notice that Exposure 3 feels much more responsive because of the completely rewritten preview system. Exposure 3 in 64-bit CS5 is over twice as fast as Exposure 2 in CS4 on the Mac and about 30% faster on Windows.
Lightroom and Photoshop CS5 64-bit
Exposure 3 works great with 64-bit Photoshop CS5 on both platforms. CS5 gives Exposure access to more memory and a big speed boost. Tight Lightroom integration supports batch processing and does not require Photoshop.
Over 500 Hand Crafted Presets
There are many new carefully researched presets, including early Kodachrome, Technicolor, Autochrome, bleach bypass, Panatomic-X, Tech Pan, and Lo-Fi toy cameras. New effects like vignette, dust, and scratches help the retro presets look more realistic.
If you purchased Exposure 2 in April 2010 or later then you will receive a free upgrade soon through e-mail.

Finally, a Camera Strap for Women
If you’re a female photographer, you’re well aware that most camera straps can be less than comfortable. So to make the lives of photographic women more bearable (figuratively and literally), Black Rapid has introduced the BlackRapid RS-W1 Camera Strap, which was designed specifically for women.
According to the folks at BlackRapid, the RS-W1 camera strap is manufactured from rip stop nylon and "bomb-proof" webbing, which means it’s made to take it. On a more pedestrian level, the BlackRapid RS-W1 is fully adjustable and features ConnectR-2 and FastenR3 camera connectors for securely attaching a camera or lens to the strap.
Designed to be worn diagonally across the rib cage, the BlackRapid RS-W1 features a well-padded mesh underside that allows air flow, and a good measure of comfort on even the longest days.
So in a world of compromises and "almost-but-not-quite" solutions for women's requirements, the BlackRapid RS-W1 camera strap is a welcome real-world accessory for women photographers.

Adirondack Waters Workshop
with Mark Bowie
Adirondack Photography Institute
August 15-18, 2010
Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Blue Mountain Lake, NY
Overview:
The Adirondacks’ central lake region hosts a variety of lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands and waterfalls, each presenting a wealth of photographic opportunities. Blue Mountain Lake, Indian Lake, Lewey Lake, and Lakes Durant, Adirondack and Abanakee, Shaw Pond, the Indian River, and Buttermilk Falls are all nearby. Many of these are new locations for API workshops. Their close proximity will allow us to take advantage of sunrise and sunset conditions at several. Each reflects the landscape’s many moods and doubles the beauty through reflection. There may also be opportunities to photograph wildlife such as song birds, mallards, mergansers, loons, great blue herons, eagles, and mammals, including chipmunks, squirrels, coyote, fox, and
maybe even the elusive moose. Mark Bowie knows this region well, having photographed it extensively for his books Adirondack Waters: Spirit of the Mountains and The Adirondacks: In Celebration of the Seasons. He’ll be guiding participants to many of his favorite photo spots in the region.
Topics to be Covered:
We’ll leave plenty of time for shooting: sunrise, sunset, and, for those interested, even some nighttime shooting. Mark will lead mini-instructional sessions outdoors with specific tips and techniques for photographing water, both still and flowing. Indoor sessions will cover extended depth of field, extending your camera’s resolution, creating panoramas and high dynamic range images, the need for shooting multiple exposures, and digital workflow in Lightroom & Photoshop.
Recommended Lodging:
The nearest lodging is the rustic Blue Mountain Lake Inn at (518) 352-7600. For those with less rustic tastes, we recommend the Sandy Point Motel, the Shamrock Motel, & the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake, about 12 miles from our host, the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.
For more details & to register, see the Adirondack Photography Institute’s website: www.adkpi.org. Mark Bowie: www.markbowie.com, (413) 442-9125.

NECCC 2010 -- Our Presentations
We just got back from presenting a program entitled "Fixing Your Friends and Family with Photoshop" this weekend at the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) photography conference . We were asked to present a program at this annual (the 65th annual!) conference this past winter and we had a lot of fun putting it together. I changed the program slightly each of the three times that I gave it and we had a handful of people that came and watched the program TWICE! Hats off to them for being active learners!
We also gave a preconference hands on (or should that be laptops on?) workshop on Basic Photoshop that was completely booked. It was a three hour workshop, but could have easily gone for 8 hours. We did something different for this workshop and supplied "extra credit" images on the CD so that the people that grasped the skill easily could go on to play with more images while the true novices had more time to keep working on the in class images. Everyone received a CD with all of the images on it.
The conference attendance was 1127 people this year and it was an awesome conference! Lots of networking, idea exchanges, photo ops, showcase presentations, teaching programs, etc. Two program stick out in my head -- Andrey Antov's spectacular program on Macro photography and Ron McGill's amazing and high energy program called "Walk on the Wild side"
You can view the handouts from our preconference "Basic Photoshop" workshop, our "Fixing your Friends and Family program and from our masking program here in this folder on Box.net.
They are also posted on Goggle Documents, but some people are having trouble accessing them so I put them on Box.net just in case.

Please note that these handouts are copyrighted and that you can use them for your own education only. You may not copy or distribute the files in any manner without written permission. You may send people the link to our Blog so that they can download their own copy. Thank for for respecting the hard work and time that went into creating these.
If you purchased a CD from us at NECCC please email us at photographer67@comcast.net and we will send you those action and more actions via email.
If you would like to purchase the files on the CD from us please email us at photographer67@comcast.net and we will send you a PayPal invoice and then send you the files.
For MAC users please note that the equivalent modifier keys: the Option Key is the Mac equivalent to the PC (Alt) key and the Command Key (also called the Apple key; with its either cloverleaf symbol, the Apple symbol or both). is, more or less, the equivalent of the PC user's Control Key. Cmd = Ctrl and Opt = Alt.
Ctrl Z = UNDO (a VERY good shortcut to learn)\
Ctrl 0 (zero) --> maximize the photo
Ctrl J --> Create a new layer
C --> Crop tool
S --> Clone tool
J --> Patch tool (and healing brush)
V --> move tool
Ctrl T --> Transform
The "[" left square-bracket key will decrease brush size
The "]" right square-bracket key will increase brush size
Shift and [ or ] will soften/harden the brush edges.
B --> selects the Brush tool (this is what you will paint with)
D --> sets the color palette back to Black and White
X --> switches between Black and White
Numbers on the keyboard à affects brush opacity (to get shades of gray) i.e. 5 = 50% opacity
Non-destructive Editing -- The background layer can be thought of as the “negative”. The first layer to make is a copy of the background (shortcut = Ctrl J). All editing is done on a layer, so as to keep the original pixels intact.
· Layers are the key to good image editing. Just think of a layer as an “overhead transparecy”, each layer on top of the previous one, yielding the end final image.
· Each layer can be edited independently, deleted or hidden.
· Layers allow the original image pixels to not be destroyed during the editing process.
· You can easily adjust image effects or adjustments, even weeks or months later
