Cape Cod workshop

Cape Cod workshop

Join tour-leader Roman Kuryczwak and Betty Wiley for this special weekend workshop exploring the beauty of outer Cape Cod.  This workshop will be held from Friday evening, October 12 through Sunday evening, October 14th, and will feature a special lighthouse tour to Race Point Lighthouse in Provincetown where students will have an opportunity to photograph one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the Cape during the golden hour and at sunset.  Afterwards, we will eat dinner at a colorful, local eating establishment in Provincetown before heading to another beautiful lighthouse nearby for night photography where students will learn light painting and other low light techniques.

There are just a few spots remaining and Roman is currently offering a special $100 discount to members of the New Haven camera club.   This workshop is less than 3 weeks away.  There is no better time to visit and explore Cape Cod!

Other shooting locations will include a morning in Provincetown where students will have an opportunity to photograph picturesque Provincetown from MacMillan Wharf.   This is a working fishing community and there are lots of interesting fishing trawlers, skiffs and other boats to photograph as well as the skyline of the town itself.  This is a perfect place to use HDR (High Dynamic Range) and to capture interesting reflections in the water.   Time will be allotted in the afternoon where students can upload their images and receive tips and help processing their images from Roman and Betty.

Macro Photography Workshop with Roman M. Kurywczak

Macro Photography Workshop with Roman M. Kurywczak
Indoor flowers and still life set ups to make stunning close up images
Sunday, Sept 9th in Stratford, CT Two sessions -- 9-12 and 1-4

This in-depth Q&A macro photography lecture will show you the technical tips and tricks needed to take your macro photography to the next level!  Many people are comfortable with creating shallow focus macro images but I will show you how to achieve consistently sharp images with maximum depth of field all in a single frame!!!  Topics covered will range from gear to specific settings for you to maximize your time spent out in the field. Overcoming distracting backgrounds will be discussed in depth with photographic examples showing you how easy they are to overcome.  The use of natural light will be covered but a heavy emphasis will be placed on using flash correctly in the field to properly balance the exposure and achieve dramatic results.  We will look at some frequently used tricks by the pros that you can easily apply in the field to quickly improve your macro skills.  Many of these tips and tricks are inexpensive and can be done using the gear you already own!  You can ask questions to ensure that you go home with a better understanding of all the topics covered in the program and create tack sharp macro images of your very own.

After the presentation, Roman will guide the participants through the 4 set-ups and show them how to use their own gear to get the most out of an image. Topics ranging from maximum depth of field to shallow focus, natural lighting as well as the use of multiple flashes and reflectors will be covered. Techniques to create artistic macro images will also be explored. Participants will come away from this workshop with a better understanding of common lighting issues as well as compositional ones and how to overcome them in the field.

This is a hands-on workshop so you need to bring your camera with fully charged battery, memory card, macro lens or similar close-up lens, flash if you have one, and a tripod. Roman will be working with the students setting up the flowers at the stations and helping with any technical, lighting, or compositional questions. Each of the two sessions is limited to 12 participants.

To sign up email Lisa Cuchara at photographer67@comcast.net and send her a check for $40. You are not confirmed until payment is received. No refunds unless this class is canceled or rescheduled. But you may contact someone on the wait list and make your own arrangements with them.

Swan Island Dahlia Farm & The Oregon Garden

Charles Needle Photography Banner
Capture explosive summer color at
Swan Island Dahlia Farm & The Oregon Garden
August 27 - Sept. 1, 2012
  Dear Lisa & Tom,
I hope you're getting outside making images with your camera as much as possible this summer.

One of my all-time favorite flowers to photograph this time of year is the Dahlia.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, these tubers begin to unfold in full splendor at the end of this month.  Some of them are even dinner-plate sized!

Join me for what promises to be a magical week photographing in a 40-acre Dahlia farm just south of Portland, along with another nearby botanical garden featuring more than 20 specialty gardens and features.

You'll feel like a kid in a candy store when I teach you some of my secret macro tricks, as well as how to use your camera as a paintbrush to create Impressionistic imagery.

This is one of the best workshop values I offer all year long.....only $795 for an entire week of 1-on-1 instruction in the field and classroom! Seats are filling fast, but you can register here now.

 Here are more colorful details:
Swan Island Dahlia Farm main image

Imagine rainbows of vibrant color all erupting into spectacular and inspiring garden displays at the peak of summer growing season in the Pacific Northwest.

Join Charles for an educational and uplifting weeklong workshop, where you'll visit two breathtaking gardens just south of Portland, Oregon.

We'll spend two and a half glorious days photographing at Swan Island Dahlia Farm in Canby, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the United States, during their Annual Dahlia Festival on less-crowded weekdays.  Swan Island is a photographer's paradise, featuring more than 40 colorful acres and 350+ varieties of dahlias in all colors, shapes and sizes.

Charles will offer personalized instruction in the field to help you capture unique, artistic close-ups, as well as spectacular "intimate landscape" garden imagery.  In addition, he will demonstrate in-camera Impressionistic techniques to help you create painterly photographs using multiple-exposures, camera movement and more.

Our next stop will be The Oregon Garden in Silverton.  With more than 20 specialty gardens and features, you'll discover waterfalls, quiet ponds, fountains, a unique display of conifers, a 400-year-old Signature Oak, Northwest Garden, rose garden, and an indoor Tropical House.  Again, Charles will share tips and techniques for capturing unique close-ups and intimate garden landscapes, while learning how to go beyond documentation.

During the week, you'll also experience cutting-edge lectures, challenging photo assignments and supportive group image evaluations.

Tuition: $795.  Deposit of $100 required to hold your space.
Special discounted rooms at the Holiday Inn Portland South.
Contact the Pacific Northwest Art School and register here.

I look forward to helping you take your flower and garden photography to the next level later this summer.

Happy shooting,

Charles

Betty's Skies, Textures and Composites Post Processing Workshop Sat Sept 8th 1-4pm

Betty's Skies, Textures and Composites Post Processing Workshop
Saturday Sept 8th 1-4pm in Hamden CT

Join Betty Wiley for this 3 hour workshop on replacing skies and using various texture overlay techniques to enhance images.  This post processing workshop will be an intensive, hands-on class and students are asked to bring ~3 of their own images to work on.

Betty will be presenting a brief slide show with images she has worked on and transformed using various different techniques. This will be followed by a step-by-step demonstration which will be accompanied by a written hand-out which will allow the student to follow along.  The remainder of the workshop will be spent with students working on their own images using the techniques that Betty has demonstrated.

The goal of this workshop will be for each student to leave with a thorough understanding of the processes and techniques involved so that they are competent to do this on their own.  Betty will also provide each student with a CD of skies and textures that they can take home.   If you have wanted to learn how to replace boring, drab skies and use textures to add drama and impact to your images, now is the chance!

Need To Bring: Students will need laptops or a portable desktop with either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (a version that supports layers and masking, 9 or 10 work well) and 3-4 images that they want to work on that are preloaded onto their laptop/desktop or on a thumb drive so they can be found easily. If you do not have a laptop or desktop you can bring, you may share with a friend if that works for you.
**While high proficiency is not required for Photoshop or Elements, knowledge of how to navigate the programs, download images from a CD and find them, and move them around your laptop and software programs is required.**

Here are some examples of before and after post processing by Betty Wiley.

Bio:
Betty Wiley is an award-winning photographer who currently resides in Massachusetts on Cape Cod.  Her favorite subjects are birds and wildlife and she is an accomplished landscape photographer.  She also loves photographing children and operates a small studio out of her home, AvaGrace studio (www.Avagracestudio.com). Retired shortly over 3 years ago from a long, rewarding and successful career in the biotech industry where she specialized in licensing products to treat rare genetic diseases, she loves having the freedom now to pursue her passion for photography.  She belongs to several local camera clubs, Cape Cod Art Association Camera Club (CCAACC) where she was named “photographer of the year” for 2010, and also to Cape Cod View Finders Camera Club (CCVFCC) where her image of sandhill cranes won "image of the year" for 2011.  Betty recently received a commendable award in the International Nature Photography competition sponsored by the Audubon Society.  Betty's images frequently appear in Cape Cod magazine and she was featured in a photo essay which appeared in the July (2011) issue which showcased some of her images taken on Cape Cod and the islands.  Betty is also a Getty image contributor and has sold work to companies such as American Eagle Outfitters.

Here's an opportunity to learn from the master, you'll leave this workshop with all the tools you'll need to create your own works of art.

To sign up for this workshop, email Lisa at photographer67@comcast.net and mail her a check for $50. You are not signed up until the payment is received.

Refund Policy: If you find you cannot attend, it is up to you to find someone to take your place. Refunds only if we have to change or cancel. Thank you.

David Middleton’s Fall Photography Workshops

David Middleton’s Fall Photography Workshops

Fall in Vermont October 10th – 14th Manchester Center, Vermont
Santa Fe Workshops: www.santafeworkshops.com/photography-workshops
I call this my backyard workshop because, well, it is done in my (greater) backyard. Taught with my great friends and fellow pros Jeff Wendorff and Lisa Cueman, I take the class to all my favorite locations- tumbling mountain streams, misty ponds, colorful meadows and old barns. We also go to the wonderful old dairy farm that I did an entire book on to photograph the old-time Vermont of generations past. As a special treat we will also photograph two magnificent horses- running against a background of colorful trees and portraits of them with a dramatic black background.

Fall on the Maine Coast October 17th – 21st Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park
Santa Fe Workshops: www.santafeworkshops.com/photography-workshops
I have been going to Acadia National Park and the headlands of Down East for more than 20 years and every time I go there I find more things to photograph. Now after doing three books on the coast of Maine I appreciate the area even more. From the beautiful working harbors to the hidden ponds surrounded with color to the birch forests thick with ferns there are endless subjects to photograph. Don’t go with a group to all the standard places that everyone else has images of, come with us and get unique shots of a unique and beautiful part of our country. Taught with my great friend and fellow pro, Brenda Berry.

[MSJ Photography] : Grandeur of Autumn in New Hampshire Early-Bird Deadline Extended

Charles and I still have several spots available for the Grandeur of Autumn in New Hampshire workshop and we'd love for you to join us!  To sweeten the deal, we've extended the Early-Bird Deadline to August 31.

If you're on the fence, perhaps this brief excerpt from Bill Wolff's (a recent workshop participant) blog will entice you…

"To say that Mark Johnson is a wonderful instructor would putting it too lightly.  He is, simply, incredible.  His ability to recall the functions of Photoshop, Photomatix, and other applications was something to behold (and this is coming from someone who teaches instructional technologies at the college level).  He has boundless energy and his enthusiasm for the creative process was infectious.  We all felt it and fed off of it."

In-the-Field Follow-up Workshop

Put your newly-learned skills to use by joining denise and artie in the field at a nearby location on the Monday following the seminar. The subjects will—for the most part—be routine: gulls and Canada Geese. But we will be close to the birds and should have some flight photography opportunities. And we just might have some good chances with Snow Geese and with Brant and who knows what as well.
In-the-Field Seminar Follow-up Workshop: Queens, NY. Monday, December 10th, 2012. Two sessions: 5:45-10:30am and 2:30-4:30pm. Two great leaders: Limit: 16 photographers: $350 per person.
We will consider an overflow session on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 if the first day sells out and/or for folks who wish to do two full days.
