Ten Ways To Improve Your Craft Without Buying Gear.

Ten Ways To Improve Your Craft Without Buying Gear.

David duCheminTEN was David duChemin's first eBook and still the most popular by a landslide. The premise is simple, if photographers could cut through the noise and work on their craft without being bombarded with the need to buy more gear, and the newest and shiniest, we'd become better at our craft and create more compelling images. TEN is exactly what it says it is, an exploration of ten techniques and ideas that can improve any photographer's work.TEN was written in response to the question, "so where do I go from here, once I've learned how to use my camera?" TEN responds to that and gives you ten solid steps to take on your photographic journey, each with accompanying creative exercises, and none of them asking you to buy new gear.

Below the Horizon - a 40 page downloadable PDF ebook

BELOW THE HORIZON, Dave Delnea

Below The Horizon, Understanding Light at the Edges of Day, is written by Dave Delnea.
Equally inspiring as it is instructional, Below The Horizon will change the way you look at, and photograph, light.Below The Horizon is a 40 page downloadable eBook in PDF format.Still only USD $5.00 http://www.craftandvision.com/

Below The Horizon was written by a photographer whose commercial work includes some of the finest resort properties in the world. Dave Delnea’s ability to see and capture the mood present in light at the edges of day have garnered him some exceptional clients and produced some amazing images. His secret is no secret at all; simply to understand and capture the light that is uniquely present when the sun is below the horizon and other photographers have put their cameras away. Editor’s Note: I am really excited about this book, not because it’s full of secrets, it really isn’t, but because it was reading the rough drafts for this book that inspired me on a recent trip to Kenya to shoot images I am more excited about than I have been in a long time. The inspiration to go out and shoot in the exceptional edge of day light has re-ignited an excitement I’d lost in the busyness of being a working photographer. Highly recommended! Photographer Launches Expanded Version of Free Online Photography Book

Photographer Launches Expanded Version of Free Online Photography Book

Lexar Elite Photographer Rolando Gomez Releases

New Version of Photographic Therapy - The Power of Photography to Help Build or Rebuild Self-Esteem

SAN ANTONIO, TX--(February, 2010) - Rolando Gomez, a Lexar Elite Photographer and established author of several photography books, has released an expanded, 105-page version of his free photography book, Photographic Therapy - The Power of Photography to Help Build or Rebuild Self-Esteem. The book can be downloaded in PDF form at www.freephotographybooks.com

"The book is completely free -- no gimmicks, no adware, no spyware," said Gomez, who attributes the strength of the book's editorial content to senior editor and former Studio Photography magazine editor Alice Miller. "

A book like this is normally $40, but given the current state of the economy, I wanted to give a free resource to the photography industry and educate photographers about how they can use their lens to make people feel comfortable and good about themselves."

Photographic therapy, or the use of photography to build or rebuild self-esteem, is quickly gaining notoriety in the United States as a supplemental component to traditional therapy options. In 2009, it became a hot-button topic in the photography industry when journalist Melissa Whitworth wrote the article, "Posing naked for a women's magazine felt brave and shocking," for the United Kingdom's version of Glamour magazine. Since then, Gomez has leveraged that article to further propel his message of using the lens to build internal beauty. "As a photographer with 30-plus years of experience, I've photographed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of women in various age groups, primarily 18-62 years of age," said Gomez. "It turns out, many of these photographic sessions fit the classification of photographic therapy -- not just a photography portrait, private glamour, or glamour photography shoot, but a photography session that helps build or rebuild self-esteem in my subjects."

Several veteran photographers, including Peter Geller, winner of the 1971 World Press Photo of the Year award, and Robert Farber of Photoworkshop.com, have lauded Gomez's book as an essential resource for photographers. "You have something special here with this book," said Robert Farber. "It's sincere, informative and comes from your heart." In addition to further spreading the message of photographic therapy, Gomez believes free, on-demand books are the future of the publishing industry.

To download Gomez's free photography book, visit www.freephotographybooks.com

To view Gomez's portfolio site, visit www.rolandogomez.com (Please note: Book contains images of partially clothed women and might be inappropriate for children under 18).

About Rolando Gomez Rolando Gomez, a Lexar Elite Photographer, transitioned from combat photography to glamour photography in 1999 and still freelances as a photojournalist. Known for his "flamour" (fashion and glamour) style of photography, he's taught more than 400 workshops and seminars in Mexico, Canada, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States. He also provides private photography instruction and private glamour photography.

Governor's Footguard Dog Show Feb 21 http://www.governorsfootguard.com/dogshow/
Feb, 21, 2010 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

XL Center Exhibition Hall 1 Civic Center Plaza Hartford, CT 06106

An AKC sanctioned all breed, obedience and junior dog show. Public is invited to watch the competition and meet the dog owners and handlers. ADMISSION: Adults $8

About the Foot Guard Dog Show... Since the 1920’s, the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Athletic Association has sponsored, with a small number of exceptions, an annual AKC sanctioned dog show. The current format of the show is All Breed, Obedience and Junior Showmanship (AB/O/JSHW). Dogs entered in our show compete for championship points. We generally have around 1200 dogs entered in our show representing all seven groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding) and representing about 140 different breeds. These entrants come from all over the United States and Canada. Our show is held, generally, on the third Sunday in February of the year. We partner with the Elm City Kennel Club, who holds their show the day prior to ours and we use the same venue. For the past several years, that venue has been the XL Center in Hartford, CT. The Hartford Obedience Training Club runs the obedience trials at our show. Our dog show superintendent is MB-F, Inc. of Greensboro, NC, one of the premier dog show producers and managers in the United States. Some of the proceeds of our dog show are used to fund two scholarships that are given to pre-veterinary students at the University of Connecticut; one attending the School of Agriculture and one attending the School of Natural Resources. In addition to our AKC sanctioned show, we also hold a match dog show sometime in late September or early October. This is an informal or ‘practice’ show so no championship points are awarded. Instead, it is an opportunity for dogs and handlers to learn how to show. Our match show is held and the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard reservation in Avon, CT. Questions or comments? Due to the popularity of digital cameras, image editing programs are readily available. At this moment, we believe Adobe Photoshop is still the most powerful program on market which perform a large variety of advanced image manipulations. However, not everyone will afford to get a copy for popular raster-based digital image editors like Adobe Photoshop if all one need to do is just basic image editing.

Controversy over new photo magazine "Pilfered"

I have been seeing more and more comments and controversy over this magazine so I just had to let you all know the scoop...Lisa

The magazine's website states "PILFERED is a place where artists, photographers, designers, and the inspired can submit their favorite visuals pilfered from the web to share with one another. Founded on the spirit of web democracy, and built to aid in communicating ideas and concepts, PILFERED Magazine aims to assist in speaking the thousand words – visually."

I copied and pasted the article from Fast Media Group http://www.fastmediamagazine.com/?p=3753 here for you...

"If you’re a photographer, you should check out this site, Pilfered magazine. Since it’s launch, it has had an angry response from many in the photography community due to its call to submit images for the magazine, which it then intends to use without paying any copyright. On their about page the site is described as follows:

The site is urging readers to actively ‘pilfer’ the web for photography that can be used in the magazine. There will be no payment and credit will only be given if a photographer chases it. The site puts the responsibility with those submitting the content. It appears the team behind the site has spent years using content from the web for commercial presentations and now wants to create a place to share the best work, albeit without paying contributors.

The response from photographers to the site has been one of shock and anger. Many of the comments on the About page threaten with legal action. Both John Harrington and PDN Pulse have written about the website. In their comments they point to the appropriation of content without payment and credit. ‘Robin Hood’ of the web or copyright theft. What’s your opinion? "

Focus Fallibility: Lens Test Fallacies

Focus Fallibility: Lens Test Fallacies June 19, 2008 by Dave Etchells

http://www.slrgear.com/articles/focus/focus.htm The Goal: Test the Lens and Only the Lens

It should come as no surprise that the expanding interest in lens performance generated by the digital SLR explosion has resulted in much greater testing and review of SLR lenses by various organizations. Unfortunately, as far as we can determine from published accounts of various testing methodologies, a lot of the test data being posted is of suspect value, for a very simple reason: Inadequate control of focus. The purpose of this article is to call attention to this issue, and hopefully to encourage current and would-be lens testers to adopt more rigorous procedures that properly control for focus.
