How to Get Started With Light Painting

How to Get Started With Light Painting

What is Light Painting and How Does it Work?

Things You Will Need
A camera with manual settings and bulb (B) mode.
A sturdy tripod.
A shutter release cable with locking mechanism or remote with timer function.
A light source of some kind. This could be a flashlight, an LED, a neon glow stick, even a flash unit.
A dark environment. You can work indoors in a room with all the lights turned out and windows blocked, or you can work outdoors at nighttime.

How to Use Shutter Speed for More Powerful Images

"Of all a camera’s available settings and functions, the one that most allows you to convey a sense of energy in your work is shutter speed. It is shutter speed that, in numerous scenarios, provides for the greatest degree of flexibility in terms of how you present your subject to the viewer."

Art and Ann Yost earn honors at NECCC , they are now MNEC

Hi Lisa, I made this composite from two photographs of Art and Ann Yost getting their MNEC. If you don't get anything better you can use it for the Blog. Regards, Jim Dionne

Master Member, New England Camera Club Council – MNEC

Awarded to those who have performed exceptional service for the Council during a period of not less than five years, and/or have substantially advanced photography in the New England area through lecturing, teaching, judging, and through other administrative activities in photographic organizations for the same period. This honor is limited to a maximum of five each year.

The NECCC Honors are awarded in recognition of contribution to the advancement of the art and science of photography in the New England area. Quality of character, administrative activities, service through lecturing, teaching, judging, and writing are as important as an outstanding competition record. Before proposing a candidate, weigh carefully the responsibility you are assuming and your duty to the New England Camera Club Council. These considerations should transcend any desire you may have to do a favor for someone. Do not submit an application unless you are fully convinced that the candidate’s qualifications are far above average. Try to give the committee a verbal picture of the candidate as an individual as well as a photographer. Present all facts in a brief and concise manner, avoiding exaggeration. List the candidate’s qualifications under each of these general headings: (1) Administrative Activities (2) (A) Lecturing, (B) Judging, (C) Teaching, (D) Writing (3) (A) Photographic Achievements, (B) Exhibition Record, (C) Competition Awards (4) Other Qualifications

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II Lens Rumors

Canon 100-400mm L Lens
We’ve been waiting on a replacement for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lens for years. Since last year though rumors have continued to build fairly steadily.
Now, we’re starting to hear that it may be released alongside the 7D Mark II, which is rumored to land on September 5, 2014 just prior to Photokina. The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens is further rumored to feature a rotating zoom ring (something we’ve heard before) and a new IS system.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II Lens Rumored Features

  • Rotating zoom ring
  • New IS system
  • Lighter weight than predecessor
  • 82mm filter thread
  • New coating
  • $2399 USD
If these rumors hold water, expect to hear a lot more in the next month as we lead up to the announcement.

How to Fix Blemishes and Reduce Wrinkles in Lightroom

How to Fix Blemishes and Reduce Wrinkles in Lightroom

A common question we get in the free webinars and at the help desk is how to fix blemishes without taking the image to Photoshop. Many Lightroom users do not realize how useful the "spot removal tool" can be for fixing blemishes such as scratches, food particles, pimples, etc.
This tool continues to be improved with each Lightroom release and really can handle most of your healing and cloning needs.

Adobe has announced a release candidate for Camera Raw 8.6

Adobe Camera Raw 8.6 Release Candidate Now Available

Adobe Camera Raw 8.6
Adobe has announced a release candidate for Camera Raw 8.6, which adds RAW file support to several new cameras listed below.
The release candidate also includes improvements for batch processing and color matching profiles for the Sony RX100 IIISony A7S, and Sony Alpha A77 II. Additionally, there are several new lens profiles now supported.
Bug fixes in Camera Raw 8.6 include the following:
  • Fix crash on launch in some cases on Hi DPI (Retina) systems.
  • Fix crash when opening some Sigma SD9 raw files.
  • Fix issue with JPEG images saved by Camera Raw not readable in some external applications.
  • Fix automatic lens profile selection for Leica M (Typ 240) when using most recent firmware version.
  • Fix issue with some Hasselblad H5D-50c and H5D-60 3FR raw images appearing slightly too dark. Unfortunately, this fix may affect the appearance of existing images captured with this combination of settings. It is recommended that you (1) purge the Camera Raw cache via the Camera Raw Preferences dialog, and (2) review previously captured images for unexpected brightness changes.
You can download the release candidate at the following link from Adobe Labs:
Remember, this is a release candidate, which means it has been pretty well tested and Adobe thinks it is ready for full release; however, it’s recommended that you keep production work to prior versions until the official release drops. Expect those to come soon though. Release candidates mean that the final versions are just around the corner.

Avoid These 10 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Image Quality

"How many times have you captured an amazing image only to view it on your computer, or as a print, and realize that you screwed something up along the way.
