For photographers and artists alike it begs the question, how can one company own the rights to a piece of nature and forbid other artists to capture and sell their renditions? Because it has been trademarked by The Pebble Beach Corporation – it’s their official logo.
"One of the more indelible settings along the famed 17-Mile Drive is unquestionably the Lone Cypress. The old tree, estimated to be around 250 years old, just might be the most photographed tree in North America. It resides within a couple miles of one of the world’s most beautiful (and expensive) golf courses – Pebble Beach. It’s also a registered trademark of The Pebble Beach Corporation, thus photographers and artists are warned, via a sign near the parking area, that the tree can be photographed or painted only for personal use – no commercial sales are allowed unless approved by The Pebble Beach Corporation."
