New Hahnemuhle Gallierie Wraps Make Canvas Easy

Inkjet-compatible canvas media looks its best when it's stretched over a framework, giving the print the appearance of a true painter's canvas. The problem: stretching canvas can be difficult and time-consuming (or expensive, if outsourced). To make canvas printing and mounting more accessible to photographers, Hahnemuhle introduces Gallerie Wraps. These new kits contain everything you need to easily produce a high quality fine art canvas presentation.

The Gallerie Wrap system is simple. In each pack, you receive a framework and two sheets of Hahnemuhle's Monet or Daguerre canvas. After printing your image, the pre-spaced framework is laid on the back of the canvas. A few basic folds and some quick cuts is all it takes to get an artistic look that can hang directly on a wall.

To see just how quick and easy it is, watch the brief video tutorial.

Gallerie Wraps come in 8.5 x 11" and 13 x 19" sizes in each of the following canvas types.

Daguerre Fine Art Canvas: High white brightness for fresh colors and exceptional contrast. 400gsm with a soft, honeycomb-structured surface.

Monet Fine Art Canvas: Neutral white color that is perfect for art reproduction. Traditional canvas texture, made of 100% cotton at a 410 gsm weight.

Try these to make a HDR (High Dynamic Range) image

From smashandpeas.com

HDR (High Dynamic Range) images have been around for a while, but have seen a surge in popularity in the last few years, due in part to the increased availability of HDR imaging software like Photomatix. These types of software go some way to taking the pain out of the creation process, by aligning and combining images, leaving the photographer to tweak various settings to achieve the desired result.

But before you start tweaking, you’ll need some images to play with: Series of images created from one image in Photoshop, final tone mapped HDR image at the end.

An Introduction to HDR
Images taken with most cameras today can only capture a limited range of brightness without under-exposing or over-exposing the image. HDR imaging looks to increase this range by combining the dynamic range (brightness values from shadows to highlights) from a series of images of the same scene into one HDR image. You’ll probably find that the best candidate for an HDR image will contain a large dynamic range ie shadows and highlights, and a scene with a similar spread of brightness i.e. all shadows, or all highlights, will tend not to work so well as an HDR image.

New birding platforms at Stone Harbor Point

Linda and I had a great weekend of birding here a few years ago. The platform is a nice addition.

New birding platforms at Stone Harbor Point

Stone Harbor, N.J., recently announced the completion of two viewing platforms that received approval by an esteemed guest, a Snowy Owl, to the south Jersey shore.

The platforms at Stone Harbor Point -- located about 15 miles north of Cape May -- were built with funds from a grant obtained from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (for which WildBird's Conservation Corner columnist, Peter Stangel, works). The NFWF grant also allowed for a stewardship program conducted by Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey; during nesting and shorebird stopover seasons, monitors will manage and conserve the area. New Jersey Audubon Society will help with educational signs at the platforms.

One last look at that beautiful owl on the new platform:

Easy Photoshop Technique to Make Your Pictures Pop!

Easy Photoshop Technique to Make Your Pictures Pop! by Darren Rowse. This tutorial with photoshop techniques for making your images ‘pop’ has been submitted by Elise Hennen from 28 Studios.

blur/overlay

1. Duplicate your picture layer by dragging the layer to the ‘new’ icon in the layers palette (ctrl+j).

2. Apply a gaussian blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…). Blur it enough that the detail disappears but the shapes mostly keep their form.

3. In the layers palette, change the blending mode from ‘Normal’ to ‘Overlay.’

4. If you look at the before and after, you can see that this method makes the light tones lighter and the dark tones darker while softening it a touch. Basically, it softly boosts the contrast. If you want a more dramatic effect, try changing the blending mode to ‘Vivid Light’ instead of ‘Overlay.’

Try it on all kinds of shots: portraits, nature shots, you name it. I use this method ALL the time. It works so well with everything!

Exposure Fusion: What is it? How does it Compare to HDR? How Do I Do It?

Exposure Fusion: What is it? How does it Compare to HDR? How Do I Do It?

Today Mark Evans from Smash and Peas Photography Blog shares an explanation and starting points with Exposure Fusion.

Lets set things straight from the start, Exposure Fusion is not a kind of HDR. Exposure Fusion is a fairly new concept that is the process of creating a low dynamic range (LDR) image from a series of bracketed exposures.

In short, EF takes the best bits from each image in the sequence and seamlessly combines them to create a final ‘Fused’ image. Or more technically, the fusing process assigns weights to the pixels of each image in the sequence according to luminosity, saturation and contrast, then depending on these weights includes or excludes them from the final image. And because Exposure Fusion relies on these qualities, no exif data is required, and indeed, if you wanted to, you could include an image with flash to bring darker areas to life.

Using this process actually has a few advantages over HDR.

ebook about Macro photography

Scott just had a friend of mine contact him about an eBook he put together about Macro photography. It's really good!

He produced this eBook after receiving a lot of questions from his subscribers about this topic.

Roy Barker is well known in our market and knows a thing or two about photography. I've read through the eBook and it's filled with useful information you can use immediately.

I think you know by now, I don't promote other peoples products unless I reviewed it and see a lot of value in it. This is a no brainer if you want to learn more about Macro photography.

Roy's giving a special link for our subscribers to get a special discount. He's selling this to the public for $25, but he's giving it to us for only $18. So, if your interested in Macro photography and you would like to learn more about this style of photography...Check it out Here

Here's a few tips Roy wrote that should help you regardless if you get his eBook or not.

Macro Photography Equipment Tips
What is macro photography? Macro photography is the art of taking close-ups of small things and the subjects tend to become larger than life. It is the opposite of micro photography and often the subjects are things like a water droplet on the petal of a flower or a line of ladybirds as they go about their daily business.

What Camera to use for Macro Photography
You can get great results with just an ordinary point and shoot digital camera, but the serious macro photographer will want a single-lens reflex camera. You can attach special-purpose macro lenses and the viewfinder shows you what the end result will be on the sensor.

What is a Macro Lens?
It is easier to find a good quality single focus lens for macro photography than it is to find a good quality telephoto zoom lens. The best types of macro lenses have a ranging length of between 50 mm and 200 mm, and will focus continuously from infinity to 1:1. A macro lens helical has floating elements to change the optical design to give good quality results in close-up macro photography. This is why you get beautiful, sharp images that are focused at all distances in macro photography photos. So how do you choose a lens for macro photography? The same way you would choose a telephoto lens. You choose a macro lens to suit the purpose you want to use it for. For example, you may want to photograph that incredible butterfly perched on the edge of a pale pink rose petal early in the morning so you will need a 200 mm lens if you are going to capture it before it flies away. If your purpose is to compress the facial features of your subject then you will probably use a 105 mm lens over a short wide angle one.

Macro Photography Lighting
A hand held flash is handy for lighting your subjects and is powerful when used a few inches from the subject. Try using it on one side of the subject while someone holds up a white piece of paper on the other side as a reflector. This will give a harsh, stark effect. For softer light, experiment with other material to diffuse the light from the flash, for example, colored gels. If you have a fascination for capturing close-ups of small things then get out and experiment with different techniques for taking macro photographs, and see what amazing results you can get. Filters (all, but especially Graduated Neutral Density Filters)

This post is dedicated to James Santerre. I have the privilege of being in an exhibition with Jim (and some other wonderful photographers) right now at Cafe George on 300 George St in New Haven. I photographed with Jim recently on a CAP trip in DelMarVa and I was very impressed that even in frigid conditions he took out his split graduated neutral density filter. My Singh-Ray was in my camera bag, but I was too cold to bring it out (I was afraid that I would drop the expensive but amazing filter). I actually took a photo of Jim using the filter because I was impressed that amongst ALL of the great CAP photographers on this trip he was the ONLY one using one! (I also admit that even in good weather sometimes I get too lazy to take it out.)

Well, you MUST go see the exhibit at Cafe George because after you see Jim's photographs that are on display (mainly taken right here in Connecticut) you will either google right over to Singh-Ray OR if you already own a split graduated neutral density filter you will be inspired to take it out of your camera bag on your next trip! Jim has a great eye, which make his compositions sing, but his use of the split graduated neutral density filter really makes his photographs pop and sing! Kudos to Jim!

Perhaps we can entice Jim to do a workshop for us -- he could show us some "with" and "without" split graduated neutral density filter images and then discuss how and when he used them.

In defense of my admittance that my split graduated neutral density filter often stays in my camera bag I do use other Singh-Ray filters quite often and my Moose warming polarizer is on my camera lens 75% of the time. My favorite two Singh-Ray filters are the vari-ND filter. This is an AWESOME filter for photographing streams and waterfalls!! http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html. I see now they also have a Vari-N-Duo adds our LB Warming Polarizer to the Vari-ND -- both in one versatile filter http://www.singh-ray.com/varinduo.html. That will certainly go on my wish list. You can download the signh-ray brochure here: http://www.singh-ray.com/brochure.html

Filters are one of the more useful items in a photographers bag of tricks. Although, not only useful, they also give a photographer that creative edge when attempting something original. There is a vast array of filters to fit any lens, and of course almost any purpose, but only a few stand out as must haves for most photographers. Read the rest of the article here: http://www.smashandpeas.com/filters/

Polarisers, Neutral density, and Graduated Neutral Density filters can be an extremely useful addition to any photographers kit, but unless you know what you’re doing, and know when and where to use them, you may end up with more duff shots than you thought.

Graduated Neutral Density filters are the Landscape Photographers best friend. Great for balancing exposure of the sky with the land, these bits of glass or plastic are indispensable, although when you’re first starting to use them, they can be a little tricky. First of all you’ll probably need a set of ND grads, I have a set of Hitec ND grads with soft graduations, which come in 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 strengths, but you can also get hard graduations which basically graduate from clear to dark over a smaller area. Now when it comes to using them, you need to know what the difference in brightness between the sky and the foreground is, so that you can select the correct one to use and hence balance the exposure of the sky with the foreground. So for a 1 stop difference, you would use the 0.3 and for a 2 stop difference, use the 0.6, etc. To get the difference, you need to get the exposure for the sky, so point your camera at the sky (without the filter mounted). Lets say your camera is on Aperture Priority mode, set to f/16 and it gives you a shutter speed of 1/250s. You then point your camera at the foreground of your scene, and it gives you a shutter speed of 1/60s. From these settings, you can now see that the difference is 2 stops (1 stop from 1/250 to 1/125 and 1 stop from 1/125 to 1/60)and therefore you should use the 0.6 filter. All that is left is to compose the shot, align the filter so the graduation is in line with the horizon (dark part over the sky!) and take your picture. In tricky situations the use of a hand held light meter, such a Sekonic, might be needed but with a bit of experience you may even be able to guestimate which filter to use in most situations.

PhotoFreebies for Windows (plugins)

NEW: Version 2 of PhotoFreebies for Windows (including a 64bit version) is available!

PhotoFreebies is a collection of free plugins for performing useful photo manipulations and effects e.g. sepia effects, saturation gradients, b/w conversion, color space transformations and many more. Some of them have a dialog with adjustable controls whereas others are applied instantly without displaying a dialog.

PhotoFreebies works in dozens of graphics applications including Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop Elements, PhotoPlus, Photo-Paint, IrfanView and PhotoImpact under Windows and MacOS X. The plugins also run natively in Photoshop CS3/CS4 on Intel-Macs. There is also a 64bit version for the 64bit version of Photoshop CS4 for Windows. The Windows version supports 8bit and 16bit RGB images whereas the Mac version only supports 8bit RGB images. Additionally the Mac version does not contain the RGB2HSL, HSL2RGB and Color Blind plugins.
To celebrate the success of our PhotoWiz product series we decided to publish the free PhotoFreebies. Our intention was to create small and easy-to-use utilities for image manipulation. They are not as feature-rich as our other PhotoWiz products, which were engineered for special photo correction tasks. The PhotoFreebies produce more general effects that are needed from time to time and are only inconveniently reproducible in common graphics tools. The PhotoFreebies also include effects which are less suitable for commercial products, but nevertheless useful. Additionally you will also find some features of our other PhotoWiz products in a more simplified form in the PhotoFreebies collection. The PhotoFreebies collection will of course be expanded with even more useful plugins in future.

Plugins Descriptions:
B/W: Offers seven methods for removing the color from images and achieving a grayscaled look.
Color Blind (Windows only): Simulates red/green color blindness. It can also be used for special effects.
Chroma Negative: Inverts the colors without making the image a negative. Has a dialog with a blend slider.
Desaturation Gradient: Gradually desaturates the image in four possible directions.
Histo Fix: It fixes a chopped histogram by interpolating lost image information. You can regain 1/2 bit, 1 bit or 2 bit of image information. Works only on 8bit images, because 16bit images do not have this problem.
Luma Negative: Turns the image into a negative without changing the colors. Has a dialog with a blend slider.
RGB2HSL and HSL2RGB (Windows only): The RGB2HSL plugin converts the RGB channels into HSL channels without leaving RGB mode. This allows you to manipulate the HSL channels. The Hue component occupies the R channel, the Saturation component is in the G channel and the Lightness is placed in the B channel. The other plugin converts the HSL channels back to RGB. No Dialog.
RGB2YCC and YCC2RGB: The RGB2YCC plugin converts the RGB channels into YCC channels without leaving RGB mode. This allows you to manipulate the YCC channels. The Y-Luminosity component occupies the R channel and the two Chroma components are in the G and B channels. The other plugin converts the YCC channels back to RGB. No Dialog.
Remove Transparency: Makes a transparent layer fully opaque. No Dialog.
Sepia: Lets you apply uniform or colored sepia effects. Includes three controls. A sepia effect of this quality isn't that easy to achieve in Photoshop or PSP.

With which graphics applications can the PhotoFreebies be used? See the Compatibility List.
What's new in the latest version? See the Version History.
Not sure which Mac version to use? See the Mac Version Selection Chart.

Adobe Releases Photoshop Plug-in To Disable Gestures for MacBook Pro Owners

From SCOTT KELBY
'Today I am the happiest camper in the forest, because Adobe has made me love my Apple MacBook Pro laptop again. They released a free downloadable plug-in for Photoshop CS4 which disables the trackpad gestures on Apple’s new MacBook Pro Laptops. No longer does my canvas rotate 40 or 50 times a day when I least expect it, and my document doesn’t zoom out to a 1% view 30 or so times a day.
No longer do I spontaneously string together groups of colorful adjectives, spoken at a high volume, as my blood pressure attains new heights. No today, there is nothing but love for Adobe, and now for my MacBook Pro as well. It’s a good day.
If you have been experiencing similar trackpad issues (which caused you to temporarily take on the vocabulary of Joe Pechi in the movie Casino),
here’s the link to download the plug-in. Thank you Adobe. You had me at “disable.”

Carl Heilman photo workshops

A taste of springtime came and went over the weekend - but that means there is still some great winter photography left here in the Adirondacks! Still 2 feet of snow here and it's going down below zero again tonight...

We had a real good weekend of winter workshops about 10 days ago now, but they got us thinking of how best to change our offerings so the classes would best fit individual needs. As our workshops have gone from an emphasis on film to digital, the amount of discussion has lengthened considerably. Digital photography has opened up so many options - and questions.
Instead of informal discussion we now have a more formal outline to follow so we can cover the most important issues that people are interested in. There is also time enough for Q & A, and we have added a short critique session into our day long workshop.

The result is the workshop has become a lot different than the original intent. So, we have decided to rename our one day photo workshop to a Comprehensive One Day Photo Workshop. This now includes about 3 hours or so of instruction, discussion, and critique. The rest of the 8 hour day is spent with a camera.

For those who are comfortable with a camera, we are now offering Photo Tours which are 8 - 10 hour days in the field. During the day I will be available for questions and will spend individual time with participants, but there will be minimal group discussion.

We are also offering Advanced One Day Workshops that will address specific topics, such as a Wide Angle / Panoramic / Depth of Field Workshops, or Creative Techniques Workshops, etc.
I still need to revise the original descriptions for the day long workshops, and have numerous pages to add for the new listings. It will take some time, but I'll try to keep chipping away at it here!

Since I have revised the whole format, I have also put up a page for photos taken by workshop particpants. I have a small start with a few images that have been sent over time, but would really enjoy being able to add more of the great photos I've seen taken in the workshops over the years. No need to write a quote - but if you have some thoughts you would like to add, please pass them along as well. If you add website information for any personal or commercial photo galleries you might have, I'd be happy to link to them as well from the photo acknowledgement. Images only need to be 300 pixels on the longest side - or we can size them down and put a copyright on for you. Looking forward to adding some great images to the site!!!

Check out the new and revised listings at http://www.carlheilman.com/photo-workshops.html .
Please contact us with any questions!

Best wishes,

Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts

Photoshop > Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard Shortcuts are keystrokes used to quickly invoke a command. As well, shortcuts usually (but not always) involve a modifier key such as Ctrl/Cmd, Alt/Opt, or Shift. For example, instead of choosing Select » Deselect from the menus, you could simply press Ctrl/Cmd+D.

Keyboard shortcuts can improve your efficiency, and in some cases, they can even invoke commands that might not otherwise be available (e.g., zooming while a dialog box is open, or inserting a Select forward layer command into an action).

One of Photoshop's strengths is that it makes extensive use of keyboard shortcuts; but, there are so many that it's difficult to remember them all. So, I've created a "cheat sheet" that's organized by menu, as well as alphabetically by key.

These "cheat sheets" are available in the following flavours:
Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS3
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Adobe Photoshop CS
Adobe Photoshop 7
Adobe Photoshop 6
Adobe Photoshop 5
Adobe Bridge & Adobe Camera Raw

Note: In order to save the PDF files below, you may need to right-click (Ctrl-click on the Mac) and select "Save Target As". Also, you'll need to install Adobe Reader in order to open the PDF files.

Refocus Imaging's technology -- change the focus AFTER the shutter is released

It's one of the oldest, most common problems in photography: that picture you thought would be the prize shot is out of focus.

Refocus Imaging, a Silicon Valley start-up, thinks its technology can be used to make cameras that can fix that problem--after you take the photo.

By fitting a camera's image sensor with a special lens and then processing the resulting data with new methods, Refocus Imaging's technology will let photographers fix their photos and exercise new creative control after the shutter is released, founder and Chief Executive Ren Ng said.

Hailed by Town & Country as "the great wedding photographer of our day" and by Oprah Winfrey as "the best in the business," Denis Reggie and his impact on wedding photography have become legend. Sensing the frustration of many brides with the posed look of traditional and pseudo-fashion wedding photography, he set out to refine and popularize the truly natural, editorial style he termed "wedding photojournalism." The wedding photography industry has never been the same.

In the 2007 American PHOTO cover feature naming "The 10 Best Wedding Photographers in the World," Denis Reggie was listed first. At the request of the Smithsonian Institute, several Reggie photographs will become part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History in Washington.

His images have been featured on the cover of LIFE, and named in "Photographs of the Year" by People, Life, Time and Newsweek among other publications. He has be interviewed at various times as a guest on NBC's Today show as well as on Oprah! A Denis Reggie photograph of Oprah Winfrey and Jackie Onassis was featured on a broadcast highlighting "Oprah's favorite things.
Denis Reggie's celebrity client list reads like a Who's Who among America's elite and includes Vera Wang, John Kennedy, Jr., Susan Lucci, James Taylor, Mariah Carey, Rudy Giuliani, Peter Jennings, James Garner, television anchor Campbell Brown, Alan Greenspan, Ted Turner and Don Henley to name a few.

He has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, VH-1, E! Entertainment Television, CNN and Fox in national broadcasts. He has also been the subject of feature stories in each of the major wedding and photography magazines and in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and numerous other publications. His photographs are frequently used in books on weddings, etiquette and photography including titles by Vera Wang, Letitia Baldridge and Town & Country.
Denis Reggie was the first wedding photographer named Explorer of Light by Canon and was named by Microsoft as its first Icon of Imaging.

How to photograph waterfalls

One of the most common questions that I’m asked is ‘how do I photograph waterfalls?’
Waterfalls do present themselves as a wonderful and challenging subject matter to photographers. Firstly they’re beautiful places, secondly they are often in tricky lighting situation and thirdly they’re a dynamic subject as they’re moving (and of course movement means a challenge but also a real opportunity for a more dynamic shot).

A lot has been written about the finer points of photographing waterfalls but the basics are fairly simple.

Read Waterfall Digital Photography by Darren Rowse Here http://digital-photography-school.com/waterfall-digital-photography
