Professional Monitor Calibration for Still & Video
X-Rite
Free Webinar 11/6 Register Today!
As more and more still photographers move into videography with DSLR cameras the need for color management solutions specific to those output environments has become obvious. X-Rite's i1Profiler software now includes video presets for popular video formats including NTSC, PAL-SECAM, and Rec. 709. The introduction last year of the new i1Display Pro colorimeter combined with these presets in i1Profiler makes the X-Rite i1Display Pro the logical solution for calibrating and profiling monitors for video editing and output.

When i1Display Pro is combined with X-Rite ColorChecker targets the combination provides a capture to output solution for video editing that allows exceptional control over white balance in any scene. This webinar will review how to access and utilize the video presets in i1Profiler software and will briefly look at use of ColorCheckers in the video footage as a visual reference. If you are shooting, editing, and preparing video for output this webinar will give you the insight into X-Rite color management solutions that can streamline your color control in video.

Introduction To Sharpening

Introduction To Sharpening – Part One: The Basics

Sharpening photos seems to be one of those subjects which has no real agreed-upon standards. It's mostly a personal thing, depending upon one's abilities, tastes and equipment. Some people either don't know how or just use their processing software's built-in "sharpen" function, others have complete multi-stage workflows for various display sizes and uses. http://tutsplus.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=01a7104df9f31fd41e34ccbed&id=f3668561ed&e=e07e29e332

Introduction To Sharpening – Part Two: Going Further

In this installment, I'll be looking at some slightly more advanced sharpening knowledge and techniques, stepping off from the basics we looked at last time. The final two methods I want to look at are High Pass sharpening and Lab sharpening. http://tutsplus.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=01a7104df9f31fd41e34ccbed&id=b7b5b55ea9&e=e07e29e332

Halloween Photography Tips

Halloween Photography Tips

With Halloween just around the corner I thought it was time to update our Halloween Photography Tips article with some new information and photos.

Photography Tips to Keep in Mind for Halloween

There are plenty of subjects around to photograph at Halloween ranging from the traditional jack-o-lantern through to people in costume, to trick or treat ‘treats’ etc. It’s a time of color, emotion and lots of interesting subjects. The keys to capturing them are not that different from the normal keys to good composition in photography. As you photograph Halloween this year keep in mind some of the basics of good digital photography.

Read the article here

Got some Halloween Photos to Share? Post them we’d love to see them over at our Forum.

Guitars, Cadillacs, Hillbilly Music.

Guitars, Cadillacs, Hillbilly Music.

As some of you know, I am the guitarist for the band Wendy Owens and Renegade. We are a fairly successful band with 12 song CD out and have shared the stage with Big & Rich, Lee Brice, Trace Adkins, and Dierks Bentley. This year we put away roughly 57+ shows all over New York and Pennsylvania. One particular venue we play a 4 night stand is called “The Winner Circle Saloon” in Hershey, PA. When we are there they put us up in a hotel for the 4 nights. Each night we play a 4 hour show and then we are done. For the rest of the time, there really isn’t much going on, so we have to get creative. This past round in August was our one year anniversary playing there. Now Hershey is a pretty happening place with plenty of stuff to do…but having spent 24 days there, we have started running out of easy options. There are just so many restaurants and malls you can visit. There is Hershey Park but we are musicians and the park is quite expensive. In our travels there I have passed by this place with a cool old bus and car out front but I had no idea what it was. So bored in my room, I hopped on Google Maps and tracked down the bus and car to find out that it was the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum. You can find out more about this great place by following the links at the end of my article.

Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro lens for sale

Hi Lisa,

I would like to post a Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro lens for sale on your blog. I purchased it a couple of years ago to photograph small machine parts. I decided as long as I have the lens I would start doing some nature related macro photography. Well, it never happened, the lens is in new condition. Do you have any tips for photographing the lens? I have tried poster board as a background, too shiny.

the Greater New Haven Community Chorus' Photography Contest

Photography Competition

Be a part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration!

Download the rules and entry form.

The first competition, a photography contest, invites amateur photographers to submit images that reflect, “What I Love About New Haven.” Winning photographs from this competition will then serve as inspiration for a poetry contest (to be launched in December 2012). Selected poems from that competition will inspire the lyrics for the commissioned choral work.

Tom & Lisa -

Thank you again for responding to my email on Friday and taking my phone call.  It was a pleasure speaking with you.

As discussed, I am sending you some information about the Greater New Haven Community Chorus' Photography Contest that will help commemorate our 50th anniversary next year.

The information and entry form is also available on our website at www.gnhcc.org.  Please note that the contest entry deadline has been extended to November 1, 2012.  (This update is not yet showing in all areas of the website, but is being updated this week.  The information page and entry form do, however show that extension.)  We will work with you to make this as easy as possible for you to get the information out to your members.

In addition, I am including some contact information for some of our board and chair members.  Any one of us will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Susan Conover, President

Kathy McManus, Concert Chair

Alaina Driscoll, PR/Marketing Chair

Thank you again for your time and willingness to help us with this.  We certainly appreciate your help.

"The Year of the Snowy Owl"

"The Year of the Snowy Owl"

Local photographer Greg Lessard will present his exhibit “The Year of the Snowy Owl” at the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s North River Sanctuary on November 3, from 2-4PM.The exhibit will include twenty of Mr. Lessard’s favorite images of snowy owls and writings about his experiences photographing them.

Mr. Lessard, a Middleboro native, is a professional photographer. Currently, he leads local and national photography tours for the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Mr. Lessard is also a band director in the Scituate Public Schools.
Greg spent the winter of 2011-2012 photographing snowy owls and their behavior. His exhibit will include many beautiful portraits as well as some very exciting moments including an action sequence of a peregrine falcon attacking a snowy owl on the beach.
Here is a copy of the Mass Audubon press release for this event:

“Published: September 24, 2012
In 1978, Bob Lessard introduced his son Greg to the world of birding. At three, Greg learned the differences between cardinals, chickadees and blue jays. A love for nature and its creatures had been instilled in his young soul, a love that grew as he aged.
Years later, Bob and Greg attended a presentation on snowy owls by photographer Mark Wilson, images captured by the artist in the Arctic, the owl’s native nesting grounds. “I was fascinated,” Greg said, “with the idea of making my own snowy owl images.”
For years, Greg practiced his craft, honing his photography skills, tailoring his expertise to the outdoors and nature, birds in particular. Bob traveled with him, from Florida to Maine, to the great National Parks of the west. Finally, in November 2011, his chance struck. A massive, wide-scale irruptive flight of Snowy Owls brought the birds to the South Shore. Greg sought them out, and photographed his first one; two weeks later, in a chance encounter, he ran into Mark Wilson, and spent Thanksgiving Day photographing the owls with him. Those owls are again on display, a year later, at the North River Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield.

Join the photographer for an opening reception on Saturday, November 3, from 2-4 p.m.at the North River Wildlife Sanctuary. The exhibit will remain until November 21”

This is a link to the Mass Audubon press release for this event:http://www.massaudubon.org/news/regionalnews2.php?id=2098&region=se_cape_islands&panel=4
For any inquiries, please contact Greg Lessard at greglessardphoto@aol.com or (508) 946 5680

 Join me
at the opening of my exhibit "The Year of the Snowy Owl" at the Massachusetts Audubon North River Sanctuary in Marshfield, MA on November 3, from 2-4PM.

South West Light Experience: 2 - 4 November 2012

       South West Light Experience: 2 - 4 November 2012

The Ninety Degrees Five group (of which I am a member with Les Walkling, Michael and Christian Fletcher, Tony Hewitt and Nick Rains) is having an exhibition and seminar weekend down in South West Australia. It features their latest project photographed in the South West - and it will look amazing!

The exhibition is being held at the Garden Art Studio gallery at Yallingup Galleries, Yallingup and participants in the South West Light Experience are invited on the Friday night for a special preview where they can see the work and meet the photographers. They are also invited to the official opening the following night as well.
On the Saturday and Sunday, we have an amazing series of presentations by each of the photographers. We're still working out the venue, but it will probably be in Busselton or Dunsborough.

The price for the weekend is $295 and it's filling up fast. To read more about the South West Light Experience, click here.

The Joy of Macro

The Joy of Macro: Thomas Shahan is the Bob Ross of Bug Photography

Thomas Shahan is the closest thing we’ve found so far to a photographic Bob Ross. In the video above, he introduces us to the art of high-magnification macro photography, which he employs to create vibrant images of all kinds of tiny critters.

The Joy of Macro: Thomas Shahan is the Bob Ross of Bug Photography macro

Shahan uses equipment that isn’t inaccessibly expensive: a Pentax K-x DSLR with an old 28mm or 50mm prime lens that’s flipped around at the end of extension tubes (AKA reverse lens macro photography).

Video: http://youtu.be/wqRn3at0H60

You can check out Shahan’s work over on his website or through his Flickr account.

Beautiful and incredibly diverse, orchids are the most unrivalled in the plant world. They are the largest family of flowering plants with over 30,000 different species plus hybrids. Orchids can grow in the tropics, arctic tundra, and any place in-between. The reason for the diversity is their amazing ability to adapt to the given environment. With so many unique orchid varieties that can thrive in so many different growing conditions, it is easy to find an orchid that is well suited to the conditions that you can provide .... a kitchen counter top, the front end table in the foyer, your bedroom nightstand near the sheer-curtained window. There are many, many orchid varieties that make excellent house plants.
