Tim Grey "Photoshop Why and How" Workshop at Light Photographic Workshops

"Photoshop Why and How" Workshop at Light Photographic Workshops

I'm pleased to announce I will be teaching a workshop entitled "Photoshop Why and How" at Light Photographic Workshops in California, March 22-26, 2010. Even better, if you register today (by close of business on Friday, January 22, 2010) you'll receive special "early bird" pricing.

In this workshop I'll help you better understand your images, gain insight into the motivation for a given image and the vision for that image, and then show you how to produce the very best results in Photoshop. In short, if you tend to focus on "how" to apply particular adjustments instead of thinking about the "why" for those adjustments, or if you have ever opened an image and didn't know where to begin, this is the workshop for you.

This workshop will include discussion of a wide variety of issues related to producing the best results for a photographic image, critique of your images in a group environment to help you better understand what is possible and how to best approach a variety of photographic situations, and a hands-on learning experience that will help ensure you leave feeling like a master of Photoshop and the workflow necessary to produce incredible results.
This will be an incredible workshop experience, and I look forward to sharing the experience with you in order to help you realize your photographic vision.

Andrew Zuckerman's "Bird"

This is GREAT! Wow! I wish that I could have been there for that project! You have to watch these! Lisa

Turning his camera to the world of birds, Andrew Zuckerman has a created a new body of work revealing the vivid colors, textures, and personalities of each subject in extraordinary detail.

There is also a book Bird by Andrew. I just ordered it.

Now as a photographer I just had to look and see HOW he did this. It was obvious from the three catchlights in the eyes (and the white background) that this was some a studio setup ---- but where and how?

The company was founded in 1933 with the name Seiki Kōgaku Kenkyūjo (or Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory) by the co-founder Yoshida Gorō and his brother-in-law Uchida Saburō, funded by Mitarai Takeshi, a close friend of Uchida. Its original purpose was to research into the development of quality cameras. In June 1934 they released their first camera, the Kwanon (pronounced kannon), named after the Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy of the same name. The following year the camera's name was changed to the less overtly religious Canon (pronounced kyanon). The company changed its name to Canon Camera in 1947, and to Canon in 1969.

The company was founded in 1917 as Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō K.K. with the merger of two Japanese optical firms with military connections. The company's first camera lenses were designed in the 1920s by Heinrich Acht, who was invited with a team of German engineers. After the departure of Acht, the lens design department was taken over by Sunayama Kakuya. The first lens mounted on a camera for civil use was the Anytar 12cm f/4.5 made in the early 1930s, renamed Nikkor in 1932.

The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies

The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies
Tuesday, January 26 at 8 pm ET/PT on NOVA
Check your local listings as dates and times may vary.

Orange-and-black wings fill the sky as NOVA charts one of nature's most remarkable phenomena: the epic migration of monarch butterflies across North America. NOVA's filmmakers followed monarchs on the wing throughout their extraordinary odyssey. To capture a butterfly's point of view, camera operators used a helicopter, ultralight, and hot-air balloon for aerial views along the butterflies' transcontinental route. "The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies" director Nick de Pencier describes his attempts to fly like a butterfly and other adventures making the film.

Governor's Footguard Dog Show Feb 21 http://www.governorsfootguard.com/dogshow/

Feb, 21, 2010 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
XL Center Exhibition Hall 1 Civic Center Plaza Hartford, CT 06106

An AKC sanctioned all breed, obedience and junior dog show. Public is invited to watch the competition and meet the dog owners and handlers.

ADMISSION: Adults $8

About the Foot Guard Dog Show... Since the 1920’s, the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Athletic Association has sponsored, with a small number of exceptions, an annual AKC sanctioned dog show. The current format of the show is All Breed, Obedience and Junior Showmanship (AB/O/JSHW). Dogs entered in our show compete for championship points. We generally have around 1200 dogs entered in our show representing all seven groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding) and representing about 140 different breeds. These entrants come from all over the United States and Canada. Our show is held, generally, on the third Sunday in February of the year. We partner with the Elm City Kennel Club, who holds their show the day prior to ours and we use the same venue. For the past several years, that venue has been the XL Center in Hartford, CT. The Hartford Obedience Training Club runs the obedience trials at our show. Our dog show superintendent is MB-F, Inc. of Greensboro, NC, one of the premier dog show producers and managers in the United States. Some of the proceeds of our dog show are used to fund two scholarships that are given to pre-veterinary students at the University of Connecticut; one attending the School of Agriculture and one attending the School of Natural Resources. In addition to our AKC sanctioned show, we also hold a match dog show sometime in late September or early October. This is an informal or ‘practice’ show so no championship points are awarded. Instead, it is an opportunity for dogs and handlers to learn how to show. Our match show is held and the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard reservation in Avon, CT. Questions or comments? How to Prepare

Class Size: Limited to 12

Limited class size and selective enrollment ensures that topics covered may be adjusted for the needs of the group and participants receive individual attention.

Workshop Overview
Breathtaking is the word for the destinations visited during this week. This is a tour of jewels along the dramatic Maine seacoast while it is flooded with autumnal color. We'll visit Acadia National Park, Pemaquid Point, the Union lakes region, and many tucked away treasures along the the St. George River Valley (including some spots only the locals know about). Harvest season finds the air exhilaratingly crisp setting forest canopies and blueberry fields afire with stunning reds, oranges, and yellows. My private studio will be our home base where demonstrations will take place and from which we will make daily excursions. Reviews of participant's work during the week are conducted in studio, in transit, and on location. Get ready for a non-stop week of making images.

Participants may wish to take extra time on the weekends before or after the workshop to visit nearby islands (Monhegan, Vinalhaven, or Isleboro) or continue on to the White Mountains in Vermont.

"I expected pretty much just a tour with guidence available, and was blown away by how much it was about creativity from the inside out, rather than the typical workshop. It was really about us and our process of seeing, looking and creating against a backdrop of fall colors. The exercises were well thought out and built on each other ... this is a workshop that is really head and shoulders above all the other I've been to. "
- Susan Beveridge, Fall Foliage - October, 2008

Content
Digital imaging has been revolutionizing photography and liberating photographers for over a decade. Today the possibilities for photographic image-making appear limitless. The new potentials of digital imaging aren't unlocked in the lab alone. Once you fully understand the possibilities and begin to integrate them into your practice, you will start making photographs in new ways, hopefully even ways all your own.

That's what this week is for. After new working methods and perceptual patterns have been suggested, participants will be encouraged to make new images employing both historical and contemporary methods, searching for an optimal balance tailored for each inpidual. You’ll find a balance that’s best for you. For some this week will be an introduction to the possibilities, for others it will be about tying them all together. It will be a complete immersion for everyone. The most important thing to bring is an open mind.

Freeman Patterson offers excellent advice. List all of the rules of photography. And break them. If you do this, you’ll develop a better understanding of the medium. I recommend you take this advice one step further. List all of your rules of photography. And break them. You’ll either find confirmation that what you’re doing is right for you or you’ll make new breakthroughs.
Daily readings, discussions, demonstrations, and assignments will guide inpidual explorations. Once an optimal image adjustment strategy (including converting images with Camera Raw and sharpening) has been outlined and detailed, I'll demonstrate and you'll learn techniques such as how to expand format, extend depth of field, increase dynamic range, paint with light, use creative focus effects, convert color to black-and-white, and much more.

Participants need a digital camera, portable computer, and Adobe Photoshop. Manufacturer loans may be available. Photographic skills, an open mind, and curiosity are the primary requirements for this week. Students will be required to have only a general understanding of digital imaging, though some experience with Photoshop is recommended. The more you bring to the week, the more you'll take back.

This workshop is right for you if
You want to explore the full potential of photography and your personal vision while making photographs at inspiring locations, receiving feedback on your images as you make them.

Workshop requirements
A basic comfort level with Photoshop is required for all of John Paul's sessions.

Raising a stink over printer ink

Raising a stink over printer ink
an article in the LA Times...By Steve Everly

"Officials who regulate weights and measures for states are preparing for a showdown with manufacturers over how ink cartridges are labeled."

"Most printer manufacturers, except Kodak, sell the printers at low cost and then earn big profits on the cartridges. The American Consumer Institute in a study in late 2008 said that consumers were being lured into a bad deal by buying the lower-cost printers and then overpaying an estimated $6 billion per year for the cartridges."

Les Campbell's matting course

Lisa -

Just received this email from Elaine, Les Campbell's assistant, about a new round of print matting and framing classes coming up at Les's home at Sky Meadow. While Les normally does this over 3 Saturday mornings but in the past, he has done it for folks from Connecticut over 1 Saturday morning and the next Saturday morning and part of the afternoon, to cut down on the driving to and from Connecticut. If you want to learn how to mount, mat, and frame your prints, this is an excellent way and place to learn. Besides the class fee, there are charges for the materials used but Les marks these items up only 10% over his costs to keep the total costs down.

Since Les does not have internet access, Elaine requests that folks interested in taking the course email her at her address: darrmorton@charter.net .

Gary

Les and I will be offering Saturday workshops for $30 beginning February 6, 2010. If interested please email me - we can only take four people at a time. Will extend into March if there is demand. Let me know. Elaine

How to avoid lens flare

A very different approach by Ron Niebrugge

How to avoid lens flare

"When photographing directly into the sun, especially with zoom lenses, it seems like lens flare is almost impossible to avoid. I thought I would share a little trick that I have used for the last few years for eliminating flare. I capture two images, one that includes the sun and flare, and one where I block the sun and eliminate the flare as you can see above. I then combine the two images using photomerge in Photoshop keeping most of the image on the right except for the portion of the image where you see my fingers."

CA State Park photography permits

This was posted on NPN by David Cobb

Just spoke with Helene Dervishian, the CA State Parks photography permit coordinator. You must now have a permit to photograph in the CA State Parks if it looks like you're a professional (i.e. nice camera or setting up shots that take time) according to her. Permits vary by county, park, and visit. For a simple still photography permit they are free, but the state review fee is $65 for each (possibly good for up to 6 months) a longer time period costs up to $200. You cannot get a blanket one year CA State Park permit. You must have photography insurance to finish the application. I have all the guidelines and contact information and can email them to you if you're interested. It sounds like photographing in CA state parks is becoming a bureaucratic nightmare. Without a permit, citations will be issued.

More information can be found here: http://www.film.ca.gov/ContactUs/index.html here: http://www.largeformatphotography.info/photo-permits/ and here: http://www.film.ca.gov/Permits/index.html

Helene Dervishian specifically stated still photography with a SLR camera, and that permit review is $65 (permit is free). I know people who were warned that they would be cited if they didn't stop taking photographs. Some places are more agressive than others I guess.

Hummingbirds: Magic in the AirVideo: Full Episode

Hummingbirds are the tiniest of birds, yet they are some of the toughest, most energetic creatures on the planet. Their unique flying abilities give them unmatched maneuverability, but at the cost of a supercharged metabolism that keeps them on the edge of survival. Hummingbirds spend most their lives in fast forward, but now high-speed video lets us enter their world.

Mark Picard Wildlife Photography

Mark Picard Wildlife Photography

I just know if I am not organized things will fall off my radar. So, I start by making sure all submission deadlines, speaking engagements and workshop dates are filled in on my calendar. Of course, I call my tax man to schedule my tax preparation but then I do something I bet few of you do.

Using my camera's image metadata from the previous year I fill in probable dates for photo opportunities in my area. I find this information really useful. If there was a week that I photographed Horned Larks and Snow Buntings in the flood plains of the CT River I want to remember to check out those same fields this year. The same goes for my Winter trips to Salisbury Beach north of Boston for Snowy Owls, Merlin and Crossbills.

Peak wildflower blooms for Bloodroot, Trillium, Columbine, all the Spring ephemerals, are dates I do not want to miss. Heck, I can tell you within a day or two when Black Squirrels will show up in my yard, for about a month, leaving it the rest of the year to just the Grays. You get the idea. Knowing the most likely place and time to capture a particular subject is a big part of wildlife photography.

I think that is why people who have taken my workshops come back again and again. They know my workshops are planned for the best opportunities to capture stellar wildlife images. Now in their 6th year, these workshops offer an unparalleled opportunity to photograph the Katahdin Region of Maine including its spectacular landscapes and magnificent Moose. As a result of the big move, I will be offering expanded workshop opportunities. Still focused on the most dynamic times of year, both my Spring and Fall group workshops will allow participants more flexibility in choosing a time that best matches their schedule.

June (Spring in the North Woods of Maine) and now July provide opportunities to photograph a world coming to life after a long Winter. Moose feed heavily in the ponds this time of year, often times along side their cinnamon colored calves. Bull Moose antlers are covered in velvet and can grow as much as an inch a day. Picturesque indigenous wildflowers, rushing waterways, boreal birds and other fauna also provide inspiration and opportunities to learn new skills.

September and October workshops coincide with the Moose Rut and spectacular Fall color that the Region is noted for. Now those 35 pound calves from Spring have grown a bit weighing about 400 pounds. The massive Bull's antlers are finished growing, the velvet having been shed for the mating season. This is the time to capture these magnificent creatures in courtship and mating behavior with a backdrop of Fall color.

YOU ARE INVITED to attend my upcoming presentations of
"The Challenges of Wildlife Photography"
a digital slide presentation featuring New England flora and fauna. All events are free and the public is invited.
