Take a sharp photo of action that’s so incredibly fast, the human eye can’t see it.

Mission Impossible? Take a sharp photo of action that’s so incredibly fast, the human eye can’t see it. That’s the assignment photographer Ben Clay gave himself.

Ben experimented with several lighting setups and concluded that he needed each light to do a specific job: A soft main light to render overall dimensional shape to the body of water. Hard gelled rim lights to add sparkle and color on the edges of every single droplet. A single, focused background light for a vignetted effect. Black (negative) fill reflectors to add contrast to the water droplets.

Put your newly-learned skills to use by joining denise and artie in the field at a nearby location on the Monday following the seminar. The subjects will—for the most part—be routine: gulls and Canada Geese. But we will be close to the birds and should have some flight photography opportunities. And we just might have some good chances with Snow Geese and with Brant and who knows what as well.
In-the-Field Seminar Follow-up Workshop: Queens, NY. Monday, December 10th, 2012. Two sessions: 5:45-10:30am and 2:30-4:30pm. Two great leaders: Limit: 16 photographers: $350 per person.
We will consider an overflow session on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 if the first day sells out and/or for folks who wish to do two full days.

Why Monitor Calibration Matters

Why Monitor Calibration Matters

"Every photographer loves to capture a perfectly exposed image that is a dream to bring through post production. Yet every photographer has also experienced the heartbreak when prints of that image somehow just don’t hit the mark. What the heck happened?"

"You just received your prints from the vendor with whom you placed your order — or maybe from your own photo printer down the hall or across the room. You’ve waited for your prints with great anticipation. As you open the package and slip them out, your heart falls. The prints look terrible and you think to yourself, “This printer stinks.” Well, maybe. Then again, maybe not. Those lousy looking prints could actually be your fault. When was the last time you calibrated your monitor?"

Loons and Songbirds Workshop for 2013

New Workshop for 2013

Loons and Songbirds

Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada

June 15-19, 2013 (4 nights)

June 20-24, 2013 (4 nights)

Leaders: Alan Murphy & Greg Downing

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to photograph Common Loons, with chicks, at close range, as well as many other species that nest in the area. With just 6 participants and 2 leaders
in this intimate small group setting, you can expect to learn the techniques Greg and Alan use to capture captivating images of these birds as they go about courtship, feeding, nesting and
brooding their chicks. A special treat will be photographing the other "bonus" birds in and around the area, all the while learning the techniques Alan and Greg use to get the best image
out of each opportunity.

Aside from the hands on instruction, Greg and Alan will both present a series of teaching presentations, as well as work closely with each participant on image critiquing and technical
instruction, specifically targeted to your individual needs throughout the trip. We will also do extensive field scouting before the workshop, with the goal of creating as many photographic
opportunities as possible. Our resort sits right on the main lake, where the loons nest and raise their young. All meals, lodging and other expenses, as well as un-intimidating and casual
photographic instruction are included - all you have to do is get yourself there, and we will take care of the rest!

On the water, we have access to up to 4 pairs of loons and the timing is planned around the hatching and brooding of chicks. On some mornings 6-12 single loons have been photographed together, right in front of lodge. Most of the loons are friendly and fairly easy to photograph at close range. Besides the Common Loons on the lakes possible additional subjects include: Marsh Wren, Black Tern, Common Yellowthroat, Barrow's Goldeneye with chicks, Red-necked Grebe and other Ducks with chicks. In the area and at the lodge feeders, you can expect to see and photograph: Stellars Jay, Junco, Pine Siskin, Casins Finch, Grey Jay, Hairy, Downy and Three-toed Woodpecker, Mountain & Black-capped Chickadee, Red-naped Sapsucker, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Rufous & Calliope hummingbird and more! There is always a chance we will see a bear or Moose in the area as well. A special focus on creating set up shots of these birds will be included!

We will have exclusive use of two dedicated boats specifically set up for photography, as well as unlimited access to a number of kayaks, canoes and small motor boats. We are at 4200' elevation and the city, which is only 20 minutes away, is 1100' elevation - this provides a variety of bird species, as well as wildflowers for us to photograph! We can usually enjoy great blue sky weather and warm days during time of year.

We will be doing setups for many of the feeder species, pre scouting for nesting Woodpeckers and finding birds on territory. It will be a packed and productive workshop.

With only 6 spots available, this workshop will sell out fast.

Google Buys Nik to Lure Photographers to Google Plus

Google Buys Nik to Lure Photographers to Google Plus

"Google said on Monday that it had acquired Nik Software, a company that makes tools for editing and sharing photos. It is Google’s latest defensive move against Facebook and part of its strategy to become a photo-sharing hub."

"Google seems most interested in Nik’s mobile and online tools and how they can improve Google Plus. Google declined to say whether or when it would discontinue any of Nik’s other products, like desktop software for professional photographers."

How to Train Yourself to Hunt Down the Perfect Photograph

The Art of the Local Photo Safari – How to Find Interesting Photo Subjects When There Are None

We’ve all been there, wandering around the house aimlessly, wishing there was something interesting to take a picture of. We sigh, and stare at our beautiful camera sitting there, taunting us with its beautiful strap, calling out to be picked up and shouldered. Then, we throw ourselves onto the couch and peer listlessly out the window wishing we were in Italy, or perhaps Africa. Moscow would be nice this time of year, wouldn’t it? There would be lots of photographs there! But don’t fret, friends, because there is hope!

Should You Use Lightroom Or Photoshop?

Should You Use Lightroom Or Photoshop?

"One question I get repeatedly when giving presentations to photographers is whether you should abandon Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or some other photo processing software in favor of Adobe Lightroom. The short answer is most definitely. Now let me tell you why.
Comparing Lightroom to Photoshop (or Elements) is really comparing apples to oranges. Photoshop was designed as a general purpose graphics application. It is used by designers, illustrators, scientists, publishers, digital artists, and photographers. Because of its widespread use, it caters to none of these groups, and includes a huge range of features and options that are usually daunting to a photographer wanting to process and edit his/her images. Now this is not to say that it is not useful and immensely powerful, and it probably does belong in the arsenal of any serious photographer. But I recommend Lightroom as the core application for your digital photography.
Lightroom was designed from the ground up with a single purpose – provide one application that functions as the modern digital darkroom. All of its features are targeted at the digital photographer, and as such provides a complete workflow from capture to print. And because Lightroom also works with psd, tiff, and jpeg files, you can work with all of your older images that may have been scanned or processed with another application.
My experience as an instructor is that the vast majority of photographers at all levels need to simplify their workflow, and focus more on the creative side of post processing. It should be fun and enjoyable, not frustrating and something to be approached with negativity. I think Lightroom helps in this regard, and allows you think like a photographer, not like an engineer."

Canon 6D Photos and Specs Leak: 20MP Sensor and a D600-esque Price Tag

Canon’s rumored entry-level full-frame DSLR, the 6D, is becoming more and more real. Digicam-info published a bunch of leaked specs and a couple of photos today. If the information is accurate, then Canon will soon have a DSLR that matches up well against Nikon’s new D600 in both price and specs.
The camera will reportedly feature a 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, the DIGIC5+ image processing engine, an ISO range of 100-25600 (expandable to 50-102400), a small body (the size of an APS-C sensor camera), a magnesium alloy built (some parts, at least), built-in Wi-Fi (wow), built-in GPS, 11 autofocus points, 4.5fps continuous shooting, a shutter rated for 100,000 actuations, 1/180 second sync, shutter speed that ranges from 30s to 1/4000s, weatherproofing, a 3-inch LCD screen, and 1080p HD video recording.

New Nikon D600 FX-Format DSLR. Pre-orders shipping 09/18/12. Please Pass on to members!

The New Nikon D600
Puts FX-format in focus for Photo enthusiasts.
Today's advanced amateurs and photo enthusiasts have been waiting with high expectations for a full-frame HD-SLR camera within their reach. For these customers, the wait is over. Nikon's smallest full-frame camera built today and optimized for versatility, the D600 is streamlined for compactness and value and is sure to fuel your customer's passion like never before. With its stunning full-frame images, 24.3MP CMOS sensor, cinema-quality 1080p videos, superior low-light performance, blazing fast burst rate, wireless photo sharing and much more, the D600 is sure to drive your most passionate customers into your stores to take this amazing new FX-format HD-SLR for a test drive.

High Basic Performance

The D600 comes equipped with a Multi-CAM 4800 autofocus sensor module. 39 focus points acquire and track the subjects precisely and the nine cross-type sensors cover the most frequently used center area to deliver higher subject-acquisition performance. Moreover, the seven focus points (five central focus points and one point to the left and right of them in the middle line) are compatible with f/8. Stress-free and smooth focusing is realized with the 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverter and precise focusing is possible even with the effective aperture value of f/8 by attaching a 2.0x teleconverter to telephoto lenses with maximum aperture of f/4. Comfortable AF shooting is realized for shooting wild birds or trains, for example, from a long distance at high magnification. AF area can be selected from single-point AF, dynamic-area AF (9 points, 21 points, 39 points), 3D-tracking and auto-area AF. Combined with the Scene Recognition System utilizing a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor that recognizes smaller subjects, the D600 shows higher subject-tracking and subject-identification performance. Furthermore, it is possible to choose an 11-point option by using custom settings. This is convenient for selecting a focus point quickly.

Compact, Lightweight, Durable Body

Inheriting an array of specifications and functions equivalent to those of the D4 and D800 series, the D600 realizes the smallest and lightest camera body among Nikon FX-format models. There has been a comprehensive improvement of many details, such as reducing the number of components by giving multiple functions to each one, reviewing the space efficiency of various parts, optimizing the design around the pentaprism and employing a smaller AF sensor module. All of these factors help achieve a compact and lightweight body with superior agility.
D600 Body: $2099.00 | D600 Kit: $2699.00

Wi-Fi™ Connectivity:
Send GREAT D600 images to a smartphone or tablet.

The Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter allows you to use your Android or iOS device (free app) for remote live view and shutter release. With the WU-1b you can send images wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet.  Price: $59.95

Kelby photowalk with Howard Siegel

Join Howard on a Photo Walk...

Q. What is a Photo Walk?

A. It’s a social photography event where photographers get together (usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town) to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers.

Q. When is the 5th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk?

A. This year’s Worldwide Photo Walk will take place on Saturday, October 13.

Meeting Location & Time

190 S Broad St, Milford, CT- United States
Date: Saturday, October 13, 2012
Time: 08:00am - 10:00am
Location Details: Gazebo on the Green
After the walk, meet at: Cafe Atlantique. Corner River St and Daniel St

Q. How do I sign up to participate in a Photo Walk?

A. Go to the Find A Walk page, and search for the location where you’d like to participate in a Photo Walk. Click on the Photo Walk you’d like to sign up for, and you should be taken to its location page. Once you’re here, you should see information about the leader and the walk, including a map showing the exact location. Just above this map will be a button that says “Join This Walk.” Just click that, follow the instructions, and you should be all set! If you don’t see any Photo Walks happening in your area, keep checking back. New ones are being added every day!

Q. Is there a fee to participate this year?

A. Once again it’s free there is no fee to join this year’s Photo Walk just come and have a ball!

Q. How many cities participated last year, and how many photographers did the Photo Walk that day?

A. We had over 1000 Photo Walks and over 28,000 people who participated around the world last year! That’s a HUGE leap from the 236 locations and 8,324 people we had the first year.

Q. What happens when a walk fills up?

A. It’s full =)

Q. How many is full?

A. Photo Walks are limited to 50 photographers. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, you haven’t seen 50 photographers coming down the sidewalk at the same time, and later all converging at once on a restaurant or pub. It’s more like a scary bike gang (except without the bikes, or gang, or scariness).

Q: Is there an age restriction? Are children allowed to participate?

A. While we do not have an age restriction, we thought it should be up to each walk leader to decide whether they want to allow children on their walk or not. Check with your leader to see if children will be allowed on their walk.

Q. So are you going to try and work some angle so that Orphanage in Kenya gets something out of this?

A. Ahh, you know us too well. Last year Scott was trying to come up with a good tie-in, but luckily one of his blog readers, Rob from Towner Jones Photography, came up with a great idea: we created an official Worldwide PhotoWalk T-shirt. We’re doing it again this year, and 100% of the profits from the sale of any of these t-shirts will go to feeding the kids at the Springs of Hope, Kenya Orphanage. We think it’s a great idea, and we’re so grateful that Rob came up with it! The online store will be up very soon!

Q. What are the rules for pictures I can submit to the contest?

A. We’ve had a ton of questions each year about this. Most recently, we’ve had lots of questions about model shoots during the walk. Here’s how we feel about it: you can shoot models as long as it happens on the walk route, during the official 2-hour (approx.) walk time chosen by your walk leader. Also, you can use Adobe Photoshop to your heart’s content, as long as everything in your photo was taken during the official walk hours along on the walk route. You can’t go back at sunset and shoot it in better light, and so on. Also, you can’t add a better sky that you shot in that same location on some other day. Basically, whatever you submit, it has to be taken during the official walk you participated in. You can shoot panos, HDR, B&Ws, you can create collages, you can process them with Instagram on your iPhone. I don’t care; it just has to be all shot during your 2-hour walk. If you don’t agree with the rules, no sweat whatsoever… just don’t enter the competition portion of the walk.

Q. Is there a Grand Prize?

A. You betcha!! Details of the prize packages can be found in our Prizes page (Top prize is awarded by Scott to the single best overall photo taken that day, from all the Photo Walk locations around the world).
