Picture Pumpkins
We've all been there.
You've braved the pumpkin's innards and spent hours etching its Titian-hued flesh.
Then, the neighbor's cat dashes by the window (or was that a ghost?) and suddenly you've lopped the smirk right off of Jack O. Lantern's face.
It's time to defy the exacting standards of our annual October undertaking and replace them with a more photo-realistic (because we're using a real picture!) and totally classy (because we're framing it!) pumpkin.

"Noted landscape photographer and Outdoor Photographer contributor Lewis Kemper has been teaching Photoshop, Lightroom, and nature photography both online and at many noted venues, for years. He just released two new apps, or as these are called: DAPS, which stands for Digital Artist Presentations.
Lewis’s very popular online courses: The Photographers Toolbox for Lightroom have been very popular and is now available as a DAP: an online course for Smart Devices. He has also added: Light, Color, and Composition, a photography course for nature photographers also in the DAP format. Coming soon will be the Photographers Toolbox for Photoshop.
These are cloud based courses that can be watched anytime on a smartphone, computer, or digital tablet. The Photographers Toolbox for Lightroom includes 8.5 hours of video training on Lightroom 5 and covers how to Import and Export images, using the Library to improve your workflow, keywording, searching, rating and organizing your images.

My Kelby Training online class on photographing fall colors is just about done and should be up any day. But if you’re looking to go shoot early this week, I thought I’d give you 5 quick things to look for when you’re out there. Here goes:

We've been told time and time again that Photoshop is playing tricks on us, stretching, smoothing and buffing the models in magazines and ads to make them even more gorgeous (and less realistic).
But just how much can airbrushing really change? Just watch this mind-blowing video, "Body Evolution." The video, created in 2011 by GlobalDemocracy.com to demand mandatory disclaimers on all photos of airbrushed models, demonstrates just how much a computer is capable of changing a body.
While we can't be 100 percent certain the video, which surfaced again recently, is representative of what happens behind-the-scenes at every magazine today, it does make you wonder...
If models are getting the treatment seen in this video, it's no surprise lingerie model Erin Heatherton once said about her photos, "I feel like it looks like someone else. I guess it's not fair... You look better, but it's a lie."
New Firmware: 5D Mark III
Canon released an unexpected firmware today (last time they told us 4 months in advance, lol), and one of the things fixed is a biggie. THe firmware can be downloaded from here.

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF microadjustment value may change.*
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may show a line of false color along boundaries of high contrast.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the histogram of a LiveView image is incorrectly displayed when an HDMI cable is connected.
5. Enables the brightness of the camera's LCD monitor to be adjusted even when an HDMI cable is connected.
* The phenomenon listed in 2 was addressed with Firmware Version
1.2.1, and has been further improved with Firmware Version 1.2.3.

The Night Skye and Onsight invite you to Death Valley next March. Unlike our usual Full Moon Night Photography workshops, this one will take place in the waning stage of the lunar cycle which will offer us some moonlight, as well as dark skies for star point and Milky Way photography. This intensive workshop is intended for photographers with a good grasp of photographic principles and for those who are completely comfortable with their equipment. We’ll be pushing you to step outside your comfort zone, to test and find the limits of what your camera can do, and to make images that you can’t do at home. There will be great light painting opportunities, but if that’s not your thing, Death Valley is huge, and there are countless other options for Night Photography. Some experience or familiarity with Night Photography is recommended, as working in the desert without the aid of light from a full moon can be challenging.
This is an advanced class for those looking to expand your photographic horizons, recharge your creative batteries, share ideas with friends and colleagues, and to go home with some exciting images from this unique landscape. We’ll create individual goals for each participant, and encourage you to blur the lines between night and day, consider why you photograph at night, and to make images that are as far removed from postcard views as possible. Collaboration is a great way to make new discoveries and new friends, and will be a part of the experience. Working through image ideas and lighting together is a fun and rewarding process, and can help give you that kick in the pants you’ve been looking for. Locations may include the famous Racetrack Playa, Rhyolite, the Mesquite Sand Dunes, charcoal kilns, Badwater Salt Flats. Discoveries await.
The workshop base camp will be at Furnace Creek. We have secured a block of standard rooms at Furnace creek Ranch at a discounted rate, and once you make your deposit, you will receive a code that can be used to reserve one of the group rooms. If you wish to upgrade to a deluxe room, they are available on a first come, first served basis. The group reservation is for 5 nights, from March 18th to check out on March 23rd.
Plan to arrive on March 18th or sooner for the Night Photography workshop. Check out March 23rd or later. Death Valley is remote- very remote. It’s a 10 plus hour drive from the Bay Area, 5 hours from LA, and about a 2 hour drive from Las Vegas, which has the the closest airport. Shooting in remote locations means long drives both before and after shooting hours, so expect some late nights. One night in particular will require a 2.5 hour drive on a rough road that requires an AWD high clearance vehicle. We expect to carpool to this location and take a few vehicles as possible. There are Jeeps available for hire at Furnace Creek, and we will be contacting participants in advance to coordinate AWD vehicles. Jeep rental is not included in the cost of the workshop.

Photographers will learn how to be intentional in their photography and how to resonate with the viewer. The viewer should be drawn in and actually feel the story and emotion the photographer is attempting to convey. By learning to “see” the essence of a scene (the thing that drew them to photograph it) before pressing the shutter, photographers will create a better image. The goal of this “intentional photography” is to convey an emotion and not simply capture a nicely exposed flower or macro scene. Cinde will show inexpensive set-ups that attendees can use at home for flower and other types of macro photography. She will also demonstrate how, as a disabled photographer, she has learned simple set-ups, which she uses in her “kitchen studio”, that allow her to create emotional images - setups and methods that lend themselves to any photographer working at home. Cinde will also discuss how to take these skills and apply them in the field and to larger scenes, going beyond conventional photographic rules and encompassing true intent.

I have a very deep love for flower photography and other macro photography. My macro lenses almost never leave my camera and I can be found belly down in a garden or meadow or beach. Great subjects are everywhere and will reveal themselves if you are, not only seeing and looking, but also feeling. Seeing is a deliberate act.
