Hummingbirds in Costa Rica: with Adam Jones & Jim Zuckerman

Hummingbirds in Costa Rica:  March 16-22, 2011
with Adam Jones & Jim Zuckerman

Once again Jim Zuckerman and I are teaming up.  This time we are excited to offer a spectacular photographic experience in Costa Rica.  The primary goal of this workshop is to photograph hummingbirds, in flight as well as perching. You'll be amazed at the images you capture.  We set up three work stations in each of the locations we stay where the hummers are accustomed to drinking from feeders.  Photographers will work on a rotation basis, and when you are not shooting hummers you can relax, do macro photography, and photograph other jungle creatures like the huge black guan (a large bird) and dozens of other tropical bird species. Several flash units are arranged artfully to simulate natural lighting (with a little artistic embellishment), and this enables us to freeze the wings of these beautiful little birds as they hover to drink nectar from tropical flowers.  We will have a couple of lectures where we show images with a digital projector explaining the flash and exposure principles involved so you have a full understanding how this technique  works.  It is quite interesting. You will be able to shoot many species over the course of the workshop in different locations.
All lighting equipment will be supplied for the hummingbird setups.
We also stay overnight at a hotel with the best view of Costa Rica’s most active volcano, Mt. Arena.  You can hear the boulders being thrust out of one of the vents and crashing down the mountain side, and at night the molten rocks leave trails of fire.  It’s truly awesome, and with long exposures it’s possible to capture some incredible images.
Another highlight of the trip is a visit to a reptile house where the owner helps us set up shots of tropical frogs and snakes, and the pictures that you’ll get here, also, are amazing. In just 6 days you’ll photograph some of Costa Rica’s most fascinating wildlife.
This workshop has two instructors — Jim Zuckerman and Adam Jones.  Adam is a fantastic nature photographer who conducts workshops and photo tours on his own, and we’ve decided to do this one together.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy him and learn from his vast knowledge in photography during the trip.
