New England Fall Foliage Photo Workshop

New England Fall Foliage Photo Workshop

October 2-6, 2011, price $1,080.

Sunday noon through Thursday afternoon at 2:00

Discounts for early birds, BCPA alumni, ASMP, & NANPA (association proof required).

Transportation, lodging, meals, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the participants.

Limit 12 with 2 instructors (maximum 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio)

Click here for more information about accommodations, closest airport, etc.
Join our photography workshop in stunning Vermont and New Hampshire. People come from all over the world to see the incomparable foliage of northern New England. The riot of colors against the deep green conifers, along with quaint New England villages, farms, and covered bridges, make great subject matter. We'll take in little-known locations that are favorites of The Barefoot Contessa, a native of this area.

Because of Margo's long-time, intimate knowledge of northern New Englnd, we'll have some great locations all to ourselves, and you'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.
We'll be based near Dartmouth College in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley on either side of the border between central New Hampshire and Vermont.

You'll discover covered bridges, a staple of this part of the country. Some are red, some weathered barn board, and all carry their own characteristics.

Northern New England is also a geological treasure trove. For the initiated, you will recognize many features that you have studied — moraines, upheavals, intrusions, even rare granite that is usually hidden deep in the core of a mountain. For others, you will find that the varied landscape will be interesting subject matter to photograph.

Scouting Option:

For those who want more time with Margo and Arnie, we offer the opportunity to scout and shoot with them before most of our domestic workshops. We limit this to two people per day who ride in the car with the instructors. During these days, there is lots of one-to-one instruciton while Arnie and Margo do their own photography and final scouting for the workshop.

Some of our participants like to come in a day ahead and get some added instruction on Lightroom.
Contact us for details.

Practical Details:

We start out with some technical information before heading out for our first afternoon of photography. Our workshops include the following:

•Maximum 6-to-1 ratio students to instructors

•Opening wine-and-pizza reception;

•Primer booklet to help you get started;

•Early-morning and late-afternoon shoots;

•Mid-day downloading of your images and processing with the latest version of Lightroom;

•Lots of individual instruction in both the field and classroom;

•Daily critiques, both individual and group;

•Discussions on various aspects of photography, including digital workflow;; and

•Lots of fun and frivolity throughout!

If you have not already done so, be sure to check our FAQs for questions you may have as well as for equipment and installed downloads you need to bring to the workshop including, if necessary, the free, 30-day, trial versions of Adobe and other imaging products.
You will also receive written instructions on the ins and outs of successfully and easily turning your favorite digital images into beautiful prints straight out of the latest version of Lightroom using your own printer.
Cost: $1,080 (discounts available)

To sign up, fill out the Application Form.

Click here for more information about accommodations, discounts, PayPal payments, trip insurance, closest airport, etc. New England in the fall is extremely popular, so at the very least, reserve your room; you can always cancel later. I have heard from several of our participants that they have already made their reservations!

How to Soften Skin in Photoshop For Portraits

How to Soften Skin in Photoshop For Portraits

"One of the most common types of retouching for portraits is softening the skin. No matter how great someones skin is there always happens to be a few pimples or something else going on whenever a portrait shoot is scheduled. Personally I am not a huge retoucher with my work, I want people to look true to themselves and not like a plastic doll. However when someone is having a ‘bad skin day’ I will go in and do some smoothing out to clean them up a bit. Here is a quick photoshop tutorial on how to soften skin and works great for smoothing out little lines, blemishes or overall oily skin."

looking for lenses

Please contact Ev at kingagr@yahoo.com if you have something...

Hi Lisa,

A friend of mine is looking for some lenses for her son's camera. Would you know of anyone who might have these? Perhaps someone in the New Haven Camera Club?
An ultra-wide for his D300 to balance out the kit. Best would be a tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, or the nikon 12-24mm f/4.

Thanks Lisa!
Eva..

You are only $3 from better skies in outdoor portraits

You are only $3 from better skies in outdoor portraits

Ever wonder how Sports Illustrated gets those awesome skies in their outdoor portraits? This easy and inexpensive trick will set you on your way to awesome vibrant skies in outdoor portraits just like the pros – without a ton of Photoshop work. So, I hate editing photos. Any tricks that can help me get awesome photos in camera are always at the top of my list. If you want awesome, bolder skies in outdoor portraits without having to “mess with the sliders”, here’s what you’ll need:
1) A decent sky with some color in it. Blank overcast days are a no-no for this trick. I like blue.

2) A camera that allows you to shoot RAW or adjust white balance in camera

3) A decent flash – preferably one that allows for higher sync speeds

4) A few adhesive Velcro squares

5) Color flash gels – you can get individual ones for $1-2.00 each or this complete set for around $16

September 25 - October 1, 2011 -- Colorado Fall Color Photo Workshop

September 25 - October 1, 2011 -- Colorado Fall Color Photo Workshop
$2,145
Flight Destination: Montrose, CO

Fall in the Colorado high country is a sight to behold. It's no wonder so many people travel to this area year after year to see the aspens changing to gold and even orange in some areas. Rugged mountain backdrops just add to the beauty of this annual photography rite.

Crisp blue skies, yellow trees and snow dusting the mountaintops make for some great color contrasts as well as great compositions. Learn some new techniques for shooting well before the sun breaks the horizon that will amaze you and everyone who looks at your photos. Special exposure tips will also be provided to help give a bit of punch to the colors. The days will be long as we will leave to be at our first location well before sunrise and we will shoot until we lose light at night. There will be mid-day breaks for resting, downloading images and instructional programs.

As a resident of Colorado since 1991, I have found many hidden spots that make this a memorable experience. The trip is based out of three areas - Aspen, Crested Butte and Ridgway. The first two nights and mornings will be spent near Aspen to do a sunrise photo shoot at the popular Maroon Bells area.

The next two nights will be spent in Crested Butte exploring roads around there. The last two nights will be spent in Ridgway. Some of the best color in Colorado is found in these areas including getting some red from the scrub oaks. One area we visit near Crested Butte is known for a group of aspens that turn red every year. This aspen grove, at Kebler Pass, is the largest single living organism on earth.

Other popular areas besides Maroon Bells we visit include Dallas Divide, Last Dollar Road, The Dyke on Kebler Pass near Crested Butte and Owl Creek Pass. Easy but bumpy four-wheel drive roads will be encountered on this trip.

Some of these spots are the most photographed places in the state and you can see for yourself why. Even with many photos taken here, each one you take will be different from those made in the past.

These workshops do not involve much trail hiking, however, they can involve walking along roads and slopes with uneven surfaces. Be prepared for possible temperature extremes and sudden changes in weather. Be aware that mornings and evenings can be very chilly in September and snow is a possibility at higher elevations.

August in Maine, where the Atlantic meets the coast, is delightful. With sunny and foggy days, you'll see the various moods of this craggy area that Margo and Arnie love to photograph. "Down East" Maine is an area known for its dramatic rocky coast, pounding surf, wonderful lighthouses, and charming fishing harbors and coves dotted with lobster boats. And we mustn't forget the famous Maine fir trees that add wonderful elements to the coastline.

Margo and Arnie will take you to areas where Winslow Homer, Andy Wyeth, and other artists have painted for centuries.

We will be headquarted at an inn right on New Harbor within walking distance of our favorite fish shack. Bring along your spouse. significant other, or friend, always welcome at our workshops and who instantly become part of our group.

As noted in the spring Maine workshops, the Barefoot Contessa grew up sailing this area, so knows it well and looks forward to introducing you to her special haunts where you'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

New Harbor is in the heart of an area that has produced many of Margo's photographs that have been published in calendars, travel magazines, and coffee-table books. After the workshop, plan on taking an extra few days to explore this area on your own, return to places we have taken you, and use your new-found knowledge to make more beautiful photographs.

Scouting Option:

For those who want more time with Margo and Arnie, we offer the opportunity to scout and shoot with them before most of our domestic workshops.
