Create Compelling Photos and Videos with Groundbreaking Features
Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9 feature all the tools users need to make the most of their photos and videos. Adapted from Photoshop CS5’s celebrated Content Aware Fill feature, the content intelligence in the Spot Healing Brush analyzes what’s in the image and quickly de-clutters or repairs photos (like removing tourists from a crowded scene) with a swipe of a brush, magically filling in the background. Several new Guided Edit options walk users step-by-step through the process of achieving cool editing effects such as Out of Bounds, making an element of a photo appear to leap off the page in 3D, creating pop art masterpieces, or retouching made easy via the perfect portraits feature.
With Premiere Elements 9, users can create movies in just minutes with the help of intelligent tools that automatically fix audio problems, trim away bad footage, stabilize shaky shots and correct bad color and lighting problems. Any video can simply be turned into an animated film with Cartoon Effects, and optimized performance makes editing and viewing smooth, even in HD.
Improved Organization and Sharing
With Premiere Elements, it is easier than ever to upload and import from popular Flip Video camcorders and DSLR cameras. The Organizer allows users to tag and view photos and videos in one central place. The Auto-Analyzer helps users tag the best photos and videos and also identifies specific faces in photos. Close up and Garden Workshop
This is a reminder about a great Close up and Garden Workshop that is coming fast and furious as soon as I return to NJ.
Please contact me through email for a reservation form and I will touch base with you on October 11 to confirm your seat in the workshop. Have a look at the description and put any questions that you might have in the registration request email.
This is the first time I am working with these guys and so far they have been really great and are looking forward to us coming. If you have never been there, you need to check it out....if not during the workshop, at some other time. It is really amazing and will offer so many shooting opportunities in a wonderful fall setting. The lecture will happen on Oct 15 and will be indoors so it is rain or shine. The full day shoot is the next day unless it rains and then we will shoot on October 23. We will have the entire place to work however you want with tripods or without. I will give you lots of close up tips in the lecture and will be assisted during our shoot day by a couple of people from my team so there will be lots of time for attention.

The New Haven Camera Club is hosting a “Judging Symposium” on Saturday, November 6, at the United Methodist Church, 811 East Main Street, Branford, CT, from 9A.M. to 12 noon. Note: This is a different location from where the club normally meets. Directions are included at the bottom.
Why are we doing this? Camera clubs depend on good judges to critique the work of their members. These days, clubs are finding it harder to get good qualified people who are willing to go out and serve as judges. We thought that perhaps bringing a number of interested people together to discuss the issue of camera club judging would be beneficial to all. Even less experienced photographers, not readyto become judges, may benefit from this symposium.
Paul Peterson will begin the morning with his updated program “Judging Photography In The Digital Age.” After the program, we will engage in a free-flowing discussion in which the participants are invited to share their ideas for improving the quality and number of camera club judges in our area.
Here are some of the questions we may try to answer:
There is no charge for the symposium.
We hope to see you there to share ideas and learn what others are thinking.
Light refreshments will be served.

Okay, I know that I should take this as a compliment. But unless the bride and groom are going to wallow through a swamp on all fours, count me out. Brides and their mothers scare me more than coming face-to-face with a mother bear and her cubs while hiking.

Hmmmmmm. Tough one. Could it be that the miniscule image sensor and cheap piece of plastic they call a lens can’t quite compete with quality glass and the resolving power of the sensors in modern digital SLR cameras?

Fall is in the air and that means the PDN PhotoPlus Expo is just around the corner. For the third year in a row, MMW and B&H are partnering to bring portfolio review sessions with Workshops faculty to the B&H Event Space - just two blocks from the Expo at the Javits Center.
Workshops master faculty are generously giving their time to meet one-on-one with photographers for 20-minute review sessions Thursday, October 28 from 1 - 3PM, and Friday, October 29 from 10AM - Noon. Thursday reviewers include Sean Kernan, Arlene Collins, Peter Turnley, Jill Enfield, Jim Megargee, Karen Marshall and John Isaac, while Friday reviewers are George Schaub, Sue Bloom, Keith Johnson, Elizabeth Greenberg, Anne Day, Sean Harris, and Jean Miele.
To register for this free event, visit the B&H Event Space website by October 14 and sign up for a two-hour review time frame of your choice. Once you have registered, you will receive an email from the Workshops with the name of your reviewer and your 20-minute timeslot for that hour. On the day of your review, please bring a current print or digital portfolio of your work. If you bring a CD of images, you must also have a laptop to display your work. Experience and photograph the steam locomotives at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in what may be as close to operational service as they will ever look again! We will have smoke devices as well as props and actors in order to recreate scenes from the 1940-1950's. All of the lights in the museum will be turned off, leaving only our lights on for photography.
The NCTM is roughly three hours from Roanoke, VA so for those of you who are participating in the Roanoke night session, this will be a nice addition for photography opportunities.

Monday morning is art class for everyone, and always a favorite part of the week. Each student makes their own photographic mixed media collage using paints, glues, wire, found objects, printed photographs, clippings, the desires of the heart. Then, enjoy a one of a kind experience making hand printed Van Dyke sepia prints via a gorgeous Victorian process using silver coating, handmade paper, UV light, and water. Achieve the original vintage process look, no photoshop required.
Late Monday morning is a breathy, ethereal studio session where students make their own lens filters and photograph through many interesting foregrounds to create beguiling, romantic images. Monday Evening we will photograph the three sirens; three beautiful women draped in white gauzy gowns in gorgeous natural landscape.
Tuesday morning, Jenn will share her Photoshop tips to digital antique process and digital collage, and many other tips and tricks she has learned and loves to share. The workshop will end with new thoughts and inspirations to send everyone on a new path of discovery and invention. Come relax with us in this magical little town, make new friends, new discoveries, and find new heartlights.

Enjoy elaborately themed photographic sessions with beautifully costumed models and exquisite locations, hands on photography and demonstrations of avant garde lighting, posing, and costuming techniques, as well as discussions of thought process and exciting methods of arriving at interesting expressions, body language, posing, illustrations, and compositions.
Sunday begins with a discussion of muses and inspirations, followed by an exquisite session of a model in a shallow water tank, dressed in sheer antique gowns and adorned in tree limbs, flowers, and feathers. The afternoon brings the Marie Antoinette inspired Couture Session, where two models will be adorned in modern gothic French fashion and draped in fabric, photographed on location using exciting, unusual posing methods to create a high fashion, circus-couture look.
Evenings are a treat, as we all gather at a local restaurant for a family style dinner and round table discussion, and later in the hospitality room for beverages, art films and portfolio review.
Monday morning is art class for everyone, and always a favorite part of the week. Each student makes their own photographic mixed media collage using paints, glues, wire, found objects, printed photographs, clippings, the desires of the heart. Then, enjoy a one of a kind experience making hand printed Van Dyke sepia prints via a gorgeous Victorian process using silver coating, handmade paper, UV light, and water. Achieve the original vintage process look, no photoshop required.
Late Monday morning is a breathy, ethereal studio session where students make their own lens filters and photograph through many interesting foregrounds to create beguiling, romantic images. Monday Evening we will photograph the three sirens; three beautiful women draped in white gauzy gowns in gorgeous natural landscape.
Tuesday morning, Jenn will share her Photoshop tips to digital antique process and digital collage, and many other tips and tricks she has learned and loves to share. The workshop will end with new thoughts and inspirations to send everyone on a new path of discovery and invention. Come relax with us in this magical little town, make new friends, new discoveries, and find new heartlights.

Photographers who enjoy capturing images of the Georgia and South Carolina Coast flora, fauna and scenery (as well as photographing people enjoying all those delights!) are invited to enter the 2010 WISE and Sierra Club 2010 Photo Contest.
Keep in mind all seasons of the year. 18 photos in Junior (under 19) and Senior (19 and up) will be selected as winners, as well as a Grand Prize winner. We are seeking photos that represent the Coastal life in nature: animals, flowers and people in their works, presence and lives.
Rules
1) All photos must depict an aspect of the Natural in Coastal Georgia and South Carolina, taken within the past two years.
2) Professional and amateur nature photographers are eligible to enter.
3) Entrants may only submit their own original photographs No more than three (3) photos per entrant.
4) For photos showing people, entrants should have permission from the subject or the subject’s parent or guardian if the subject is under 18 years old, and be able to provide written documentation upon request.
5) All entries must be prints no more than 19 inches in the long dimension (inside the mat) for the Senior class, or 17 inches (inside the mat) for the Junior class. Photos can also be posted on foam board. Digital files should be available upon request. Photos must not be framed.
6) On an index card or paper, type or print the following information and attach with tape to the back of each photo (please do not write directly on the back of the photo or use staples or paper clips, as this will damage the photo):
Entrant name, address
Telephone number and/or email address
Photo title, where the photo was taken and information relating to the subject matter
Month and year photo was taken
Camera and exposure information

The Outer Banks workshop
The Outer Banks are a long, thin strip of barrier islands that protect the North Carolina Coast. Preserved to a large extent by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, it is a visual feast of historic lighthouses spaced between long stretches of wild beaches and pristine sand dunes. The Outer Banks are part of our own back yard that we know so well, and we will go to great and little-known locations where you can make wonderful photographs.
With a maximum 6:1 student/instructor ratio, everyone gets lots of daily individual attention, in both the field and classroom.

Belize has just about everything: jungles, beaches, wildlife, mountains, caves, waterfalls, and ancient Maya ruins. This trip has everything too! Over the course of a week, we'll take you on a photographic adventure of a lifetime as you get to see and photograph Belize as few tourists ever could.
In Belize, the main language is English, with a diverse mixture of culture and familiar Caribbean hospitality. On this trip, you can expect some early starts, with photography lessons making the best of the light at dawn and dusk. Normally, two to three hours are available for lunch, giving you time to relax or to choose other activities organized by your guides.
This trip has been designed to give you a taste of everything Belize has to offer. Your Belize Adventure begins in San Ignacio, with panoramic views of the Cayo district and into the wilds of Guatemala. Then we head southward, down the Hummingbird Highway to the Toledo district. Here we'll travel to enchanting remote Maya villages on the border with Guatemala and be guided deep into the jungle with local wildlife experts. Other highlights are Mayan ruins and ancient temples, Mayan mountain landscapes, rainforest scenics, waterfalls, an organic cacao farm (chocolate), a butterfly farm, Placencia (a small, Caribbean calypso coastal town), plus other surprises.
General Information
The tuition of $1950 includes airport shuttles (Belize City), all transportation within the country during the workshop, lodging for the entire week (double occupancy), all meals, entrance fees to all sites, professional guides and photography instruction. Additional expenses that you might incur includes a single room supplement ($300), medical insurance, alcohol, and gratuities.
There is some very light hiking required for some locations and the maximum group size for this workshop is 8. The host and sponsor of this trip is the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), a leader in the adventure travel business for over 30 years. They were described as "one of the best outfitters on Earth" by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

Now that Labor Day weekend has past, fall colors are just around the corner! Colors are already starting on isolated trees, and in the wetlands throughout the Adirondacks.
While most of my fall workshops have filled, there are still spaces for the 4 day High Peaks workshop / tour, during the peak of color in that area, as well as the Wild Center workshop, and our 'all about digital' weekend workshop.
We also just changed our Full moon / fall colors around Lake George photo tour from a 'moderate' tour to 'easy'. All locations will be close to the road so there will be minimal hiking involved. Since we just made the change we will hold the 'early bird' rate of $165. until 30 days before the tour on Oct. 23. There are links to all of the workshops and tours on our website at

The pictures we create today for people may be the only things some people have left
I came across this article recently and I have posted about this topic before -- see "A reminder not to wait for the perfect time", below, but I came across this and just had to share it with everyone. Lisa
Recently, I photographed a family that has a 3 yr old with a rare form of kidney cancer. Never having had a family portrait, these would most likely be their only family portraits with Lydia.
We had good weather the day of their session. Lydia and her 1 year old sister were just as busy as any one and three year old getting photographed. We enjoyed our time together, capturing as many moments as we could before the girls gave out...even got Dad to crack a grin (he didn't smile for his own wedding photos I was was told). I posted the proofing slideshow to Facebook for them to share with their friends and family afterward. It was tough not letting the emotional aspect override my brain throughout all of this.
Lydia took a turn for the worse about as week after their prints were delivered. Fluid is building up from the cysts that the tumors create. Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh can do no more for her but keep her comfortable and as pain free as they can with the help of Hospice. They figure she has maybe 2 weeks...

A reminder not to wait for the perfect time!
I read a wonderful article on another photographer's blog -- wow! I just had to post it to remind everyone of the importance of family photographs -- do not wait for the perfect time for photos.
it’s so easy to say
–I’m too fat.
I have too much going on.
we’re too busy.
maybe next year.
but I just want to say STOP IT!
We need to take the time to appreciate the value of family photos, if not for ourselves (because we’re too fat or whatever), then for our children. In 20 years, your children are not going to say, I really love this photo of my family but I wish my mom had waited until she lost some weight.
Please just get a family portrait done because these photographs are so important to those who love you!

We never know what tomorrow will bring our way. And life is quickly racing by; before we know it, our kids will be grown and leaving the house.

Stephanie Cunningham got her start in photography at the age of 9 when she recieved her first camera. This continued throughout school and she could always be found with a camera in hand. Her education includes completing a 3 year course in Commercial Art and Design from Erie County AVTS and pursuing Photography/Multimedia at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She is a member of Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographer Society of New York, Southwestern New York Association of Professional Photographers and National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Stephanie is a PPA Certified Professional Photographer. She is also serving as 2010 President of SNAPP.

Stephanie Cunningham got her start in photography at the age of 9 when she recieved her first camera. This continued throughout school and she could always be found with a camera in hand. Her education includes completing a 3 year course in Commercial Art and Design from Erie County AVTS and pursuing Photography/Multimedia at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. A start in portraiture began at Kinderfoto and continued with Sonney's Photography, American Studios, Olan Mills Studios and JC Penney Portraits. Continued training includes participating in workshops hosted by such photographers as Clay Blackmore with Jane Conner-ziser, Beth Forester, Michael Barton, John Metcalfe, Paul Rogers, Michael Redford, Will Crockett and Doug Gordon. She is a member of Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographer Society of New York, Southwestern New York Association of Professional Photographers and National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Stephanie is a PPA Certified Professional Photographer. She is also serving as 2010 President of SNAPP.

As autumn arrives and birders begin to follow hawk migrations throughout the state, we welcome Julie Victoria, a wildlife bio- logist with 32 years of experience at the Connecticut DEP. She’ll discuss the efforts of the DEP’s Wildlife Diversity Program in tracking the American Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Osprey, and American Kestrel. Julie will give a brief life history of these birds in CT, using a colorful PowerPoint presentation of bird photographs. The history of these species will show their rise from near extinction, and in the case of the eagle and peregrine will demonstrate the current boom in successful breeding that has allowed the two species to be taken off the federal list of endangered species. Similarly, successful breeding has allowed the Osprey to be removed from the CT state list.
