ARIZONA BIRD AND NATIVE HERP WORKSHOP

ARIZONA BIRD AND NATIVE HERP WORKSHOP 5-10 December 2009

Max four (4) participants

From: Tucson, Arizona

Join naturalists and photographers Rick Bowers and Chris Scott in Tucson for a five day all-inclusive shoot of Arizona’s birds and native reptile and amphibian specialties such as Gila Monster, Green Toad, Black-tailed Rattlesnake and others.

Come take advantage of the low winter desert light and photograph birds at the height of their fresh plumage. We start with three days photographing birds at the peak of their fresh plumage at the fantastic Pond at Elephant Head. If you are not familiar with The Pond, it is a small oasis with water and food and is a magnet for desert wildlife. Shoot Pyrrhuloxia, Northern Cardinal, Canyon & Green-tailed towhees, Curve-billed Thrasher, Ladder-backed & Gila woodpeckers, Gambel's Quail, Greater Roadrunner and more. The spectacular low desert light makes the birds glow and their immaculate feathers will make images even more stunning!

Then spend two full days shooting a variety of colorful and unique herps. Possible model species include, but are not limited to, several species of rattlesnakes, kingsnakes, Gopher Snake, Sonoran Whipsnake, Coachwhip, Long-nosed Snake, whiptail lizards, spiny lizards, Gila Monsters, Western Banded Gecko, Madrean Alligator Lizard, Desert Tortoise, Sonoran Desert and Great Plains toads, and spadefoot toads.

In addition we will have a few arthropods such as scorpions and tarantulas to learn a different mode of photography. Most of our photography will be in our indoor studio on carefully manicured, colorful sets, but will also venture out into the nearby Saguaro-Palo Verde desert for some wide angle images of Gila Monsters and others. We will also have a special session photographing rattlesnakes striking using high speed flash! Get out of the cold and snow and join us for sun, fun and wonderful image making!
