Save the Date: "Through the Lens of Adam Jones" Saturday, April 9, 2011

New Haven Camera Club celebrates 100 years!! Film to Digital...WOW! As part of this celebration, please join us for an all day seminar. Details to follow.

Save the Date: "Through the Lens of Adam Jones"
Date: Saturday, April 9, 2011

Where: Holiday Inn, North Haven, CT

Please join the New Haven Camera Club as it celebrates its 100 year anniversary with an all day seminar by Adam Jones. Mr. Jones has been shooting professionally for over twenty years. He is a member of the Canon Explorers of Light Program.
"My general approach for an all day seminar is to present two shows: The day is kicked off with a Nature and Wildlife show. A second show is presented during the afternoon session, featuring Travel destinations. Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. The program is entitled "Through the Lens of Adam Jones." During the Nature program I discuss strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images."

Over the day, I'll present at least three additional programs, these include the following:
1) Taking Control
2) Lighting & Composition
3) Extending the Limits
4) Travel Show

5) Photoshop

NHCC's Centennial celectration -- Paul's Judging workshop was a resounding success!

Kudos to Paul Peterson for setting up and presenting the judging workshop that was held today in Branford, CT. It was a resounding success! This workshop was part of the New Haven Camera Club's Centennial celebration.

62 photographers (camera club judges, potential judges and interested parties) attended to learn about the strengths and weakness of judging photographs. It was an enlightening experience. We did not solve the world's problems (or should I say the world of camera club's problems) but we all came away with a better understanding of what makes a photograph less like a snapshot and more like Fine Art (technical aspects, the composition, the overall interest and the impact). We also learned about the inherent subjective nature of photography and how to make better comments (start with something positive and then move to a constructive criticism). After the mock judging portion of the program we split into four groups of 15. My group was only consistent with regard to their scores on 2 or 3 images, for many we were scoring 6 or 7 to 9 or 10, with impact (that "wow" factor) being the largest variable (and the hardest to make consistent)

We got to meet a lot of camera club members from across CT; some from as far away as Canton, Harwinton and Tolland, CT. Needless to say it was well received and we hope we can do it again next year. Someone suggested that we make this an annual event, with a different Connecticut camera club hosting each year. I think that would be awesome. I also learned that Bridegport meets an hour before their meeting to talk about aspects that make a photograph good and about judging and that Norwalk has a monthly judging forum.

Immense gratitude to Paul! Thanks to Linda Thomas, Bob and Laura Parisi for their help purchasing and setting up the food. A special thanks for Carmel for her hard work and the great coffee cake!

NHCC First Program Sept 8th

Waterways of the Czars Kathy Katz and Sandy Sanderson will present this ProShow Gold digital program of their fantastic 14 day journey on the Waterways of the Czars—in which they cruised from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Between them, they took over 4,000 images, but you can relax, as they have worked hard and you will only get to see about 350 of the best! Each of the cities could be a show in itself. For this presentation, a combination of dialogue and music will enhance the photography as a travelogue sampler showing highlights of their journey.

NHCC Changes to Category Competition for 2008-09

Changes to NHCC Category Competition for 2008-09

At the Executive Committee meeting in July several changes were made to the Category Competition (sometimes referred to as the assignment competition) for next season. This rest of the rules as stated in the NHC handbook http://www.newhavencameraclub.org/handbook.htm still apply. For example, Category images still must not be older than 5 years old.

The changes will make the Category Competition more like the Open Competitions, will make the Category Competition more meaningful, and will increase the opportunity for more members to have their photographs selected as ribbon winning photographs. The winning images are those who show the best interpretation of the category title which adheres to definition.

As was true last year, there will be a Category Competition only for electronic (digital) photographs.

The rule changes are:

1. The Category Competition will be scored by the judges using the SAME numerical scoring system that is used to score the Open Competitions. The in and out scoring system will be eliminated.

2. Ties will not be broken, again like the Open Competitions.

3. The number of photographs that may be entered by a member into a given Category Competition is reduced to 2 from the current 3, again like the Open Competitions.

4. Unlike the Open Competitions, no make-up photographs will be permitted.

5. To qualify for the High Cumulative Score in the Category Competition, a member must submit at least 10 photographs of the possible 16 photographs. A member who submits more than 10 photographs will have his/her cumulative score determined by summing the highest scoring 10 photographs. Thus, it is to your advantage to enter as many photographs as possible since the 10 highest scoring photographs will be used to determine the final score.

The assigned subjects for the 2008-09 season are:

Sept: Children
Oct: Railroad
Nov: Sunrise/Sunset
Jan: Boats or ships
Feb: Abstraction(s)
March: Motion and Blur
April: Patterns or Textures
May: Architecture

Check out the NHCC website for more information... http://www.newhavencameraclub.org/assigned_subjects.htm
