Stockbridge holiday photo op

The town of Stockbridge, made famous by Norman Rockwell's painting of the village during the holidays, becomes a magical New England setting decorated with holiday wreaths and festive lights, as the town celebrates the 21st annual Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas, December 3rd and 4th.

Sponsored by the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce, the holiday celebration offers a full range of activities, with highlights including a holiday house tours, caroling, and a holiday concert. Capping off the weekend is a re-creation on Sunday of the scene depicted in Main Street at Christmas, complete with vintage automobiles parked in the spots occupied in the painting. The day's activities include horse drawn rides, a visit from Santa, Roger the Jester, lunch at the Christmas Food Booth and much more.

For more information check out the official event website at: http://www.stockbridgechamber.org/christmas.html

Saturday. She is giving preference to CAP members, but will also accept non-CAP photographers on a space available basis. If you are interested contact Debbie immediately at ddonofrio@snet.net

Photographing the Landscape at Night with Mark Bowie

Photographing the Landscape at Night

September 10

Worcester, Massachusetts

with Mark Bowie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview

Some of Nature’s most spectacular beauty is reserved for the landscape at night. And at night, the camera allows us to record phenomena we are physically incapable of seeing. Long exposures capture celestial objects in motion, creating metaphors for the passage of time and seasons. They register incredible detail and rich colors. The photographer can’t be sure what he or she will create, and that’s part of the allure and the excitement!

Night shooting specialist Mark Bowie, author of The Light of Midnight: Photographing the Landscape at Night, will lead an indoor instructional session followed by a nighttime field session. He’ll cover strategies, tips and techniques, including:

• Camera settings — RAW, BULB, ISO, white balance

• Consulting the histogram

• Composing and focusing in the dark

• Using LiveView at night

• Determining nighttime exposures

• High ISO test shots

• Shooting long exposures by ambient light

• Shooting time intervals

• Shooting base exposures and multiple exposures

• “Painting” with artificial light

• Photographing moonlit landscapes, the stars, planets, meteors, the Northern Lights and other celestial phenomena

• Photographing lightning and fireworks

• Noise Reduction in-camera and in post-processing

• Processing night images

• Combining multiple exposures, Layer Masks

Mark’s coverage of nighttime photography exposes participants to the many opportunities of capturing the natural landscape in the context of the heavenly skies. Come expand your image-making beyond daylight shooting, creating images that evoke the majesty, awe and wonder of the landscape at night.

Instructor: Mark Bowie

Who Should Attend:  All skill levels welcome. Participants should have a basic familiarity with their camera’s features and operation.

Computer Skills:  None needed, although a basic familiarity with Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture may be helpful.

Other Considerations: Locations visited during this workshop are easily accessible and do not require any strenuous hiking or climbing.

Group Size: 15 max.

Registration Fees: $99 tuition paid-in-full at time of registration. Click here for information on any discounts that may be available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Itinerary

Cricket Hill Garden’s Peonies

Tom and I went to this awesome and peaceful garden twice over Memorial Day weekend. We went Friday -- and we saw Paula and Pat and Carol and a few other photographers! What a place for flowers! Peonies and various perennials. and They have HUUUUGE Frogs as well! What a place -- if you have never been there you have to go visit! Lisa

Cricket Hill Garden’s Annual Peony Festival 2011

May 1st to June 19th 2011
Garden hours : Tuesday - Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm.
Closed Mondays ... except Memorial Day, May 30th we will be open.

2011 marks our 22nd year of growing peonies here at Cricket Hill Garden. We have invited people to see the bloom since 1993. Our still expanding display collection of 300 + varieties of peonies begin to bloom in early May. Every week for a period of about 6 weeks, there are different peonies in bloom. The Chinese tree peonies bloom first, followed by the Japanese tree peonies, and then American varieties.

A trip to our garden/nursery will delight you. Our 7-acre garden, is set in a terraced woodland of northwestern Connecticut. Visit us for a great day trip from all parts of Connecticut, western and central Massachusetts, most parts of New York and New Jersey. Come see the garden and bring home a plant of your own from our selection of potted peonies. We have many container plants, though not every variety we list on our web site is potted. Many are field grown and we will reserve for digging. We have additional varieties not listed on our website in pots. We also have a selection of younger potted peonies in our 'Prudent Purchase Corner' as well as older plants in the 'Collectors' Corner.'

Special weeks and bloom times during our celebration of the flowers:

Fancy Bloomers Peony Party II - May 31st to June 5th
Japanese tree peonies, late Chinese, American tree peonies, herbaceous and intersectional peonies- all bloomin’ their heads off for you.

Meet the Artist, Mundy Hepburn: Garden Glass June 4th, 2-4 pm. See the wonderful glass sculpture on display in the garden.

Grand Finale Peony Herbaceous – June 7th to the 12th
The late bloomers send us off into summer. Many herbaceous peony specials, be sure to visit.

The garden will be open during our regular hours of Tuesday -Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm for the late herbaceous blooms until the Sunday, June 19th. Depending on the weather, the peony bloom may last this long into the season. In 2003 to 2008, we did have late blooming herbaceous peonies go to the first day of summer. In '09 and '10, very warm and early springs ended the season by June 10th. We will post updates as we see the weather progressing in 2011.

For directions to Cricket Hill Garden click here.

We are located in Thomaston, CT, in the foothills of the Berkshires, northwestern Connecticut. It's a lovely area to visit for an afternoon, a day or a weekend. http://www.treepeony.com/

Polly's pancake

I received a couple of comments about why I posted about Polly's pancakes yesterday, in relation to how was this an item of photographic interest. I guess I assumed that everyone knew about Polly's, LOL. If you have never been there you must go!!! They are located in the Sugar Hill area of NH, beautiful in the Fall, but absolutely tremendous in the Spring with the LUPINES! All of the photogs I know go to the area and do early sunrise and photograph the lupines and then head to Polly's for the most amazing breakfast! They make the pancakes using these interesting pewter. There are lupines in the field at St. Matthew's Church and at Polly's itself.
