Sandisk 128GB 100MB CompactFlash CardSandisk is now shipping the ultra-fast, ultra-high capacity 128GB 100 MB/s (about 600x)—that’s not a typo, it’s really 128 Gigabytes, bigger than many laptop hard drives were just a couple years ago. You can get it from B&H for $1199. If that is too rich for your blood then our new favorite value champion is the Transcend 16GB 600x CompactFlash Extreme Plus UDMA Card—available from B&H for $79.95. We have one and it benchmarks faster than our 400x cards and is only $20 more. A small price to pay if it gets you the final shot in an amazing action sequence.

BlueSLR turns your iPhone, iPad into camera remote

"BlueSLR is actually a tag-team product comprised of a Bluetooth attachment for your DSLR and an iOS app that runs the show. Plug the attachment—about the size of two USB flash drives—into your compatible camera, install the free app on your iOS device, and you can then control your camera’s shutter, focus, speed, and time with your iPhone or iPad—supposedly, from up to 300 feet away, depending on your iOS device." Note that at this time it is only available for Nikon cameras, they say that the Canon models will be coming soon.

Workshop Bald Eagles + Wood Ducks, May 18-22, 2011

Ken Archer and Nate Chappell are leading a workshop to some of our favorite local areas in Western Washington. Our main subjects will be the numerous Bald Eagles and other species at Hood Canal. In the afternoons and evenings we will photograph Wood Ducks at a local park as well as some Northwest songbirds at feeder setups as well as do photo critique. Every spring the low tides at Hood Canal attract large numbers of Bald Eagles which come to feed on spawning sculpin. It's a great place to get close up flight shots of these birds in a totally natural situation (non-baited). Nate Chappell will be teaching how to handhold a large lens for flight photography, manual exposure techniques, fill flash and much more. The first night we will have a 2-3 hour presentation with question and answer period. Ken Archer is a former first place category winner in Nature's Best Photo Contests and Wyoming Wildlife Photography Contest.

The cost of the workshop is $1,595 and includes all lodging, transportation, guiding, instruction and property use fees. We currently have 2 spots left open out of 6.

To see the details please see http://www.trogontours.net/eagles. To see my eagle gallery from Hood Canal go to http://www.trogontours.net/eaglegallery To see my gallery of Wood Ducks and other species from Lakewood, WA please see http://www.trogontours.net/washingtongallery2

Sat Mar19, biggest Moon Rise since 1993!!

COOL NASA EXPLANATION OF THE SPECIAL FULL MOON ON YOU TUBE

March 16, 2011: Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years.

"The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look."
Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee): diagram. Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.

Above: Perigee moons are as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons. [video] "The full Moon of March 19th occurs less than one hour away from perigee--a near-perfect coincidence1 that happens only 18 years or so," adds Chester.

The Moon looks extra-big when it is beaming through foreground objects--a.k.a. "the Moon illusion."

Okay, the Moon is 14% bigger than usual, but can you really tell the difference? It's tricky. There are no rulers floating in the sky to measure lunar diameters. Hanging high overhead with no reference points to provide a sense of scale, one full Moon can seem much like any other.

The best time to look is when the Moon is near the horizon. That is when illusion mixes with reality to produce a truly stunning view. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects.

On March 19th, why not let the "Moon illusion" amplify a full Moon that's extra-big to begin with? The swollen orb rising in the east at sunset may seem so nearby, you can almost reach out and touch it.

"My general approach for an all day seminar is to present two shows: The day is kicked off with a Nature and Wildlife show. A second show is presented during the afternoon session, featuring Travel destinations. Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. The program is entitled "Through the Lens of Adam Jones." During the Nature program I discuss strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images."

Morning: Nature and Wildlife Show (This program highlights strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images)

Afternoon: Travel Show (This program highlights travel from 9 different countries and demonstrates techniques and strategies for great travel images.)

Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. At least three of the following four programs will also be presented.

1. Taking Control: Covers Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, and Focus; Where to be in control of these variables, and how to use them creatively using side by side image comparisons.

2. Lighting & Composition: Centers on developing your awareness of natural light and learning to use the elements of design to create award winning compositions. Flash will also be discussed.

3. Extending the Limits: Focuses on photo realistic HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging; Helicon Focus software for unlimited depth of field; Expo Disc for correct white balance in the field; and the use DXO Optics pro for batch converting raw images.

4. Photoshop: Demonstrates Adam’s workflow through Adobe Camera Raw and DXO Optics Pro using raw images. Also includes demo stitching panoramic images, and unlimited depth of field via Helicon Focus.

"A Day in the Field with Adam Jones"

Adam Jones will be presenting "Through the Lens of Adam Jones" at the Holiday Inn in North Haven on April 9th as part of the NHCC centennial celebration. Adam is ALSI offering a workshop on Sunday April 10th (he has a 10 person minimum and we have 7 slots taken and we want to make this a GO!). The registratation deadline is TODAY so please email me at photographer67@comcast.net today (and mail me your check on Saturday). This is a great opportunity to learn firsthand from a Canon Explorer of Light !

"A Day in the Field with Adam Jones"

Workshop Overview: I envision the workshop as very hands on, nuts and bolts photography, with tips and techniques from 30+ years of photography. I'm open to a very full day, from sunrise to sunset if the club members wish to go that long. We will certainly break for lunch and dinner based around our shooting schedules of course. If the group wants a break in the middle of the day, we can do a morning shoot, then break and regroup for an afternoon shoot.

I'll leave it up to your club to offer several shooting locations, and we can visit as many of the locations as we need to fill the day or length of time the club wants. The more varied the locations, the more situations we can address and learn from in the field. I'm also fine with shooting architecture indoors or out, city skylines, zoos, botanical gardens, etc. About the only thing that does not work well for a mixed group is strict wildlife, where many photographers may not have the right equipment for such a specialized shoot.

An all day event -- location(s) of the clubs choice (We were thinking of perhaps Hammassett for sunrise, then breakfast, then heading East to Mystic until Sunset)

I'll cover scenics, depth of field considerations, finding the best compositions, natural light, filters, macro lenses and accessories, full flash and fill flash. Working with me in the field it is very easy for me to grasp each participants skill level and to work with them one on one.

Fee: $75/person, cash or check made payable to Adam Jones, collected by the club program organizer 4 weeks prior to the event -- email me and I will let you know where to mail the check.

# Participants: 10-12

Skill Level: All photographers are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

"When the Mouse is Away" Discount! Tim Grey

"When the Mouse is Away" Discount!

You're probably familiar with the old saying, "When the cat's away, the mice will play". Well, presumably in the context of a employer/employee relationship, the employer is the cat and the employee is the mouse. But in this case, it is the mouse who has gone away. My incredible and amazing assistant, Jeanette, has taken a much deserved (but far too brief) vacation to Hawaii. That means orders placed right now won't be shipped until Monday. To reward you for your patience, I'm offering a special discount off all products in my online store from now until Sunday. Jeanette will be back in the office on Monday, ready to ship your orders. So if you're a little patient, you can save 10% off any purchase.

To take advantage of this special offer, simply enter MOUSE in the Discount Code field during checkout from my online store at www.timgrey.com/store , and a 10% discount will be applied automatically.
