"This apparent difference in focal length, however, can impact how you frame your shot. If, for example, you are using a camera with a crop factor of 1.6 and are looking to recreate the framing provided by a 50mm lens shot from the same distance on a full frame camera, then some simple math might lead you to the conclusion that a 35mm lens is what you will want to use (35mm x 1.6 = 56mm). The 35mm lens won’t become something it’s not just because it’s attached to a crop sensor camera, but it will closely approximate the framing of a 50mm lens on a full frame camera."

Night Photography
Mark Bowie recently led an awesome night photography workshop for NHCC. Mark does lead workshops. I went on one with him in Lake Placid and it was great, he is a wonderful teacher and his images are stunning, motivating and inspiring! Some of his workshops are thru the Adirondack Photography Institute

Come and photograph the majestic Grand Central terminal -- capture all of the details in the shadows and highlights with HDR photography! We have special permission to use tripods during this five hour workshop.
We also have a special treat -- a wonderful model for you! Linley will be joining us. http://www.modelmayhem.com/1380835. We envision her in that wonderful "spotlight" illuminated by the chandeliers downstairs, and we will also take her over to the usually empty area around Track 42.
We will meet at 1:30 at GCT and then you will be shooting for five hours.
Tom and I will be helping you out with compositions, checking exposures, etc. You will be taking 3-10 exposures in order to capture all of the details in the shadows and highlights.
We also offer separate optional pre- workshops to learn how to setup your camera to take HDR images and post-workshop workshops to demonstrate Photomatix, the most popular HDR processing software.
Come and photograph the majestic Grand Central terminal -- capture all of the details in the shadows and highlights with HDR photography! We have special permission to use tripods during this five hour workshop.
Tom and I will be helping you with compositions, checking exposures, etc. You will be taking 3-10 exposures in order to capture all of the details in the shadows and highlights. Meet outside the station master's office, there is an area to the left of the SMO. The SMO is the customer waiting area with the glass doors on the upper level of the terminal, at the top and just to the right of the escalators on the west side of the building (near tracks 34/35 and the Transit Museum store).

- Learn how to set up your camera to take HDR images. This workshop is designed to allow you to spend time before the shoot to set up your camera for HDR. You will learn how to take multiple exposures in order to capture all of the details in the highlights and shadows. Learn exposure compensation. If your camera has a creative mode (I know most canon cameras do, C1, C2, and possibly C3 on your dial) we can set you up for AEB (auto exposure bracketing) too
- Please bring your camera, camera manual, tripod, cable release if you have one (if you do not have one that is OK, your 2 second self self timer works well too!)
- Two sessions (in Hamden) to keep class size small.

We will instruct you how to sit and look your best by demonstrating. We will take a traditional full face pose and a 2/3 view pose and we will have you smile and be serious to provide few different of images for you to choose from. The images will be posted in an online gallery for your to view and select from.
We perform custom post-processing/editing on the chosen image (we edit blemishes, lint, soften the face a little, etc. ). Note that we only remove beauty marks, moles, freckles and such if requested, each person can let us know if they would prefer a little "glamour editing" at NO additional charge)
What to wear
We recommend simple a outfit, nothing too busy (avoid stripes, plaids, etc). Jewel tones (blues, greens, maroon, etc.) photograph very well. Avoid tank tops, sleeveless tops as bare arms overpower the face and can make us appear heavier than we are. Avoid white shirts as the brightness draws the viewers attention away from the face. This will be a head and shoulders photograph, not a full frame photograph, you could wear sweats or shorts on the bottom but sometimes it is beneficial to be fully dressed as it changes your affect and the way that you carry yourself. Your clothing should be appropriate for the type of portrait you desire, casual or formal. You can bring two outfits if you want two different looks. If you know for sure that you want two different looks you can register for yourself and a friend and pay for two; you can also purchase individual JPG files with shared rights later.

The Tops in Connecticut 2012 showing will occur on Saturday, April 27, 2013, beginning at 5 p.m. The show will be followed by dinner. These events will take place at the Hawthorne Inn on the Berlin Turnpike in
Berlin, CT.

Dinner and Showing of Tops in Connecticut 2012
Please join the Connecticut Association of Photographers on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The program
consists of all the photographs accepted in the 2012 Tops in Connecticut competition with commentaries.
This is the only time the program will be shown.
The dinner and program will be held at the Hawthorne Inn, 2421 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin, CT. Directions
can be found on the next page or at http://hawthorne-inn.com/directions.php. The TOPS in Connecticut program will begin at 5PM. Award presentations and a short business meeting will follow the program. There will be a cash bar for your enjoyment after the program. Dinner will be served at 6:45. Dinner choices for the evening are Chicken Hawthorne, Grilled Chicken Breast, Roasted Tomato and Artichoke Compote ($35); Grilled Salmon with Cucumber, Red Onion Salad, Soy Aioli ($35); and a 14 oz Roast Prime Rib of Beef topped with au jus and crispy onions ($40). The dinner prices are those set by the Hawthorne Inn. CAP will pay for the tax and tip for the dinners. Dinners include entrees, salad, sides of vegetable and starch, dessert, coffee and tea.

Directions to the Hawthorne Inn
From Hartford and Points North:
Follow 91 South to exit 22N toward New Britain. Then take another exit 22 (Rt. 15 South). Take a right at the end of the ramp, and at the next light, take another right. At the next light, take a left and bear right onto the Berlin Turnpike (Rt. 15 South). The Hawthorne Inn will be about 2 miles on the left hand side.
From Avon, Simsbury, & Farmington:
Route 4 (in Farmington South) to I-84 West. Follow to Route 72 exit, East toward New Britain. After several miles, Route 72 merges with Route 9. Stay in the right 2 lanes and follow signs for Route 9 South toward Middletown. Take the CT-372/MILL ST exit- exit number 22. Keep LEFT at the fork in the ramp. Merge onto CT-15/Berlin Turnpike South. Proceed 3 miles and you will see The Hawthorne Inn on your left. Make a U-turn at the following intersection and proceed to Hawthorne Inn.
From New Haven and Points South - Option 1:

Exquisite Waterscapes: The Art of Photographing Water
Water is one of the most photogenic subjects of the natural world, a quintessential compositional element. It opens views and doubles the landscape’s beauty through reflection. Mark will cover field strategies and state-of-the-art digital darkroom techniques for producing incredible images of lakes and ponds, rivers and other flowing waters, waterfalls and marine coasts. He will address scouting subjects, reading and shooting the light, photographing from the shore and from a boat. Mark Bowie is a professional nature photographer and writer. His work has been published internationally in books, on calendars and posters, and in advertising media. He has had three coffee table books published on the Adirondacks and is the author of two e-books on night photography: The Light of Midnight: Photographing the Landscape at Night and Night Examples. He is a staff instructor for the Adirondack Photography Institute, leading digital and landscape photography workshops throughout New York and New England.

You might want to put this out either on your blog or the NHCC blog. Very thorough explanation on how a major photo equipment rental company keeps their lenses clean. I use the lens pens but and also use ROR (Residual Oil Remover) with a PEC pad on my glass.

We have posted some images in the photo album from our last trip there.
"The Museum property was once part of John Holcombe's "Plantation", according to his will of 1742. In 1968, the Farmstead was donated to the Hunterdon County Historical Society In 1984, the property was deeded to the Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead, Inc. The Museum is housed in the restored three story bank barn that was built into the hillside to make both floors accessible from ground level. Livestock were kept on the lower level, crops above. Today, some of the exhibits arranged in the barn cover the tools and equipment used by the farmer to raise and harvest the crops that provided fodder for livestock and commodities to sell. Other displays cover the domestic chores of the farmer's wife in the preparation and preservation of food and the making of clothing. Early examples of now common implements and appliances give the visitor a sense of passing time. The Museum's volunteers and Trustees have restored the property and added outbuildings for the Post Office, General Store, Blacksmith Shop, Carriage Shed, and Print Shop."

The workshop will take you from simple water drops to different colored water collisions, allowing you to get many breathtaking images. No equipment is necessary, as we will provide it for you! All you need is a CF card to attend this workshop. Led by Susan Candelario, she will guide you to some of the equipment that you can use from the basic to more advanced with the ability for you to capture the many phases of water drops as well as water drop collisions. They will cover tips on setups and lighting and every participant will get many chances to go home with their own liquid works of art! Cost is $75 and no previous experience is necessary.
