"One of the first things a photographer learns about image formats is that JPEG image compression is “lossy”, meaning that the smaller file produced by greater compression comes at the cost of lower image quality. How much lower — whether low enough to“matter” — depends on the situation. JPEG compression can be remarkably effective at reducing the size of the image, so despite the lowering costs of storage space and bandwidth, the reduced size is still very appealing: storing essentially the same image in one fifth the file size, for example, means uploading five times faster.

The Lightroom team is proud to introduce the fourth major version of the product designed for and by photographers. It was 6 years ago today when we introduced the very first public beta of Lightroom at MacWorld on January 9, 2006. (Yes, it was Mac only, smaller in footprint than most raw files and didn’t have a crop tool!) Since 2006 we’ve been hard at work improving an application that’s intended to be as easy to use as it is powerful. This release builds on the fundamental performance architecture and image quality improvements in Lightroom 3 to provide a truly complete workflow solution. I kept hearing from customers that they love Lightroom but needed to leave the Lightroom to complete X, Y or Z. Lightroom 4 tackles those issues with improvements to image organization, adjustment tools and comprehensive publishing options.

Lightroom 4 beta is not complete but please provide feedback on the available enhancements.
Lightroom 4 beta will not upgrade Lightroom 1.x, Lightroom 2.x or Lightroom 3.x catalogs. The beta is intended to be used for testing and feedback purposes. Lightroom 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4 beta libraries will be able to be migrated to the finished version of Lightroom 4.
While data loss is not expected, this is an early ‘beta’ quality build and you should always work on duplicates of files that are securely backed up.

Lightroom 4 beta Enhancements

Video Support
Lightroom 3 added the ability to import, manage and tag video files but as the popularity of video capture increases it’s important to provide a single, robust workflow solution that can support all of your imaging needs regardless if they’re still images or video captures. Lightroom 4 adds native playback for a wide variety of formats from mobile phones to high end DSLRs. Photographers can also apply common image adjustments to their video clips in real time. Map Module

It’s great that digital cameras automatically record a date/time stamp so that when it comes time find that image from New Years 2003, it’s easy to filter your image collection based on the information recorded by the camera. However, the “when” of an image is only half of the equation. What about the “where?” As an increasing number of cameras, smart phones leading the pack with compact cameras following closely behind, the “where” is also being recorded at the time of capture. Even Sony’s high-end a77 and a65 DSLR cameras have an option to automatically record the GPS coordinates of where you captured an image. But for those of us who don’t speak fluid latitude and longitude coordinates, we need a visual map interface to find the images by location. Lightroom 4 adds a dedicated map module that loads Google Maps to present your images in a clear and concise view. If your camera doesn’t automatically record the coordinates of your images you can easily drag and drop images to a location, use GPX tracklog files to link images based on date/time stamps or define saved locations that can be quickly associated with a set of images. (Not surprisingly, this link to Google Maps will only work when you are connected to the World Wide Web.) Additional Map details:

Develop Module (Updated 2012 Process Version)

Ever wonder why there was both an Exposure control and a Brightness control in Lightroom’s Develop module? Why the Black setting defaulted to 5 and Brightness/Contrast to 50 and 25 respectively? When the Camera Raw plug-in was introduced in 2003 these concepts weren’t overwhelming for those intrepid photographers willing to switch their camera’s capture format to “RAW.” (It’s not an acronym so I have no idea why folks continue to capitalize that word…) When Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in started supporting JPEG and TIFF files, the visual appearance of the settings and preset behavior was never truly optimized for the additional formats. Lightroom 4 rationalizes the controls and addresses a fundamental photographic problem of balancing highlight and shadow detail. Please give the new tone controls a try on your most challenging images as well as the additional controls listed below:

Adobe Lightroom in a Day

In this seminar, you will learn how to maximize your time in Lightroom by efficiently managing your photo archive, developing a consistent RAW processing workflow, and taking advantage of Lightroom's powerful printing engine.

In the morning session, Jerry will show how he uses Lightroom's Library module to easily track images and automate the process of entering keywords and other metadata. He will also simplify the process of editing RAW files using the Develop module.

In the afternoon session, Jerry will get more in-depth with the Develop module and explore the use of Lightroom plug-ins, including Nik HDR EFEX Pro and Helicon Focus. Wrapping up the seminar will be a discussion of how to use Lightroom's Print module to automate the print process, and how to use print profiles and Lightroom's sharpening algorithms to produce fine art prints.

Those of you familiar with my work know I consider the Great Smoky Mountains N.P to be "the" premier National Park in the eastern United States. Twenty plus years of exploring the park has culminated in two coffee table books featuring the Smokies, and more importantly the experience to guide you to the right locations during the best light. Everyone attending this workshop will receive a complimentary autographed copy of my book, "Great Smoky Mountains: Simply Beautiful."

We'll headquarter our workshop at the Hilton Garden Inn, Gatlinburg, just a few hundred feet from the park entrance. The Hilton Garden Inn is virtually brand new with meeting facilities and restaurants within walking distance. We have a meeting room reserved for critiques, reviewing new images, and lessons when the light is not suitable for great images.

CAP is sponsoring a Judging Symposium on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at the Milford Center for the Arts from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

The judging of the Connecticut InvitationalCompetition will also take place following the symposium at 2:30 p.m.

THE JUDGING SYMPOSIUM

Camera clubs depend on good judges to critique the work of their members. However, clubs are finding it harder to get good, qualified people who are willing to go out and serve as judges. Our hope is that bringing a number of interested people together to discuss the issue of camera club judging will be beneficial to all. Even less experienced photographers who are not ready to become judges will benefit from this symposium.

Paul Peterson will begin the morning with his program "Judging Photography In The Digital Age." After the program, we will break up into smaller groups and engage in free-flowing discussions in which the participants are invited to share their ideas for improving the quality and number of camera club judges in our area.

Some of the questions we hope to answer include:

* What should judges look for in judging a photograph?
* How do clubs recruit good judges?
* What makes a person qualified to be a judge?
* Is it more difficult to judge digital photography?
* What are the pet peeves that clubs have about judges and judging?
* Are there concerns that judges have about camera clubs?
* Can area clubs get an up-to-date list of camera club judges?

Any member of CAP may attend. You do not have to be a judge. There is no charge for the symposium. We hope to see you there to share ideas and learn what others are thinking.

In fact, they just can't handle wide angles so popular with landscape photography at all. But that's not a problem for Viewfinder. This is the only app in the App Store that supports wide angle adapters (we like and recommend the OWLE). Just tap the WIDE key, select the adapter that you're using, and go where no viewfinder app has gone before.

Here are some of the features that make Viewfinder the best app of its kind:
★ Support for generic camera formats in case your camera is not on the list.
★ Three user-defined custom lens focal lengths per camera in case your lens is not listed.
★ Support for up to five custom film/sensor formats for medium and large format cameras. You can work with the exact image size your camera produces!

Macro photography, defined loosely, is the photography of small things. In temperate zones, where habitats tend to be more open and blessed with nice morning and afternoon light, macro photographers often use tripods, small apertures, and natural light. This approach can produce wonderful images.

In tropical rainforests and cloud forests, however, light is at a premium, particularly in the deep forest where the interesting plants and creatures live. Costa Rica, where I live and work, originally was 99.5% forest. That number is a lot smaller these days but the areas outside of forest are cities, towns, agricultural fields, and cow pastures. To photograph the abundant macro subjects here, you have to get into the forest!

The lack of light means that the traditional temperate zone approach, even with the improved high ISO performance of modern DSLR camera bodies, can be applied only sparingly in the rainforest. The rainforest macro photographer needs to experiment with other techniques. The advantage is that this experimentation can open the door to creatively fresh images.

Any photographic portfolio is made more interesting by showcasing a diversity of image styles. In this little article, I offer fifteen ideas to help you deal with the challenges of rainforest macro photography while at the same time producing original, artistic images of the stunning biodiversity found in tropical rainforests.

Carbon atoms are able to link with each other and with other atoms to form infinite varietes of chains and rings. Carbon occurs in a pure state as diamond and graphite, and in an impure state as charcoal. A photographer, musician, and installation artist who originally trained to be a geologist, Charles Lindsay is fascinated by the aesthetics of scientific imaging and the great experiment that is life on earth. His work harnesses the organic, the sensory, and the mechanized to explore our perception of the universe and the evolution of symbols. At the heart of CARBON is a hybrid camera-less process Lindsay invented. This imaging technique fuses mark making with photography, utlizing a unique carbon based emulsion that he electrifies, freezes, and manipulates in many ways. The fantastically detailed negatives are scanned at high resolution, digitally processed, and then printed or animated. A similar analog to digital transformation occurs in his sound works, beginning with field recordings he gathers in remote environments and then processes. "My influences range from bizarre bio-forms and insect polyrhythms to fluorescent minerals and galactic super-structures. The bioluminescent comb jellyfish is a prime example. Making art is a way to explore pattern recognition and modes of perception and communication. What are the visceral and emotional responses to these stimuli? How does our mind grasp a new experience or process an unfamiliar shape that subconsciously elicits fear? I am intrigued by the idea that so much of our most trusted knowledge is based on images from beyond our normal scope of vision. With this in mind I am interested in our rapid evolutionary arc from early primates to astronauts and the increasing role devices play in 'seeing'. How will we evolve as as a species, will biology and artificial intelligence merge and what does life on earth suggest about what intelligent life might look or sound like elsewhere in the universe? Conceptually, I become most curious when ideas reach beyond the anthropocentric to suggest worlds with vastly different evolutionary paths from our own. The implication inherent to CARBON is the existence of species of consciousness other than our own." Imbued with the clarity of vision possessed by explorers throughout the ages, Charles Lindsay's CARBON project is a journey into mysterious and uncharted realms. He presents his art both as physical touchstones from psychological journeys and as catalysts to activate the viewer's senses, offering access to hidden dimensions which fill us with wonder and a curiosity for the unknown. Charles Lindsay** spent ten years covering environmental issues as a photojournalist in Southeast Asia before moving back to the U.S. Solo exhibitions of CARBON have previously appeared at the Dennos Museum in MIchigan, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Idaho, and Visions West Gallery in Montana. Lindsay's work was included in Lyle Rexer's book The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography (Aperture, 2009) and in the accompanying exhibition at the Aperture Foundation in New York City. His experimental music was most recently presented at New York University's Frederick Lowe theater as part of the Ear to the Earth Festival. Lindsay's work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the hewlett Packard Contemporary Art Collection Lindsay's photographs have appeared in numerous international publications including The New York Times Magazine, Blind Spot, Aperture, Men's Journal, Sports Illustrated, CPW's PQ, and others. Sync About It…or Thinking About Syncing

One of the most important concepts in flash photography is sync speed. This is the fastest shutter speed that your camera can use with normal flash. For most DSLRs, the sync speed is 1/250″. Your camera’s sync speed may be faster or slower — so check your user manual if you don’t know.

Why can’t I use flash at any shutter speed I want? This is a fair question. It has to do with the design of your camera’s shutter. If you use a DSLR or an old-school 35mm film camera, your shutter mechanism has two curtains in front of the sensor/film plane. During the exposure, the 1st/front curtain opens and then the 2nd/rear curtain closes. The difference in timing between the movement of the two curtains is your shutter speed.

At many shutter speeds, the 1st-curtain will completely clear the sensor before the 2nd-curtain begins to close. If your flash fires at any of these speeds, the entire sensor will see the flash — which is what you normally need to make a flash photo. Your sync speed is the fastest shutter speed at which the 1st-curtain completely clears the sensor before the 2nd-curtain begins to move.

At faster shutter speeds, the 2nd-curtain begins to close before the 1st-curtain is completely open. The shutter literally becomes a slit between the curtains that moves across the sensor. So, there is no point at which the flash can illuminate the entire sensor.

High-Speed Sync is a special flash mode that changes the way your Speedlite fires. Rather than fire one big pulse of light, HSS turns the Speedlite into a machine-gun of light that fires an insanely-fast series of pulses. Essentially the Speedlite becomes a continuous light source for a very brief period of time. The downside is that HSS consumes a ton of power. So, your Speedlite in HSS is 2.5 stops dimmer than it is in normal mode. There are loads of reasons to use HSS. Click here for the many articles I’ve written on HSS.

The Strike Finder isn't the only lightning trigger on the market (see: 1, 2, 3, 4), most of which seem to work on a similar principle. Lightning strikes are actually usually a cluster of strikes rather than a single big one, and the triggers detect the first sparks and hit the shutter in time to capture the rest of them. So in a way, it's related to a slaved strobe, reacting to changes in light by taking photos. There are other ways of doing it, the forthcoming Triggertrap should allow lightning capture simply by doing repeated long exposures until one is captured, though that's a decidedly less elegant method.

Boston Harbor Islands National Park is hosting a winter wildlife
cruise on Monday, January 16th, 2012 (MLKing day).

We will venture to the outer Harbor Islands, Hingham Bay and the Weir River estuary. The tour will be with guided rangers with the help of expert birders : Wayne Petersen, Bob Stymeist, and Tim Factor.
Cruise departs from both Quincy and Boston; Reservations are recommended. If you leave from Boston, you can reserve your tickets online, otherwise call Boston's Best Cruises at (617) 770-0040. Tickets cost $14 - $20 and include a complimentary beverage.

Past trips have recorded Snowy Owl, Harlequin Duck, Black Guillemot and Purple Sandpipers as well as all the regular waterfowl.

Today's Question: When saving a JPEG in Photoshop, at the bottom of the JPEG Options dialog there are three Format Options: Baseline (Standard), Baseline (Optimized) and Progressive. Under Progressive there is Scans, with the drop down numbers 3, 4, 5. I just noticed when saving a JPEG mine was on Progressive, and the drop down of 3. Should it be on that? I never really noticed it before....

Tim's Answer: I suppose I'd say my "short answer" to this question is that it really doesn't matter, and that you really don't need to worry about which option is set. That said, the setting you use does have an impact on the images you save in the JPEG file format, so it isn't a bad idea to understand what the options mean.

The Baseline (Standard) option is what I think of as the "normal" JPEG option. In this case, by "normal" I mean it is the JPEG format option that is most widely supported, and so it is option that has historically been supported by the widest range of software. So when in doubt, it is the safest option to choose for your JPEG images.

Of course, software has developed quite a bit over the years, and so the Baseline (Optimized) setting is now supported by the vast majority of software that supports JPEG images. In fact, in the last five years (perhaps ten years?) I've not heard from a single person who has run into a problem in terms of compatibility when it comes to JPEG images with the Baseline (Optimized) setting. And in most cases, the Baseline (Optimized) option will result in smaller file sizes compared to Baseline (Standard). Generally that reduction in file size is quite minimal, but it can be helpful for situations where you are especially concerned about file size.

The Progressive option is a variation on Baseline (Optimized). The file size will be the same as with Baseline (Optimized), but the image data is written in such a way as to have the image appear in several passes when it is opened. What that really means is that if you use a JPEG image with the Progressive option on a website, and the download speed is a little slow, the image will first appear a bit out of focus (because, for example, only every third line is displayed), then in slightly better focus, and then in normal focus. For users who have a broadband Internet connection, you might never even notice the Progressive setting was used for a particular JPEG. But it is helpful (or annoying, depending on your perspetive) for those opening images on a slow Internet connection.

I'm not a big fan of the effect you get with a Progressive JPEG image, so my preference is for Baseline (Optimized), largely because it generally reduces file size at least a little, without reducing image quality compared to the Baseline (Standard) option.

Lorenzo Fariello will teach you how to capture the stunning scenes of NYC at night. This workshop will cover night photography and low light conditions. He will tailor the teaching to each individual, assisting with camera settings, etc, to ensure your best possible night photography workshop experience.

This Night Photo session is best suited for those with a DSLR or other cameras (some point and shoot) that are capable of manipulating the shutter speed and aperture settings, to sustain the long exposures required for night photography. The timer function on your camera will also be used and those who have a tripod please bring it (for questions about your camera’s capabilities, please email Lorenzo).

You will learn various creative tricks for working in low light conditions and the artistry of painting with light. The workshop will be held at either Times Square or Union Square.

The judging of the Connecticut Invitational Competition will also take place following the symposium at 2:30 p.m.

THE JUDGING SYMPOSIUM

Camera clubs depend on good judges to critique the work of their members. However, clubs are finding it harder to get good, qualified people who are willing to go out and serve as judges. Our hope is that bringing a number of interested people together to discuss the issue of camera club judging will be beneficial to all. Even less experienced photographers who are not ready to become judges will benefit from this symposium.

Paul Peterson will begin the morning with his program "Judging Photography In The Digital Age." After the program, we will break up into smaller groups and engage in free-flowing discussions in which the participants are invited to share their ideas for improving the quality and number of camera club judges in our area.

Some of the questions we hope to answer include:

* What should judges look for in judging a photograph?
* How do clubs recruit good judges?
* What makes a person qualified to be a judge?
* Is it more difficult to judge digital photography?
* What are the pet peeves that clubs have about judges and judging?
* Are there concerns that judges have about camera clubs?
* Can area clubs get an up-to-date list of camera club judges?

Any member of CAP may attend. You do not have to be a judge. There is no charge for the symposium. We hope to see you there to share ideas and learn what others are thinking.

Question: Is there a way I can save Digital Darkroom Quarterly to Pages, iBooks, or Kindle on my iPad? Or any other app on my iPad?

Tim's Answer: This question is only tangentially related to digital imaging by virtue of my Digital Darkroom Quarterly publication being of interest to digital photographers, but since I have received quite a few inquiries about being able to view Digital Darkroom Quarterly on iPads and iPhones, I thought I would address the question here (plus it gives me yet another chance for a gratuitous plug of my publication).

You can indeed view Digital Darkroom Quarterly (or any other PDF document) on your iPad, and in fact I use this at events to show attendees what the publication looks like or to allow them to read a particular article they're interested in. The process is actually quite simple.

The first step is to add the PDF of Digital Darkroom Quarterly to your iTunes library. With iTunes up and running, simply drag the PDF from its location onto the Library area near the top-left corner of the iTunes interface. This will add the PDF document to your library, so it is available to sync to your devices.

Next, plug in your iPad (or iPhone) to the computer so it can be synchronized. Click on the iPad in the Devices list at the left side of iTunes, and then click Books in the navigation bar at the top-center of the iTunes interface. Make sure the Sync Books checkbox is turned on, and then either turn on All Books or choose Selected Books and turn on the checkbox for each document you would like to have available on your iPad. Then click the Sync button at the bottom-right of iTunes.

When the sync process is complete, launch the iBooks app on your iPad. To find the PDF, you can go to the Library, then click Collections and choose PDFs. A list of all PDF documents that have been synchronized will be listed, including any issues of Digital Darkroom Quarterly you've added.

If you've turned on the All Books option for synchronizing your iPad, with each new issue of Digital Darkroom Quarterly all you need to do is drag the PDF to the Library section of iTunes and click the Sync button, and the new issue will be ready for you to read in iBooks.

This in-depth course is offered on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 7:10 and the course is scheduled to run 14 sessions from January 24^th to May 1^st with one week off for spring break.

The town of Stockbridge, made famous by Norman Rockwell's painting of the village during the holidays, becomes a magical New England setting decorated with holiday wreaths and festive lights, as the town celebrates the 21st annual Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas, December 3rd and 4th.

Sponsored by the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce, the holiday celebration offers a full range of activities, with highlights including a holiday house tours, caroling, and a holiday concert. Capping off the weekend is a re-creation on Sunday of the scene depicted in Main Street at Christmas, complete with vintage automobiles parked in the spots occupied in the painting. The day's activities include horse drawn rides, a visit from Santa, Roger the Jester, lunch at the Christmas Food Booth and much more.

Photograph interiors without complex lighting equipment.

Create dramatic night shots.

Improve the contrast of black and white conversions.

Add drama and mystery to mundane scenes.

This workshop will demonstrate how to make a range of exposures to capture details in both highlights and shadows and then use software and your judgment to process them into a single image. Included: a review of the camera work needed and techniques necessary to do a series of images with a variety of exposures. Some questions answered: when and why do you want to use HDR, how do you deal with image capture and metering, will auto bracketing work or do you need manual, and how can I do HDR with a single image?

Once you have captured the images, what's the best way to process them to get the results you want? The HDR approach can be used conservatively to produce realistic images or aggressively to push images into the fantasy world. We will discuss the pros and cons of several of software options and compare results: Photoshop CS4, Photoshop CS5, Bracketeer, Photomatix, as well as some newer software.

Space is limited so there is a lot of one-on-one attention.

Location: Berkeley Heights.

Laptops are not necessary.

Claire Beckett's large-scale, color photographic series "Simulating Iraq" investigates the American military training sites where soldiers participate in role-playing exercises in preparation for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. In makeshift simulations of Middle Eastern villages, military personnel and hired civilians assume the various "parts"-from Iraqi villagers and medical workers to Taliban fighters-dressed in approximations of traditional clothing, including head scarves, tunics, and robes. Although the military activities are intended to familiarize troops with a foreign culture and unknown terrain, Beckett's "documentary" photographs present the viewer with a fascinating and false alternate reality--through a straightforward but problematic account of cultural simulation charged with genuine humanity.

The following was copied/pasted from the first few paragraphs of Scott Kelby's Blog.. read the entire letter here (I urge you to read it as the impact is BIG) Lisa

Dear Adobe:

As president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) I represent more than 70,000 Photoshop users around the world. However as I’m writing this open letter to you today, I would say that most of our 70,000 members have no idea about the upgrade policy changes you just announced, or about how these changes will affect them.

From the information I’ve gathered, it appears to me that this new upgrade policy for the next version of Adobe Photoshop and the Creative Suite (presumably called CS6) will leave a significant number of your customers with no affordable upgrade path to Photoshop CS6 or the Creative Suite.
It’s my understanding that when the next version of Photoshop and the Creative Suite is released, if you do not already own Photoshop version CS5 or CS5.5 (or the 5 or 5.5 Creative Suite):

(a) You will not be eligible to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 (or the CS6 Creative Suite). Instead the only way to get Photoshop CS6 at that point will be to repurchase the entire product again at its full price (presumably $699 US). If you’re a CS4 Creative Suite User, you’ll have to buy the entire suite all over again to move to CS6.

(b) For Photoshop CS4, or CS3 users, their only real option is to pay to upgrade now to CS5.5 (though you are offering a 20% upgrade discount upgrade until the end of the year), and then to pay again to upgrade when Photoshop CS6 is released, or sign up for your new monthly subscription plan.

While I understand that Adobe needs to make business decisions based on how it sees market conditions, I feel the timing of this new pricing structure is patently unfair to your customers (and our members). Here’s why: You didn’t tell us up front. You didn’t tell us until nearly the end of the product’s life cycle, and now you’re making us buy CS5.5 for just a few months on the chance that we might want to buy CS6 at a discount when it’s released. Otherwise, we have to pay the full price as if we were never Adobe customers at all.

Those users who didn’t upgrade to CS5 or 5.5, either couldn’t afford the upgrade, or couldn’t justify the upgrade, or they would already be on CS5 or 5.5. But now you’re kind of holding us hostage—–you’re making us buy something we don’t need now, just so we will still have the option to get something that we may want (CS6) when it is released without buying it all over again from scratch. You’re playing hardball with your customers—either upgrade twice or you’re out. That’s not the Adobe we know.

I have always felt that Adobe was very customer centric, and that their decisions were based on what’s best for their customers, but in this particular instance I can’t see how cutting off CS4 and CS3 users, and making them either pay two upgrades in a row, or pay the full retail price to get CS6, benefits anybody but Adobe.

With that said, here’s my plea to Adobe:

Matt's blog shows a way to automatically get rid of your camera info.

When you go to File > Export and the Export dialog opens, you’ll see a small checkbox called “Minimize Embedded Metadata”. Turn that on and Lightroom will keep any copyright information in the metadata but it’ll remove all of the camera-related stuff.

As one of America’s most popular destinations and world renowned through the artwork of photographer Ansel Adams, Yosemite National Park offers some of the most spectacular landscape photography opportunities anywhere in the world. Join Lerro Productions as we travel throughout Yosemite Valley and photograph such places as El Capitan, Half Dome and many other famous landmarks.

During the workshop, participants will learn how to photograph these scenes under a number of different lighting situations, including sunrise and sunset, back lighting and nighttime photography. While most of our time will be spent out in the field shooting, there will be time dedicated to photo critiques as well as post processing techniques.

Lodging, meals and transportation are not included in the workshop fee.

Lodging:

There are three options for lodging during the event. The nightly average rate of the hotels in Yosemite Valley is $140.00. A cheaper hotel option would be to stay in the town of Mariposa, CA, which is about an hour outside of the valley. There are a number of chain hotels there that average $70.00 a night.
The least expensive lodging option is to camp inside the valley. While it may seem challenging, you'll get the full experience of Yosemite Valley. Campsites average only $20.00 a night.

Transportation:

Because of winter weather road conditions, Yosemite National Park can sometimes only allow 4WD vehicles in. It may turn out that the weather will be pleasant during our trip, but as a precaution, it’s very important that all participants rent a 4WD vehicle just in case. I'd hate to see someone stuck outside at the gate because weather conditions will not allow for a 2WD vehicle. Sometimes tire chains are also required to be kept in the trunk as a precaution. If needed, you can rent or buy chains in the town of Mariposa, CA.

Food and Meals:

There is a general store as well as several restaurants in Yosemite Valley. Are schedule will vary day to day so don't hesitate to keep a snack with you between meals.

The idea is that photo ideas can always be broken down into four components: location, subject, feeling, and technique. Provide the app with these four things, and it will store your idea for you to come back to later on. If you need some inspiration, hitting the “randomize” button will fill in the fields for you — kinda like a photographic mad libs.
