Light Studies: The Light and Atmosphere of Place
6/20/2009-6/26/2009
Where We Go: As a photographer, light can be both friend and foe. It can make an ordinary scene extraordinary. Light can also change without warning, and take the mood of the moment with it. David teaches you to manage and manipulate light so you can use it to your advantage in any situation. For six days in June, you explore the town of Missoula, Montana and create powerful images of everyday scenes that transform as the surrounding light changes. You photograph unique window displays in downtown Missoula, learn to emphasize shadows while at Caras Park on the banks of the Clark Fork River, and heighten your awareness of reflections in order to add dimension to your photographs.
What You Learn: David begins by using his own body of work to illustrate how light can be manipulated to achieve a desired effect. Midday lectures cover topics such as how to gauge the quality and direction of light, color temperature and how it affects your camera settings, and how to accentuate an object with flash. During daily field assignments when the light is at its best, you practice the topics covered in class and receive one-on-one attention from David. Critique sessions provide valuable feedback, allowing you to refine your technique and hone your awareness of light.
Who Should Attend: You should be comfortable with the manual exposure operation of your camera. Both digital images and 35 mm slides can be critiqued.
This workshop begins Saturday at 7 p.m. and ends Friday at noon.
