The place names are as familiar to New Englanders as the names of beloved family members: Otter Cliff, Cadillac Mountain, Boulder Beach. They stand for Maine, for rugged coastlines and the ancient pine forests that crawl right to their edges. And they make Acadia National Park one of the most beautiful places on earth. Join Mass Audubon’s John Galluzzo and photographer Greg Lessard on a photographer’s journey through the sunrises and sunsets of Acadia, along the Tarn Trail, to Jordan Pond, up the Shore Path and to Bass Harbor Lighthouse and Eagle Lake. We’ll focus on the natural beauty and the manmade additions to the landscape, catching them in just the right light throughout the weekend. While Greg will share his photographic knowledge, John will share insights about the natural world that we will be observing.

This trip is a fantastic opportunity to photograph some of the nation's most beautiful scenery. Acadia is a mystical land where mountains run into the sea. A long time playground for the nation's elite, Acadia has become one of our country's most treasured National Parks.

We will visit some of the park's most celebrated views and some lesser known secrets. The trip will include views from Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond and Ocean Drive. We will also explore Bass Harbor, a quaint Downeast fishing village.

"Kodak announced last year that it would retire Kodachrome, a brand name of color reversal film it had manufactured since 1935. McCurry, well-known for his 1984 photograph of Sharbat Gula, or the "Afghan Girl," published on the cover of National Geographic magazine, requested from Kodak to shoot the last roll of 36 frames it manufactured.

National Geographic has closely documented the journey of the final roll of Kodachrome manufactured, down to its being processed. Dwayne's is only photo lab left in the world to handle Kodachrome processing, so National Geographic Television producer Yvonne Russo and National Geographic magazine senior video producer Hans Weise found themselves in Parsons Monday, along with McCurry, with the final roll of the iconic film of the 20th century"

Russo said the National Geographic special covering the last roll of Kodachrome manufactured will likely air sometime in spring 2011.

Free Photo Walk at Bronz Zoo with Rick Sammon!

I am doing a photo walk/shoot at the Bronx Zoo on September 7th – the day before my first Croton Workshop. The plan is to meet at the Jungle World exhibit (inside the entrance) at 1 PM. We'll shoot there and then move onto a few of the other exhibits. I'll be happy to offer photo advice and share some of my favorite shooting spots.

We'll wrap up around 4 PM – but you can hang out as long as you like.

Bring your telephoto and wide-angle lenses – and your flash. You'll want to tell the whole story, which you can do by shooting with different lenses.

Simply show up! But if you want to shoot me an email – ricksammon@mac.com – in case plans change, that's cool.

A wedding photographer in Sicily was accidentally killed when he asked the prospective bride and groom to pose for a picture using hunting rifles as props - and one of them went off.

The blast hit 45-year-old Calogero Scimea in the head, and he died while the wedding party looked on in horror.

High school sweethearts Valentina Anitra, 22, and Ignazio Licodia, 25, immediately put their wedding on hold while police investigated.

In another sad twist, Scimea was filling in for another wedding photographer.

"He was only there as a favor for the wedding photographer who had originally been booked but had to pull out as he was ill," Col. Teo Luzi, a spokesman for the Palermo Police, said in published reports Tuesday.

Rifles are legal on the scenic Italian island that's known for - among other things - spawning the Mafia. It's also a tradition for guns to be fired off at family events and not unheard of for partygoers to get hurt.

But investigators are having a hard time getting the whole story out of Licodia's parents. They face possible criminal charges because the shooting happened at their house in Altofonte, just before the kids were to set off for a local church.

"What we are trying to establish is if the gun went off as it was being handled by the photographer, or if it went off as it was handed to him," said Luzi. "But no one is being very talkative."

Pepsico update

Thanks for the update Pat!

Hi Lisa. Thought you might want to let your readers know that the water lily pond at Pepsico is a real disappointment this year. All the flowers have some kind of mold or spots on them and, with the exception of the yellow ones, the plants are small and are not producing many flowers. Definitely not worth the trip.
