The company was founded in 1933 with the name Seiki Kōgaku Kenkyūjo (or Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory) by the co-founder Yoshida Gorō and his brother-in-law Uchida Saburō, funded by Mitarai Takeshi, a close friend of Uchida. Its original purpose was to research into the development of quality cameras. In June 1934 they released their first camera, the Kwanon (pronounced kannon), named after the Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy of the same name. The following year the camera's name was changed to the less overtly religious Canon (pronounced kyanon). The company changed its name to Canon Camera in 1947, and to Canon in 1969.

The company was founded in 1917 as Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō K.K. with the merger of two Japanese optical firms with military connections. The company's first camera lenses were designed in the 1920s by Heinrich Acht, who was invited with a team of German engineers. After the departure of Acht, the lens design department was taken over by Sunayama Kakuya. The first lens mounted on a camera for civil use was the Anytar 12cm f/4.5 made in the early 1930s, renamed Nikkor in 1932.

An AKC sanctioned all breed, obedience and junior dog show. Public is invited to watch the competition and meet the dog owners and handlers.

About the Foot Guard Dog Show... Since the 1920’s, the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Athletic Association has sponsored, with a small number of exceptions, an annual AKC sanctioned dog show. The current format of the show is All Breed, Obedience and Junior Showmanship (AB/O/JSHW). Dogs entered in our show compete for championship points. We generally have around 1200 dogs entered in our show representing all seven groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding) and representing about 140 different breeds. These entrants come from all over the United States and Canada. Our show is held, generally, on the third Sunday in February of the year. We partner with the Elm City Kennel Club, who holds their show the day prior to ours and we use the same venue. For the past several years, that venue has been the XL Center in Hartford, CT. The Hartford Obedience Training Club runs the obedience trials at our show. Our dog show superintendent is MB-F, Inc. of Greensboro, NC, one of the premier dog show producers and managers in the United States. Some of the proceeds of our dog show are used to fund two scholarships that are given to pre-veterinary students at the University of Connecticut; one attending the School of Agriculture and one attending the School of Natural Resources. In addition to our AKC sanctioned show, we also hold a match dog show sometime in late September or early October. This is an informal or ‘practice’ show so no championship points are awarded. Instead, it is an opportunity for dogs and handlers to learn how to show. Our match show is held and the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard reservation in Avon, CT. Questions or comments? Workshop Overview
Breathtaking is the word for the destinations visited during this week. This is a tour of jewels along the dramatic Maine seacoast while it is flooded with autumnal color. We'll visit Acadia National Park, Pemaquid Point, the Union lakes region, and many tucked away treasures along the the St. George River Valley (including some spots only the locals know about). Harvest season finds the air exhilaratingly crisp setting forest canopies and blueberry fields afire with stunning reds, oranges, and yellows. My private studio will be our home base where demonstrations will take place and from which we will make daily excursions. Reviews of participant's work during the week are conducted in studio, in transit, and on location. Get ready for a non-stop week of making images.

Participants may wish to take extra time on the weekends before or after the workshop to visit nearby islands (Monhegan, Vinalhaven, or Isleboro) or continue on to the White Mountains in Vermont.

Content
Digital imaging has been revolutionizing photography and liberating photographers for over a decade. Today the possibilities for photographic image-making appear limitless. The new potentials of digital imaging aren't unlocked in the lab alone. Once you fully understand the possibilities and begin to integrate them into your practice, you will start making photographs in new ways, hopefully even ways all your own.

That's what this week is for. After new working methods and perceptual patterns have been suggested, participants will be encouraged to make new images employing both historical and contemporary methods, searching for an optimal balance tailored for each inpidual. You’ll find a balance that’s best for you. For some this week will be an introduction to the possibilities, for others it will be about tying them all together. It will be a complete immersion for everyone. The most important thing to bring is an open mind.

Freeman Patterson offers excellent advice. List all of the rules of photography. And break them. If you do this, you’ll develop a better understanding of the medium. I recommend you take this advice one step further. List all of your rules of photography. And break them. You’ll either find confirmation that what you’re doing is right for you or you’ll make new breakthroughs.
Daily readings, discussions, demonstrations, and assignments will guide inpidual explorations. Once an optimal image adjustment strategy (including converting images with Camera Raw and sharpening) has been outlined and detailed, I'll demonstrate and you'll learn techniques such as how to expand format, extend depth of field, increase dynamic range, paint with light, use creative focus effects, convert color to black-and-white, and much more.

Participants need a digital camera, portable computer, and Adobe Photoshop. Manufacturer loans may be available. Photographic skills, an open mind, and curiosity are the primary requirements for this week. Students will be required to have only a general understanding of digital imaging, though some experience with Photoshop is recommended. The more you bring to the week, the more you'll take back.

Les Campbell's matting course

Just received this email from Elaine, Les Campbell's assistant, about a new round of print matting and framing classes coming up at Les's home at Sky Meadow. While Les normally does this over 3 Saturday mornings but in the past, he has done it for folks from Connecticut over 1 Saturday morning and the next Saturday morning and part of the afternoon, to cut down on the driving to and from Connecticut. If you want to learn how to mount, mat, and frame your prints, this is an excellent way and place to learn. Besides the class fee, there are charges for the materials used but Les marks these items up only 10% over his costs to keep the total costs down.
