The Golden Hour

The Golden Hour (sometimes referred to as the Magic Hour) is often defined as the first and last hour of sunlight in the day when the special quality of light yields particularly beautiful photographs.

For this Golden Hour calculator website, I have used a more precise definition of the Golden Hour. I have chosen to define the Golden Hour as that period when the sun lies between the horizon and 6 degrees above. This definition of the Golden Hour more accurately accounts for the speed of the transition from day to night around the world at different times of year.

Adobe Creative Cloud Pushes Past 1 Million Subscribers; Photoshop CC and Lightroom Now Available for $9.99/mo

Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Creative Cloud Deal

After the Creative Cloud subscription method was implemented many photographers vowed to leave Adobe in the dust and proclaimed that the company would crumble and fall from the decision. Adobe’s prior goal was to reach 1 million subscribers before the end of 2013. It seems that they are ahead of schedule.
Adobe recently announced, limited time deal on Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom for $9.99 is now available from Adobe Creative Cloud. The subscription includes Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 (and for those that want it also 20 GB of online storage, Behance ProSite (custom site/portfolio hosting) and Access to the online video tutorials in Creative Cloud). You can sign up here for the Adobe Photoshop Photography Program.

Birds as Art: Photography of Arthur Morris

Arthur Morris is opening an exhibition at The Museum of American Bird Art that should be particularly interesting to your group.

Here’s some information on Arthur which you may already be familiar with.
Arthur Morris is a free-lance nature photographer and writer specializing in birds. He is widely recognized as the world’s premier bird photographer and as one of the top nature photography educators of his time. In his books and on his web site and blog his record of sharing his photographic and avian knowledge is un-matched. Arthur Morris has been a contract photographer with Canon’s “Explorers of Light” since 1995.  More than 20,000 of Artie’s images have been published in American Birds, Audubon, Birding, Birder’s World, Bird Watcher’s Digest, Duck’s Unlimted, Florida Wildlife and Nature, Living Bird, National Geographic, Natural History, Nature Photographer, Outdoor Photographer, PHOTOgraphic, Ranger Rick, Wildbird, and in counteless other magazines, as well as in hundreds of books and calendars. More than 150 photo-illustrated feature articles by and about him have appeared in a wide variety of publications worldwide.
He will be in Canton teaching a workshop on September 30th and then hosting a free lecture at Canton High School on Oct 1st.
I’m looking for the best way to spread the word.    Maybe you could post this to your site? It really is quite exciting to have him in Canton MA for an exhibition and workshops.

ask better questions

"Prevailing wisdom says there are no stupid questions. But some questions are better than others, lead us to deeper inquiry, raise new, stronger questions, and better address the reason we asked the question in the first place. "

instead of what camera did you use, ask What thought or feeling were you trying to express in this photograph?

instead of what lens did you use, ask Why did you use the lens you did instead of something tighter or wider?

Acratech Long Lens Tripod Head: The lightest way to use a long lens in the field

Acratech Long Lens Tripod Head: The lightest way to use a long lens in the field

"There is no substitute for the image quality from a pro-quality long lens when shooting wildlife or sports. Their high-quality images and fast focus speed come at a high cost in both dollars and weight, unfortunately. Adding to the weight is the need for specialized tripod heads. Conventional ballheads are seriously painful to use with long lenses, falling off to one side or the other just at the wrong time. Until now, replacement solutions have been both expensive and heavy. Whether you like the traditional Wimberley, the newer Mongoose, the nerdy Really Right Stuff offering, or even the cut downWimberley Sidekick, you’re looking at a minimum of 2 pounds and several hundred dollars (the Sidekick is the cheapest and lightest, but requires that you also bring and use a sturdy ballhead). Enter the new Acratech Long Lens Head."
