Acadia National Park -- A Digital Photography Field Workshop

June 22-23, 2013
2 days $450

Class is limited to 12 participants.
Come join us at Maine's Acadia National Park with it's dramatic seascapes, dense forest dells, majestic views from granite peaks, on this visually rich two-day workshop with photographer and author Stephen Johnson.
We'll spend one day on Mt. Desert Island and another on the Schoodic Peninsula where Stephen will lead participants to some of his favorite Acadia locations bathed in Maine's unique light. The variations of this light as it as plays on the unusual pink granite boulders, and surging surf can be quite beautiful. We'll photograph the area's natural landscapes sculpted by the tremendous forces of Atlantic Ocean waves as well as its man-made constructions of traditional New England villages. Acadia NPS website and Acadia Map

The Workshop

The first morning, we will spend a couple of hours preparing for our outings. Topics covered will be optimal digital camera use in a variety of formats, file size and printing considerations. Fieldwork with intensive presentations and assistance will fill our days. We will photograph in some of the most spectacular places in the park, see a variety of landforms and work on our photography, An evening critique will be conducted, opening files, review successes and challenges of the photographs made during the day, going back in the field the next day and putting into practice lessons learned.

The advent of the digital age of photography provides unique opportunities for field photography instruction. We will be reviewing work on camera screens as it is made and on portable computers, examining exposure, composition and emotional impact.

Field instruction will concentrate on technical and aesthetic issues, working to develop a personal vision of these places. We will be doing some walking and hiking.

Weather can be variable, and Maine does have rain during the summer. The workshop will adapt as the weather creates and blocks opportunities, always providing more instruction and often beautiful light.

Stephen Johnson (CA) Twelve Steps to Improve Your Digital Photography

Common problems make for common grief. In this lecture Stephen addresses many of the problems that come up for people, often with the user not even knowing what is going wrong. These issues are covered with clarity and in context so that their purpose and problem causing potential is understood and able to be applied to a photographer's workflow immediately.  Due to time constraints, Part I will be presented and includes the importance of monitor calibration, using RAW to preserve bit depth, imitating RAW capabilities with the camera histogram, how to use the histogram, and color encoding grey balance. Steve will also cover how to customize RAW presets for interpretation and data preservation, and the use of metadata to name, label, add keywords and archive your files. The NECCC conference has a great line up of speakers this July! Find out more and Register Here.

About the castle:
After the Spanish-American War, arms merchant Francis Bannerman bought 90 percent of the U.S. Army's decommissioned weapons. Bannerman then constructed an arsenal on an island in the Hudson River. Built in the style of a Scottish castle, the arsenal featured a gateway once outfitted with a drawbridge. Long neglected and devastated by fire in 1969, the castle is now the focus of local preservation efforts.

CANON EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Version 1.2.1 Available

CANON EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Version 1.2.1 Available

Canon EOS 5D Mark III users should be thrilled to learn that has just released exciting new free firmware. The highlight for nature photographers is that Canon has enabled centre AF point auto-focus when extender/lens combinations have combined maximum aperture of f/8. If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points. This option effectively expands the size of the AF detection area to enhance autofocus performance with subjects that appear small in the viewfinder and difficult to track, such as small animals and birds in flight. AF points above and below the center will be sensitive to vertical contrast, while points to the left and right will be sensitive to horizontal contrast.

Check-out the comprehensive list of fixes and other improvements and download Firmware V. 1.2.1 HERE

Bonus tip: Start with ISO 3200, 20 seconds, f/2.8 as a starting point, this is what I call my 'no fail' setting. There is a lot more involved to get the perfect exposure, but this will get you a good exposure 90% of the time.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, 17 April 2013 - Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions celebrating its 40th anniversary, announced today the launch of the Northern Explorers of Light program and its accompanying website www.canon.ca/pro. The Northern Explorers of Light are a prestigious group of seven Canadian imaging professionals who serve as ambassadors for the Canon brand and share their photographic passions and technical expertise with aspiring photographers.

Canon Celebrates Significant Milestone with the Production of 90 Million EF Interchangeable Lenses

Canon Celebrates Significant Milestone with the Production of 90 Million EF Interchangeable Lenses

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.

Canon EF lens-series lineup
90 Million EF lenses Commemorative logo
The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company's Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company's manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.
EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.
Canon's proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element, and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology.
With the introduction in May this year of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range, along with EF Cinema Lenses for digital cinematography, Canon's extensive EF lens-series lineup now comprises a total of 84 models.1
Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers-from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals-while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

10 ways to cut through photography gear smoke and mirrors

I love #2 -- I see so many people with cheapo glass and kit lenses and they are talking about buying a new camera.  The most important part of taking the photograph is the 10 inches behind the viewfinder, then the glass, then the body! I would choose a Canon L lens on a Rebel over a cheapo lens on a top end camera any day! Lisa

10 ways to cut through photography gear smoke and mirrors

Here are 10 of my most popular posts breaking through the smoke and mirrors on some gear related issues. Many of which are hard truths I personally spent a LOT to learn.
  1. How do you know when you really (actually?) need a new camera? Your camera: 5 signs you’re ready for an upgrade
  2. Is a better camera really going to make a difference? How about a better lens instead? 5 reasons you should choose a new lens over a new camera
  3. What does all that sensor jargon really mean? Making sensor of it all
  4. This is me spending a lot when my photography was a baby: my love affair with glass. Every single lens I’ve owned.
  5. Full frame isn’t always better: 3 ways the 7d is better than the 5d
  6. Wanna see how full frame really stacks up against cropped sensor in the ISO war? ISO comparison shots: 5D vs 7D
  7. Did you know that the term “full frame” is a marketing ploy? Full frame in full English
  8. Are more expensive lenses really worth the money? Yup.
  9. Aargh but what about that nasty lens envy?!
  10. What do those numbers on your lens even mean? Lens Lingo.

How to avoid Star Trails with the '500 Rule'

I only recently discovered the work and talent of David Kingham!

How to avoid Star Trails with the '500 Rule'

"Due to the rotation of the earth it appears as though the stars are moving through the sky in long exposures. Star trails can be a desired effect when done for much longer exposures like this imageStarry Night which was a 90 minute exposure. But in this case we want points of light to represent how we see the stars with our eyes. To achieve points of light you can use a simple rule, it's often called the '500 rule'.

500 Rule: 500 divided by the focal length of your lens = the longest exposure before stars start to trail or blur (in seconds).

How Does Third-Party Firmware Affect Canon, Nikon and Panasonic Camera Warranties?

"We’ve covered Magic Lantern firmware and the new Canon 5D Mark III raw video feature lately. However, one thing we haven’t touched on is how using and installing third-party firmware on your DSLR affects your camera warranty."

"Magic Lantern (ML) is a Canon firmware toolbox specifically aiming for the video segment. It has recently got a huge buzz for enabling a Canon's 5DmkII to shoot 24P RAW video. And while ML is not the oldest of custom firmware, it is definitely one of the more mature ones, with many movie makers using it on production setups. As with CHDK, it usually run from the memory card and does not require a firmware "flush." http://www.diyphotography.net/the-ultimate-custom-firmware-for-any-camera-roundup

Canon
"Basically, to my understanding Canon said that using Magic lantern would not kill the warranty. But if the camera was to be bricked by ML, they would charge for the fix. If the damage is not ML related it would be covered. you can read the correspondence and judge for yourself."

Nikon
"Thank you for contacting Nikon, I'll be more than glad to assist you. Using a firmware version from an unknown source will void your warranty."

Model Photography at NECCC

Model Photography. A video has been produced as an orientation for the NECCC Conference models. We thought the attendees would be interested in viewing it - especially first-time attendees. http://vimeo.com/64017742
