Photograph retouched to modify the physical appearance of a person
"Like many Western countries, France requires health warnings on tobacco and alcohol and similar labels on processed food containing genetically modified ingredients. France's regulators are also notoriously tough on marketing campaigns that make false product claims. Now some French legislators want to take consumer protection to an unprecedented level, requiring that advertisements, product labels and even campaign posters carry a warning when they feature a photograph that's been digitally enhanced."
"Her proposed legislation would require doctored photos meant for public distribution to carry the warning "Photograph retouched to modify the physical appearance of a person." Anyone violating the rule could be fined about $55,000. Since she presented her draft to parliamentary committees in September, Boyer has been joined by more than 50 other legislators who want to see it introduced as formal legislation and voted on in the coming months."
ARIZONA BIRD AND NATIVE HERP WORKSHOP
ARIZONA BIRD AND NATIVE HERP WORKSHOP 5-10 December 2009
Max four (4) participants
From: Tucson, Arizona
Join naturalists and photographers Rick Bowers and Chris Scott in Tucson for a five day all-inclusive shoot of Arizona’s birds and native reptile and amphibian specialties such as Gila Monster, Green Toad, Black-tailed Rattlesnake and others.
Come take advantage of the low winter desert light and photograph birds at the height of their fresh plumage. We start with three days photographing birds at the peak of their fresh plumage at the fantastic Pond at Elephant Head. If you are not familiar with The Pond, it is a small oasis with water and food and is a magnet for desert wildlife. Shoot Pyrrhuloxia, Northern Cardinal, Canyon & Green-tailed towhees, Curve-billed Thrasher, Ladder-backed & Gila woodpeckers, Gambel's Quail, Greater Roadrunner and more. The spectacular low desert light makes the birds glow and their immaculate feathers will make images even more stunning!
Then spend two full days shooting a variety of colorful and unique herps. Possible model species include, but are not limited to, several species of rattlesnakes, kingsnakes, Gopher Snake, Sonoran Whipsnake, Coachwhip, Long-nosed Snake, whiptail lizards, spiny lizards, Gila Monsters, Western Banded Gecko, Madrean Alligator Lizard, Desert Tortoise, Sonoran Desert and Great Plains toads, and spadefoot toads.
In addition we will have a few arthropods such as scorpions and tarantulas to learn a different mode of photography. Most of our photography will be in our indoor studio on carefully manicured, colorful sets, but will also venture out into the nearby Saguaro-Palo Verde desert for some wide angle images of Gila Monsters and others. We will also have a special session photographing rattlesnakes striking using high speed flash! Get out of the cold and snow and join us for sun, fun and wonderful image making!

"New gallery finds worth in marriage of technologies"
Belmont, Mass. - In the midst of the digital age, photography is changing. More people have access to cameras and the means to take thousands of photographs at one time. Stored on computers, those photos can be shared online with family and friends around the world.
But there are still artists who use film, and those who choose to display their artwork the old-fashioned way. Into that breech steps the Griffin Museum with a collaborative approach to sharing art with the public.
Based in Winchester, the museum was founded in 1992 to provide a forum for the exhibition of both historic and contemporary photography. Director Paula Tognarelli recently announced the creation of a satellite gallery in Belmont, at Digital Silver Imaging. Dubbed “the Griffin Museum at Digital Silver Imaging,” the gallery is a collaboration that “helps make all the parties involved stronger,” Tognarelli said.
“I’d love to expand our brick and mortar building here,” she said, “but in the trying economic times, I don’t want to put that burden on the public through a capital campaign. Through this collaboration, they have their walls that we can put to good use. It helps the artists, the hosting organizations and the Griffin.”
Digital Silver Imaging is a newcomer to Belmont, and is “a marvelous resource for the photographic community,” according to Tognarelli. Located on Brighton Street, adjacent to Zeff Photo Supply, the company opened in September 2008 and specializes in making “true” black-and-white prints from digital images. “We are the only lab in New England that is doing true black-and-white printing from digital files,” owner Eric Luden said. “We skip the film altogether.”
A laser exposes the image onto photographic paper, which is automatically cut to size and sent directly into the photographic developing chemicals. The result is a professional print that is a “blend of the best of both worlds,” he said. Digital images can be sent to the company via its Web site, printed, and shipped anywhere in the world. Luden, who has an extensive background in the photo industry, said a partnership with the Griffin was a natural step for both entities.
“I always intended to have a gallery,” he said, “and when I set up [the shop], I wanted to have display space. It was a natural [partnership]. I like the quality of work at the Griffin Museum, and I like what they’re doing.”
The gallery begins. The gallery officially opened Wednesday with an exhibit by Somerville-based photographer Meg Birnbaum, “Corn Dogs and Blue Ribbons.” For two summers, Birnbaum visited 14 regional fairs in New England, ranging from small 4H events to huge expositions, and “was smitten.” “I was surprised at how vividly I remembered the fairs of my youth,” she said. “I found that then and now, fairs are a complicated balance of startling innocence and huckster sleaze.” Birnbaum photographed the fairs using basic, plastic cameras and black and white film.
“I purposely wanted to lose sharp detail and instead capture a fleeting moment, a broad stroke, the distillation of the experience in the hope of capturing iconic imagery,” she said.
Tognarelli said Birnbaum was chosen as the inaugural artist because her images are so accessible. “They remind me of my childhood, and probably that of many others, when I enjoyed carnival rides,” she said.
The gallery is open to the public Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or by appointment by calling 781-729-1158. All artwork is available for sale.

Camera-hogging squirrel an Internet sensation
"The camera’s self-timer was set and Alberta’s Banff National Park was providing a beautiful backdrop for a beaming couple when a wide-eyed ground squirrel popped into the frame and stole the shot. The camera’s focus locked onto the squirrel and the squirrel stared right back. A few feet behind the furry model, Melissa Brandts and her husband Jackson burst into laughter, their smiles blurred by the camera lens now focussed on the intruder. The finished product? A surprising, funny and adorable shot photographer Melissa calls “A once in a lifetime moment.” The squirrel photo, submitted to the magazine, was posted in its “Daily Dozen” gallery of readers’ pictures. Since then, newspapers around the world have written about the curious squirrel and links to the photo have flooded the web. Some people can’t get enough of the squirrel and have already turned the critter into an Internet meme. In a practice dubbed “squirrel bombing,” the same Alberta squirrel is cut out and can be found on the Net popping up in front of a Bill Clinton press conference and a Paris Hilton red carpet appearance.
From the Youtube posting, "The famous Photobomber Squirrel of Banff National Park now on film, doing his photobomb routine throughout the Park. The Crasher Squirrel in the famous picture has been showing up all around the Park. He's nuts in front of the camera. The Banff Crasher Squirrel has appeared on TV and in newspapers around the world, including CBC and CNN and the Banff Crasher Squirrel has sparked a wave of photoshop photos and avatars making Banff Crasher Squirrel the latest internet celebrity."
