Shooting JPG vs. Raw

Shooting JPG vs. Raw: DSLR Know-How with Tamron
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Yjv8FknqA&feature=player_embedded#!

He says "cameras can shoot RAW plus JPG. I don't know why they do that, but you could"
Really?
There are many reasons to shoot RAW plus JPG
(1) you can capture B&W in the camera and still have the RAW file for full color. This can be very important when learning B&W composition as the image on your LCD will be the JPG and will look B&W. Looking at an image in B&W will definitely help you with your compositions! Even if you ultimately decide to custom process the B&W from the RAW file using a Topaz or Nik plugin you will know what you captured when you are capturing it
(2) Shooting a wedding where they want B&W (and color) images. You do not have to spend endless hours post-processing. If you can get it right in camera then by all means.
(3) Shooting a portrait session where they want B&W images. If you are putting B&W images on your wall and showing your client color images on your LCD there is a disconnect. Many maternity and newborn and child sessions are awesome in B&W and if you are touting your session as a B&W session then you should be showing them the images in B&W
(4) You are just learning about RAW. If you get perfect images THEN you can delete the RAW files back at home and only process those files where the exposure is not dead on.
(5) You are usually dead on with your exposures and don't want to waste time processing RAW files, but want to be 100% that you nailed each image. Let's say you are photographing flowers and a bird or a bear comes along and you have to swing the camera around and you cannot adjust your setting fast enough. If you shot RAW you stand a decent shot of being able to save that image, but if you only shot JPG then if the exposure was not correct then you are out of luck.

I am sure that there are other instances where RAW + JPG is good...

How to Print Copyrighted Images

Printing Copyrighted Images

Posted by brother7 Have you ever tried to print images from a TFP/TFCD photoshoot only to be denied by the photo lab clerk? This often happens when the images look professional or bear a photographer’s watermark. Most models think that since they are the subject of the photos to be printed, they should be able to print them. Wrong! And here’s why.

According to A Digital Photographer’s Guide to Model Releases by Dan Heller:

A copyright springs into existence the moment a given work is created. For photography, the work is instantly copyrighted by the photographer when the shutter is released. [...] Anything that involves an original creative process is automatically copyrighted by the creator when it takes a physical form.

As the creator, the photographer owns the copyright, not the model. Therefore, in printing images from a TFP photoshoot, the model violates the photographer’s copyright, a legal no-no.

Once upon a time, photo labs were lax in their enforcement of a photographer’s copyright. As the saying goes, it’s all legal until you get caught. In 1989, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) sued Eckerd Drugs for copyright infringement and won $112,500 in damages. PPA won a similar suit against Linn Photo in 1994 and settled another suit with K-mart in 1999. In 2001, PPA formed Copyright Defense, a legal watchdog that lobbies for photographers’ rights on Capitol Hill. With more attention focused on copyright issues, places like Walmart, Sam’s Club and Costco implemented measures to stem copyright infractions.

What’s a model to do to get her digital images printed? The answer: get the photographer’s permission to print the photos. Here are the links to Walmart Photo Copyright Policy and Sam’s Club Copyright Release (PDF). For other photo printers, use the Permission to Print Photographs Form (PDF) that I created, compliments of brother7!

" was a bit hesitant at first to buy this lens because of the weight, but i really needed f2.8 at 500. I take lots of outdoor pictures of my extended family who happens to live 30 minutes away. With this particular Sigma lens i can easily get on my roof and snap away at them. It's a great lens for candid shots because they never know i'm taking their picture. "

Adobe Unveils Photoshop Elements 10

New Release Highlights Intuitive Editing Features with Intelligent Organizational and Sharing Capabilities

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sept. 20, 2011 - Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 software for Windows and Mac. The newest version of Adobe’s No. 1 selling consumer photo-editing software, Photoshop Elements 10 provides a complete solution with amazingly powerful yet easy-to-use features that continue to expand the possibilities for organizing, editing and sharing photo creations.

“Celebrating a 10-year history as well as a landmark 10th release, Photoshop Elements 10 is a showcase for innovation and expands the incredible things our customers can do with their photos,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president of Digital Imaging Products, Adobe. “The new intelligent feature set and automated functionality in Photoshop Elements allow photo enthusiasts to elevate everyday photos from good to great.”

Making Photos Pop with Innovative Tools

Powered by the same engine as Adobe Photoshop, the industry standard for digital imaging, Photoshop Elements 10 utilizes intelligent technology that makes it easy to give everyday photos a boost. Photoshop technology is brought to life through easy to follow steps for achieving stunning photo effects in an approachable way with new Guided Edits, which are very popular and successful. These include innovations such as creating a shallow depth of field or designing a fun layout of snapshots with Picture Stack, or even adding a dream-like diffused glow with the Orton effect.

New text functionality, which scrapbookers will especially love, allows users to add curving, flowing text to a photo that automatically follows the outline of a subject, custom path or shape. In addition, special crop guides now help users at any level easily achieve interesting, visually appealing compositions. Also, the Smart Brush lets users paint unique effects onto specific areas of photos and now features 30 new effects like Pencil Sketch and Oil Pastel.

Organize Like Never Before

With Photoshop Elements 10, users not only have access to fun editing and creation features, but also the ability to organize photos. Object Search automatically finds objects within photos, such as a landmark, flower or pet. The Elements Organizer can even automatically detect duplicate or near-duplicate photos so users can clean up and delete the photos they don’t need and quickly group similar collections of photos. Also, photo enthusiasts who shoot video can now upload their clips directly to Facebook or YouTube.

Photoshop Elements 10 users can purchase Adobe’s integrated online service, Photoshop Elements Plus, which includes 20GB of storage for automatic online backup and sharing (up to 15,000 photos or four hours of DVD-quality video), as well as access to an extensive library of how-to's, artwork and Online Album templates for sharing online.

Sharing Made Seamless

Whether users are social networking or using sharing sites like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube or Photoshop.com, Photoshop Elements 10 lets customers share their photos directly from within the Elements Organizer and view them from virtually anywhere on the go, offering a comprehensive set of sharing capabilities for today’s increasingly social and mobile worlds. For Facebook lovers, Photoshop Elements integrates users’ Facebook Friend Lists for easily tagging photos that can then be shared directly to Facebook.

On top of all these new features and capabilities, Photoshop Elements 10 enables developers to create tablet and mobile applications that interact with the software via the included API. This opens Photoshop Elements 10 to a new world where the fun and interactivity of touch devices and Photoshop Elements intersect.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for Windows and Mac is available now at www.adobe.com, and will also be available soon at retail outlets such as Adorama, Amazon.com, Apple, B and H, Best Buy, Buy.com, Costco, Dell, Fry’s, New Egg, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples and Walmart. Creating Beauty in the Mundane: Great Photos of Park Benches

By Light Stalking
While Jim Richardson famously said, “If you want to be a better photographer, stand in front of more interesting stuff,” it’s also true that a good photographer can make beautiful images out of mundane subjects. Nothing shows that better than these photographs of park benches. There is beauty in everything if you know how to draw it out.

Video Shows Secret of Hummingbird Mating Success: Shake the Tail Feathers

Thanks Linda for passing this along!

Video Shows Secret of Hummingbird Mating Success: Shake the Tail Feathers

The courtship songs of the male Anna's hummingbird are produced by his tail feathers during a steep aerial dive nearby the object of his affection. Now Yale University scientists show that the song — and therefore the mating success of the hummingbird — depends upon the exact aerodynamic relationship of two of the bird's outer tail feathers. In the Sept. 9 issue of the journal Science, Yale scientists use high-speed video in wind tunnels and animation to show how exactly how the feathers act upon each other to produce this song of love.

Video of the research is available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPaVjhUsdAw
Yale authors of the paper are Christopher J. Clark and Richard O. Prum.

Topaz

Have you tried Topaz yet???
They make awesome software!

I love Adjust!
Simply -- wow!
and some of the presets just POP your image.
I use Topaz Adjust all the time!
Lisa

I use DeNoise all the time and think that it is THE BEST noise reduction software out there (and I have used many). It is as good as Define at removing noise, but it is FAR superior than Define at keeping your subject matter sharp. Some noise reduction software just doesn't remove noise while other noise reduction software remove noise but softens the whole image.

And remask. Masking complicated selections is HARD! Topaz remask makes it easier

Camera – Tom Cuchara, MNEC

Camera: Got a new camera? Always wanted to learn how to take better photographs? Want to improve your photographs for camera club competition? Want to learn how to take better photographs of your kids? Want to learn how to use some of those great features in your camera?

Then this workshop is for you! This workshop is designed to help you improve your SOOC (straight out of the camera) photographs. Learn about composition and the “rule of thirds”. Learn how to adjust depth of field even if you are “program mode” and learn how to preview your depth of field. Tom will show you how to take photographs using assorted camera settings (shutter speed, depth of field, etc.) and creating better compositions of landscapes, people, etc. At the end of the session some of the images taken by the workshop attendees will be viewed and discussed with regards to things that could have been done IN the camera to improve the image. Bring your camera and your lens/lenses and your camera manual. Tom will show you how to take better photographs.

Photoshop CS4/CS5: In this Photoshop workshop for the Beginner and Intermediate user Lisa will demonstrate “non-destructive” editing techniques which will enable you to make your "good" photograph "better". She will walk you thru layers and adjustment layers, show you some of the most often used filters and demonstrate some popular editing tools, such as crop, clone, patch, heal. In addition, the workshop will cover how to sharpen an image, how to create black and white and color images, and how to apply an effect to a selected area of your photograph via the use of layers and masks. Attendees must bring a laptop pre-loaded with Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements 9: For the Beginner and Intermediate Elements user. Begin with downloading your photos from your memory card to the Organizer in Elements. Hazel will review the workflow of your image, beginning with Layers - why they are important and what they do. She will demonstrate basic editing techniques - cropping, resizing, straightening; fixing color and lighting; fixing "problem" areas; a few basic filters; and finally, sharpening. If time allows we will move in to some of the more "creative" techniques. Detailed notes and sample photos will be supplied so you can also practice at home. Attendees must provide their own laptop pre-loaded with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:

Hazel Meredith, MNEC: Hazel is currently president of the Huntington Photographic Society; immediate past-president and current treasurer of the Greater Bridgeport Camera Club; president of the Connecticut Association of Photographers; and a member of the New Haven Camera Club and the Photographic Society of America – of which she is also the PSA “Journal” Camera Club Columnist. Both Tom and Lisa have the honors distinction of Master Members of the New England Camera Club Council (MNEC) They enjoy presenting a wide variety of photo presentations, instructional programs and workshops. They have been photographing weddings, babies, parties, portraits, etc. professionally for over 14 years and have their own Photography Studio. Their portrait philosophy is based on “We do not remember days, we remember moments” and they are honored to be able to create lasting memories at each step of your life. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions and their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life, Wild Bird, Birder’s World, in calendars, on the cover of the Wolf Conservation Calendar and on the cover of paperback novel.

Carl Heilman -- New Photo Tour / Workshops / Program

After wrapping up some outside work I needed to get done while the weather was still warm, I've gotten back into setting up some of the new workshop web pages. We have set workshop dates for 2012, although I still need to get final information together for a couple of the new listings. Check the full list for 2012 at

http://www.carlheilman.com/photo-workshops-calendar.html
I recently scheduled a 'Photography Camp' with Gore Mountain. The day will feature a morning PowerPoint program on camera basics, composition, lighting, and various camera techniques. After lunch we'll work with various photography techniques in the field. Included in the day is a gondola ride so we can photograph the views from the top of Bear Mountain. Info is on the web at http://www.carlheilman.com/photo_workshop_gore.html

We still have a few spaces left for our 5 day High Peaks workshop that I do each year for the Adirondack Photography Institute. We do a little hiking to get to a couple of the destinations, but most of the shooting locations are close to the roads. While there is time spent each day for instruction and critique, most of the day is out in the field, going to a variety of shooting locations in the Lake Placid / Keene / Wilmington area.

I have set up an Adventure Photo Tour on Oct. 15, hiking and photographing our way back to the gorge on the West Branch of the Sacandaga River near Wells. I just uploaded the information page for this tour to -
http://www.carlheilman.com/photo-tour-sacandaga.html

On Wed. evening, Sep 21, I'll be doing a presentation for the Schenectady Photographic Society. The program is free and open to the public. Hope to see you there! http://www.schenectadyphotographicsociety.com/welcome.jsp?splash

Roman Kurywezak Presents

“Photographing the Night Sky”

Tuesday September 13th 7:30PM

At Gateway Camera Club

Framingham, MA

New Members and Guests Welcome

This is a Free Program

For Directions: http://www.gatewaycameraclub.org/

Contact Paul Smith with questions: diffangle@aol.com

An educational how-to program designed to open up our eyes to the possibility of photographing landscapes with the star filled sky as a backdrop.

Equipment, tips, techniques, and camera setting for both star points and star trails will be covered. We will also explore “light painting” of a foreground subject as well as overcoming obstacles when the conditions are less than ideal. His e-book on the subject; “A Digital Guide to Photographing the Night Sky” was released in Feb. 2011 and is available as both a download from his site: www.roaminwithroman.com or as a hard copy CD.

Roman Kurywczak bio:

Roman started out attending art school for graphic design in the mid- 1980’s. During that time, he received his first film camera and that moment changed the direction of his life forever! The camera allowed him to combine his love of our natural world by giving him the tool to capture all that beauty in an artistic way. Roman immersed himself in all technical aspects of photography, from his humble beginnings in a camera club, to now being a full time professional nature photographer. He still looks back fondly at his early years because at the camera club, he met the two people who would mentor him through the years and soon become his friends. He has won numerous awards locally as well as nationally, but the biggest satisfaction he has received over the years has been when he started his own tour company in 1993, for photographers, that caters to small groups (only 4 participants in the US) and provides individualized attention. The company has since grown to include international destinations but the satisfaction he gets from teaching on his instructional tours remians one of his most memorable photographic achievements and drives him to this day.

You can find more of his work on my website: www.roaminwithroman.com

or on his blog: http://roaminwithroman.wordpress.com/

Sunny 16-July Assignment Gallery

Sunny 16-July Assignment Gallery

I’m not going to lie, this was a tough assignment. I asked people to ignore the light meter built into their cameras and evaluate an exposure based on the Sunny 16 method. This assignment was intended to push people to truly understand light and exposure. I applaud Barry and Genevieve for going out and giving it a try.

There is a good chance that if you are using Sunny 16 and shooting in bright sunlight there will be a lot of shadows. As I discuss in Part I & Part II of my Sunny 16 article, this requires a little bit of exposure adjustment to maintain details in those shadows. This set of [...]

Sunny 16 Exposure Without a Meter: Part I

Sunny 16 Exposure Without a Meter: Part I

by Neil Chaput de Saintonge

I use the Sunny 16 technique as the surest and quickest way to take the mental wrangling (or at least some of it) out of shooting when my scene is in the bright sun. For those unfamiliar with the term, Sunny 16 refers to a manual exposure technique in which you set your camera to use an [...]
